She knew Andrew drank coffee in the kitchen every morning. She knew I had asked her repeatedly to wear something over her towel. She knew Andrew left whenever she entered dressed that way. Yet every morning, she appeared at almost exactly the same time.

She was not forgetting.

She was watching.

One morning, she came downstairs while Andrew was pouring coffee. He saw her, paused, and quietly carried his mug into the living room.

Kayla waited until he disappeared.

Then she looked at me.

“He always does that?”

“Yes.”

“Interesting.”

“What’s interesting?”

“Nothing.”

But it wasn't nothing.

I began noticing other things. She would ask Andrew harmless questions when she knew he was nearby. She would stand in the kitchen doorway instead of going directly to the refrigerator. She would mention how handsome he looked after shaving, then immediately pretend she had been talking about his haircut.

None of it was enough by itself to confront her.

Together, it formed a pattern.

I hated that pattern.

Mostly because I didn't want to believe it.

Kayla was my sister. She had just been abandoned by the man she thought she would spend her life with. Part of me kept trying to explain her behavior through grief. Maybe she was desperate for reassurance. Maybe she was angry at Eric. Maybe she had lost her sense of what was normal.

But sympathy does not erase boundaries.

One afternoon, I found her sitting on the back steps with her phone in her lap.

“Any luck with the job search?”

“Not really.”

“Anything promising?”

“A couple of applications.”

I sat beside her.

“You’ll find something.”

She shrugged.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

“I mean it.”

She looked at me.

“You really think things will go back to normal?”

“Not exactly.”

“Why not?”

“Because normal doesn't have to mean going back.”

She looked down at her phone.

“I don't know who I am without Eric.”

That sentence softened me immediately.

I reached over and squeezed her shoulder.

“You're still Kayla.”

She smiled faintly.

For a moment, she looked like my little sister again.

Then she said, “Do you ever wonder whether you really know someone?”

I looked at her.

“Sometimes.”

“Six years is a long time.”

“Yes.”

“You'd think you'd know if a person was capable of hurting you.”

I didn't know what to say.

“Eric didn't cheat,” she continued. “He didn't hit me. waited.

“That's it?”

“That was it.”

Her voice tightened.

“I keep thinking there must be something I missed.”

I wanted to morning more complicated.

Kayla came downstairs in the towel again.

Andrew was already at the table.

He looked at me.

I gave the smallest shake of my wouldn't understand.”

“Try me.”

She took a sip of coffee.

“I think people show you who they are when they're given an immediately.

That silence was answer enough.

Then she smiled.

“Think of it that way if you want.”

“No.”

“I’m serious.”

“So am I.”

She set the mug down.

“If Andrew can be tempted by a woman in a towel, wouldn't you rather know now?”

I felt my you?”

That question stayed between us.

I realized then that this wasn't about me.

At least not entirely.

Kayla was trying to answer something inside herself.

But she had chosen my marriage as the laboratory.

“You don't get to use my husband to answer whatever question you're asking yourself.”

She picked that evening, I told him everything.

This time, he didn't look surprised.

“She actually admitted it?”

“Yes.”

He was quiet for a while.

Then he said, “Okay.”

“That's all?”

“No.”

He rubbed his forehead.

“I don't know what the right response is.”

“I don't either.”

“I could confront her.”

“You could.”

“But then she gets exactly what she wants.”

I looked at him.

“A reaction.”

“Right.”

He sighed.

“So I'll keep leaving.”

I didn't answer.

He reached across the table and took my hand.

“I don't want you dealing with this alone.”

“Then don't.”

He squeezed my fingers.

“I won't.”

For the next three days, Kayla continued.

She came downstairs in the towel.

Andrew left.

She watched him leave.

I told her to put on a robe.

She ignored me.

It became a ritual none of us wanted.

By Saturday night, I was exhausted.

Not furious.

Exhausted.

I was tired of hearing footsteps on the stairs and wondering what version of the morning waited at the bottom. I was tired of being forced to police a boundary that should never have required enforcement. I was tired of feeling like a guest in my own kitchen.

Then Sunday arrived.

I was standing at the counter buttering toast when I heard Kayla coming downstairs.

Andrew was at the table with his coffee and newspaper.

The footsteps stopped.

Then came the familiar sound of bare feet on hardwood.

Kayla appeared.

Same towel.

Same wet hair.

Same expression that said she had already decided I would be the unreasonable one.

I put the knife down.

“Kayla—”

Andrew touched my wrist.

“Wait.”

I looked at him.

He stood.

For the first time all week, he didn't leave.

He carried his coffee to the counter and set it down.

Then he folded his arms.

Kayla's face changed.

She smiled.

“Finally.”

Andrew looked at her calmly.

“You've been calling this a test all week, right?”

“Exactly.”

“Good.”

He reached into his pocket.

Then he smiled.

“Congratulations, Kayla.
