him.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because if Harlan is watching, he'll know we found the connection.”

Andrew understood.

“Then what do we do?”

“We find the second recording.”

Claire stepped forward.

“You said there was another rode in another vehicle with Whitmore.

I drove.

Halfway there, Claire called.

“Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“I need to ask you something.”

“Go ahead.”

“Were you angry with me?”

I kept my eyes on the road.

“For what?”

“For not away?”

“Because I thought staying away kept you safe.”

She wiped her eyes.

“I would rather have known.”

“So would I.”

We reached the old house shortly after dawn.

The property looked abandoned.

Grass covered the driveway.

The windows were boarded.

My father unlocked the front door.

Inside, dust covered everything.

Claire walked slowly through the hallway.

“I remember this place.”

I looked at her.

“You were here often?”

“Yes.”

She stopped at a small wooden cabinet.

“My father used to keep important things here.”

She opened it.

Nothing.

Then she noticed a loose panel.

She removed it.

Behind it was a narrow compartment.

Inside was a metal case.

I opened it.

There was the second recording.

And a letter.

The letter was addressed to me.

I unfolded it.

My father's handwriting filled the page.

*Daniel, if you found this, then I failed to keep you away from the truth.**

I read the next line.

*The man you were hunting was never Harlan.**

I stopped.

Whitmore took the letter.

She read silently.

Then looked at me.

“There is more.”

I continued.

*Harlan was corrupt, but he was not Viper.**

The next sentence was underlined.

*Viper was someone inside our family.**

Claire whispered:

“No.”

I looked at her.

She looked terrified.

My father had already begun shaking his head.

“No.”

I unfolded the final section.

The handwriting became uneven.

*You will want to blame Claire.
