pulled a small envelope from her purse.

Inside was a photograph.

It was from the day I bought the house.

I stood on the porch holding the closing folder.

My hair was messy from the wind.

I was smiling.

Not the polite smile I had learned during years of marriage.

A real one.

I looked at the photograph for a long time.

“I forgot about this.”

“I didn't.”

She pointed to the corner.

“Look.”

Rachel had taken the photograph.

Behind me was the maple tree.

Barely visible.

The house looked empty.

But I looked happy.

Emily said, “That was the first time I remember seeing you look like that.”

“Like what?”

“Like you were already free.”

I swallowed.

I hadn't known it then.

Maybe freedom did not always arrive as a dramatic event.

Maybe sometimes it looked like signing your name on a deed.

Buying a set of dishes.

Changing a password.

Saying no.

Calling the police.

Or letting someone leave without chasing after them.

That evening, I framed the photograph.

I placed it beside the Thanksgiving picture.

Two versions of the same life.

The first showed me standing alone outside an empty house.

The second showed everyone gathered around my table.

The distance between them was only months.

But it felt like years.

Spring arrived.

The maple tree began growing new leaves.

The house became warmer.

I planted herbs in the backyard.

Emily helped me build a raised garden bed.

Rachel complained that I had chosen the wrong kind of soil.

I ignored her.

For the first time, I was making plans that had nothing to do with Mark.

Then one morning, I received an email from a number I didn't recognize.

It was from Vanessa.

She said she had found something while cleaning out a storage unit.

Something that belonged to me.

My first thought was that it would be another piece of the old marriage.

Another photograph.

Another document.

Another object I had forgotten.

She attached a photograph.

I opened it.

It showed a cardboard box.

Written across the side in black marker were three words.

CLARE — PERSONAL.

My breath caught.

I didn't recognize the box.

Vanessa wrote that Mark had stored it in the garage of their old apartment.

He had apparently taken it from our former house before the divorce.

She said she had not opened it.

She wanted to know whether I wanted it.

I stared at the screen.

There was something unsettling about the photograph.

Not because of the box.

Because of the handwriting.

I recognized it.

It was mine.

I had written those words years earlier.

I told Vanessa to keep the box sealed.

Then I called Emily.

“Mom?”

“I need to ask you something.”

“What?”

“Do you remember Dad moving anything from the old house before the sale?”

She was silent.

“Why?”

“Because Vanessa found a box.”

“What kind?”

“Mine.”

Another pause.

Then Emily said something that made my stomach tighten.

“Mom, I remember Dad saying there was one box he couldn't let the movers take.”

I sat very still.

“What was in it?”

“I don't know.”

I looked at the photograph again.

The box was old.

Dusty.

Its edges were bent.

And suddenly, the past I thought I had finished sorting through no longer felt finished.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: The Box Mark Had
