whispered, “You really changed.”

“No,” I said. “You finally see me clearly.”

I ended the call.

The next morning, Agent Walsh sent a secure account.

Another portion had gone to an investment account controlled by my mother.

The rest remained in the company account.

I forwarded the information to Morrison.

Then I received something unexpected.

A message from my father.

I know you know.

I stared at the screen.

Another message followed.

I never intended to put you in danger.

I typed a response.

Then deleted it.

Another message arrived.

Your mother didn't know about the can.

I wrote:

You have already made that choice.

No answer followed.

Two days later, federal investigators executed a search warrant at my parents' house.

They seized computers, transaction records, phones, and financial documents.

Dad was questioned again.

Mom was interviewed separately.

Richard retained criminal counsel.

Natalie stopped calling.

The story became larger than our family.

It was no longer simply about a property sale.

It concerned financial misrepresentation, unauthorized transfer of protected property, and the disclosure of security-related information.

And buried inside the investigation was one fact that frightened me more than anything else.

My father had known about the federal designation before the sale.

He had known the buyer wanted access information.

And he had decided that neither fact was important enough to stop the transaction.

Three weeks later, Agent Walsh called me.

“The investigation is nearly complete.”

I sat behind my desk in Vienna.

“What happens next?”

“Charges are being considered.”

“Against all three?”

“Potentially.”

“Mom?”

“We're still evaluating her involvement.”

“And Richard?”

“He has provided information.”

I frowned.

“What kind?”

“Enough to establish the money trail.”

“Does he claim my father knew?”

“Yes.”

My stomach tightened.

“Does he have evidence?”

“He provided communications.”

I leaned back.

“Then Dad is going to be charged.”

“I didn't say that.”

“You didn't need to.”

There was a pause.

“Alexis, there's something else.”

I waited.

“Your mother contacted us privately.”

“What did she say?”

“She claims she warned your father not to proceed.”

I stared at the wall.

“Did she?”

“We're verifying that.”

“Do you believe her?”

“That isn't my role.”

I appreciated the answer.

“What did she say exactly?”

“She said she discovered the federal designation two days before closing.”

My throat tightened.

“Two days?”

“Yes.”

“And she didn't tell me?”

“She claims your father told her you already knew.”

I closed my eyes.

That was almost worse.

My mother may have known.

My father may have known.

And both had chosen silence.

Agent Walsh continued.

“She also says your father told her the buyer would withdraw if the federal restriction became an issue.”

I said nothing.

“So they knowingly pushed the transaction through.”

“We're still establishing the legal interpretation.”

“But factually?”

“Factually, we have communications suggesting they knew the property was restricted before closing.”

I looked at the clock.

“Thank you.”

“I'll keep you informed.”

The call ended.

I remained in my chair.

Outside my window, Vienna moved through another ordinary afternoon.

People walked along the street.

Cars passed.

A delivery truck stopped at the corner.

The world looked normal.

My family was not.

That evening, I received a final message from Dad.

Please come home.

I stared at it.

Then another appeared.

I want to explain everything before they charge me.

I considered the request.

For years, I had wanted my parents to ask about my life.

Now my father was finally asking me to listen.

But he wasn't asking because he wanted to understand me.

He wanted me to understand him.

I put the phone down.

Then I picked it up again.

I typed one sentence.

Tell the investigators first.

His response came almost immediately.

What if I tell them everything and lose my family?

I looked at the message for a long time.

Then I answered.

You already lost their trust when you decided the truth was worth less than the money.

I sent it.

For the first time since the investigation began, I felt no urge to explain myself.

No urge to defend my career.

No urge to prove that I had been telling the truth for four years.

The evidence was doing that for me.

And somewhere in Washington, my father was finally facing the one consequence he had never imagined.

He could no longer control the story.

<a
