I could hear my own breathing, the faint electrical hum of the emergency system, and the scrape of my father's shoes as he shifted closer to me.

The general raised his weapon toward the ceiling.

“Identify yourself.”

A quiet laugh answered him.

“You already know.”

The general's face hardened.

My father whispered, me.

“Yes.”

The emergency lights flickered once, casting the room in a dim red glow.

My father finally said the name.

“General Elias Voss.”

The name meant nothing to me until I looked at the screen.

The partially restored hospital record still displayed the same surname.

Voss.

My biological father's name.

The man who had trained my father.

The man who had apparently stood close to my parents before I was born.

And now the voice of the person controlling the building's intercom.

I stared at my father.

“You said you didn't know who my biological father was.”

“I said I didn't know whether he closed.

“Yes.”

The general stepped between us.

“We can deal with that later.”

“No,” I said. “We've been saying later for twenty-six years.”

My father looked at me.

He knew I was right.

The intercom crackled.

“Your father always did have trouble telling the truth when the on.

The door remained closed.

Then every monitor in the room activated simultaneously.

The screens displayed the same image.

A photograph of my mother.

She was standing outside the hospital where I had been born.

Beside her stood a younger Elias Voss.

My mother was pregnant.

My father was not in the photograph.

I stared at it.

The general whispered, “Where did he get that?”

My father didn't answer.

I looked at him.

“Were you there?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because Voss sent me somewhere else.”

The photograph changed.

A second image appeared.

My mother holding me.

My father standing beside her.

Voss was behind them.

The date was the day I was born.

Then the screen changed again.

A document appeared.

My mother's handwriting had been reproduced beneath a typed statement.

The statement said that Voss had been designated as a biological father for a child born under a protected identity.

My father's face went pale.

“That isn't her signature.”

The general examined the screen.

“No.”

My mother had never signed that document.

Someone had forged it.

The intercom crackled again.

“You see how easy it was?”

I stepped closer to the screen.

“What do you want?”

Silence.

Then Voss answered.

“I want what your mother what?”

His voice softened.

“I want the original birth record.”

My father stared at me.

“The box.”

I understood.

My mother hadn't hidden the truth in the photograph.

She had hidden a map to the truth.

The hospital archive contained the original record.

The box contained whatever came after.

The microfilm showed the trail.

And the birth record proved who I was.

Voss wanted it destroyed.

The general turned toward the security officer.

“Can you isolate the intercom?”

The officer shook his head.

“He has control of the internal network.”

“Can you shut down the completely.”

We moved through the archive corridor.

The emergency lights remained on, but the building had become strangely quiet.

No footsteps.

No alarms.

No voices.

That silence frightened me more than the gunshot.

We reached a service elevator.

My father entered an old access code.

The doors opened.

Inside, he pressed a button marked B2.

The general stared at him.

“You remember the code?”

“I remember everything.”

The elevator descended.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at my father.

“Tell me about Voss.”

He stared at the floor.

“He recruited me when I was general interrupted.

“And because he had leverage.”

My father nodded.

“What leverage?”

“He had evidence that my own superiors were involved.”

“So if you exposed him, you would expose yourself.”

“Yes.”

The elevator stopped.

The doors opened onto a dark concrete corridor.

My father stepped out first.

I followed.

The old maternity wing smelled of damp plaster and disinfectant.

Most of the lights were dead.

At the far end stood a metal door.

My father approached it.

“This is where your mother brought me after she discovered the records had been altered.”

“What happened?”

“She showed me the original.”

“The original what?”

“Your birth certificate.”

He looked at me.

“And the name on it wasn't mine.”

I felt my chest tighten.

“Was it Voss?”

“No.”

I stopped.

My father turned.

“Then whose?”

He didn't answer immediately.

The general looked at him.

“You need to tell her.”

My father nodded.

“The name was Daniel Mercer.”

The name meant nothing.

“Who was Daniel Mercer?”

My father looked toward the door.

“The man who died before you were born.”

My stomach dropped.

“What?”

“He was officially killed overseas.”

“Officially?”

“Yes.”

“Was he actually alive?”

“We don't know.”

The general said, “Mercer was an intelligence officer.”

My father continued.

“He and Voss worked together.”

I looked at him.

“So Mercer could be my father.”

“Yes.”

“But Voss wanted me to believe he was.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Mercer had something Voss wanted.”

“What?”

My father reached for the door.

“Your mother knew.”

The door opened.

Inside was a small room containing old medical cabinets.

My father walked to the back wall.

He pressed a loose tile.

Nothing happened.

He pressed another.

A section of the wall clicked.

A narrow compartment opened.

Inside was a metal box.

I recognized the key.

My hand went cold.

My father looked at me.

“Your mother told me you would find it.”

I inserted the key.

The lock turned.

The lid opened.

Inside was a stack of papers, a small cassette recorder, several photographs, and one sealed envelope.

My name was written on it.

Not my childhood name.

My current name.

The name I had used professionally for years.

I stared at my father.

“She knew.”

“Yes.”

“She knew I would become an officer.”

“No.”

“Then how did she know my name?”

My father picked up the envelope.

“She didn't.”

He turned it over.

There was a second handwriting beneath mine.

A man's.

The same hand appeared on the forged birth document.

The general looked at it.

“Voss.”

My father nodded.

I looked toward the ceiling.

“Then he knew about this box.”

“Yes.”

“Why hasn't he taken it?”

My father looked at the open compartment.

“Because he couldn't find it.”

The intercom suddenly came alive.

“You're wrong.”

The voice was no longer calm.

Voss sounded angry.

“You were never supposed to reach that room.”

My father looked at me.

“Take the box.”

I did.

The general drew his weapon.

“Move.”

We turned toward the corridor.

A red light appeared at the far end.

Then another.

Security doors began closing one after another.

We were being sealed in.

My father grabbed the box.

“There's another exit.”

“Where?”

“Through the old operating theater.”

We ran.

Behind us, metal doors slammed shut.

The general fired at the control panel.

The lights went dark.

We reached the theater.

My father pushed open the rear door.

A narrow stairway led upward.

At the bottom of the stairs, he stopped.

I almost collided with him.

“What?”

He pointed.

Someone had left a photograph on the floor.

My mother.

Holding me.

On the back were five words.

Your father is not who you think.

I looked at my father.

He shook his head.

“I don't know what she meant.”

I opened the box again.

The sealed envelope was still there.

This time, I tore it open.

Inside was a single sentence.

The man who raised you is your father. The man who made you is not.

I looked up.

My father was staring at me.

And for the first time, I understood that the question of biology had never been the real secret.

The real secret was why Voss had spent twenty-six years pretending he was my father.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: The Box Explained Why Voss Wanted My Birth Record, but My Mother Had Left One Final Test to Prove Who Was Telling the Truth

The voice came through the emergency intercom again. “You were never supposed to see that name.” For several seconds, nobody moved.
