Kayla wore clothes when she came downstairs, Andrew stopped disappearing whenever she entered a room, and I no longer woke up wondering what confrontation the morning might bring.

The change was subtle enough that I almost trusted it too quickly.

Kayla found temporary work at a small accounting office on the other side of town. It was not the position she had wanted, and the pay was modest, but she came home on her first day carrying a paper bag with two pastries inside and an expression I had not seen on her face in weeks.

“I survived.”

Andrew looked up from the dining table.

“That sounds promising.”

“They gave me actual work.”

“That is generally what employers do.”

She threw one of the pastries at him.

He caught it.

I laughed.

It felt good.

Not perfect. Not completely repaired. But good.

Kayla also stopped talking about Eric.

That was perhaps the biggest change.

Before, his name had appeared in almost every conversation. Now, she rarely mentioned him unless something practical required it. She stopped checking his social media every night. She stopped asking me whether I thought he had already met someone else.

I assumed she was beginning to let go.

Then, on Thursday evening, her phone buzzed while we were eating dinner.

She glanced at the screen.

The fork in her hand stopped halfway to her mouth.

“What is it?” I asked.

“Nothing.”

She turned the phone face down.

Andrew continued eating.

I knew that look.

“Kayla.”

She sighed.

“It’s Eric.”

The room became quieter.

“What does he want?” I asked.

“I don't know.”

“You didn't open it?”

“I saw the first line.”

“What did it say?”

She stared at the table.

“He asked if we could talk.”

Andrew said nothing.

Kayla picked up her phone again.

“He says there are things he should have told me.”

My stomach tightened.

“What things?”

“I don't know.”

She opened the message.

Her eyes moved slowly across the screen.

Then she locked the phone.

“He wants to meet tomorrow.”

“Are you going?”

“I don't know.”

I reached across the table.

“You don't have to.”

“I know.”

She looked at me.

“But part of me wants answers.”

Andrew finally spoke.

“Just make sure you're looking for information, not permission to forgive him.”

Kayla looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

“It means he may explain what happened. That doesn't automatically mean the explanation fixes anything.”

She considered that.

Then she nodded.

“I think I need to hear him.”

I didn't like the idea.

But I understood it.

The next afternoon, she met Eric at a café downtown.

I did not ask her to report every word.

She came home two hours later carrying no shopping bag, no coffee, nothing except her purse and the same exhausted expression she had worn when she first arrived at our house.

I was in the kitchen.

Andrew was fixing a loose cabinet hinge.

Kayla stood by the doorway.

“He didn't cheat.”

I looked at her.

“That was the first thing he leave because of another woman.”

I waited.

“Then why?”

She looked toward the living room.

“He said he had been unhappy for almost two years.”

My chest tightened.

“Did he tell you?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“He said he didn't know how.”

I frowned.

“That doesn't explain why he let you believe everything was fine.”

“I asked him that.”

“What did he say?”

“He said every time he tried to talk about it, I told him we were supposed to be planning our future.”

Kayla sat down.

“I don't remember doing that.”

“Maybe you didn't mean to.”

She looked at me.

“He said I kept treating every problem like something we could solve by getting married.”

I sat opposite her.

“And what do you think?”

“I think he should have told me.”

“Yes.”

She looked down.

“I also think he was miserable.”

Neither of us spoke.

After a while, she said, “He told me something else.”

“What?”

“He said he was afraid of becoming the bad guy.”

I frowned.

“So instead he became one anyway.”

Kayla gave a tired smile.

“That’s what I told him.”

Andrew finished tightening the hinge and closed the cabinet.

“Did he ask you to come back?”

“No.”

That surprised me.

“He didn't?”

“No.”

“He just wanted you to know the truth.”

Kayla nodded.

“Or his version of it.”

That distinction mattered.

She spent the rest of the evening unusually quiet.

The next morning, she woke before everyone else.

I found her sitting at the kitchen table with her laptop open.

A spreadsheet covered the screen.

“What are you doing?”

“Budgeting.”

I leaned over her shoulder.

She had listed her income, transportation, food, phone bill, and potential rent.

“You're serious.”

“I need to know what I can afford.”

I smiled.

“That's good.”

She closed the laptop.

“It's terrifying.”

“That's also normal.”

She looked at me.

“Amanda?”

“Yeah?”

“Did I really make everything about Eric?”

I sat across from her.

“Sometimes.”

She nodded slowly.

“I think I did.”

“That's not the same as saying you were a bad girlfriend.”

“I know.”

She looked at the table.

“I just don't know what I am without somebody else deciding whether I'm enough.”

That sentence stayed with me.

I reached for her hand.

“Then don't figure that out by tomorrow.”

She smiled faintly.

“Okay.”

Over the following two weeks, Kayla changed in ways that were easy to miss.

She started waking earlier.

She began making her own breakfast.

She applied for jobs even after receiving rejection emails.

She stopped asking Andrew for advice about everything.

Most importantly, she stopped trying to provoke him.

There were no more suggestive comments.

No more lingering in doorways.

No more experiments.

One Saturday afternoon, Andrew was repairing a shelf in the garage when Kayla walked past.

“Need help?”

He looked surprised.

“Maybe.”

She held the other end of the board while he secured it.

For ten minutes, they worked without discussing the past.

Then Kayla said quietly, “I'm sorry.”

Andrew kept working.

“For what?”

“For making you uncomfortable.”

He tightened the screw.

“I appreciate that.”

“I was trying to prove something.”

“I figured.”

“To myself.”

“I figured that too.”

She smiled.

“You always answer like that?”

“Usually.”

“It's annoying.”

“I've been told.”

She laughed.

When I saw them from the doorway, I realized something had changed.

They weren't friends.

Not yet.

But they no longer needed to be wary of each other.

That mattered.

Then Kayla received another message.

This time, it wasn't from Eric.

It was from a woman named Lauren.

The message contained only one sentence.

I think you deserve to know why Eric really left.*

Kayla read it twice.

Then she looked at me.

“Who is Lauren?”

“I don't know.”

She opened the profile.

The woman appeared to be around our age.

There were photographs of her with Eric.

Not romantic photographs.

Not obviously.

But they knew each other.

Kayla's face went pale.

“I've never seen her before.”

Andrew walked into the room.

“What happened?”

Kayla handed him the phone.

He looked at the screen.

“Do you know her?”

“No.”

“Then ask her.”

Kayla hesitated.

“What if I don't like the answer?”

Andrew handed the phone back.

“You've already spent weeks afraid of an answer you didn't have.”

Kayla stared at the message.

Then she typed.

Who are you?*

The reply came less than a minute later.

Someone who knew Eric before you did.*

Kayla's fingers tightened around the phone.

A second message appeared.

And someone who knows what he didn't tell you.*

<a
