10 – Kayla Returned Home With Her Father’s Letter in Her Hands, But Eric’s Secret About Why He Walked Away Still Had One Final Piece Missing

When we returned home, Andrew was waiting in the driveway.

He opened Kayla's door before she could reach for the handle.

“You okay?”

She nodded.

“Not really.”

He didn't ask for details.

He simply took the envelope from her hand and carried it inside.

That small gesture nearly made her cry.

Inside, she placed the letter on the dining table.

Mom had already left.

The house was quiet.

Kayla sat down.

“I met him.”

Andrew looked at me.

“Daniel?”

She nodded.

“What was he like?”

“Old.”

Andrew smiled slightly.

“That wasn't what I meant.”

“I know.”

She looked at the letter.

“He knew Dad loved me.”

“Did he?”

“Yes.”

She rubbed her thumb over the envelope.

“That may be the hardest part.”

“Why?”

“Because I spent years thinking Dad treated me differently because I wasn't really his daughter.”

Her voice cracked.

“But he stayed.”

Andrew sat across from her.

“He chose you.”

“Yes.”

She looked down.

“And I spent weeks trying to prove that men eventually stop choosing you.”

I squeezed her shoulder.

“You were hurting.”

“I was also wrong.”

“Yes.”

She smiled faintly.

“I appreciate the honesty.”

“I've always been honest with you.”

“You told me the towel thing looked ridiculous.”

“It did.”

She laughed.

The sound was small, but real.

For the first time, the secret in the box did not feel like something that had destroyed the family.

It felt like something we could finally examine without being afraid of it.

Then Kayla's phone rang.

Eric.

She stared at the screen.

“I don't want to answer.”

“Then don't,” Andrew said.

She shook her head.

“No.”

She picked it up.

“I need to finish this.”

She answered.

“Hello?”

Eric's voice was strained.

“Did you find him?”

“Yes.”

“Did he tell you?”

“Enough.”

Silence.

“What did he tell you?”

“That you came here.”

“I did.”

“That you asked about Dad.”

“Yes.”

“And that you knew about Daniel.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“That you'd think I had betrayed you.”

“You did.”

“I know.”

Kayla closed her eyes.

“I need to understand something.”

“What?”

“Did you leave because of Daniel?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

Eric was quiet.

“I told you I was unhappy.”

“You did.”

“That was true.”

“But?”

“But I discovered something else.”

Kayla waited.

“I found evidence that your father had been receiving letters from Daniel for years.”

“So?”

“They weren't threats.”

“What were they?”

“Daniel kept asking whether he could meet you.”

Kayla frowned.

“Dad never showed me.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

“Because your father never gave them to you.”

“Then why did you care?”

“Because I thought he had manipulated both of you.”

Kayla sat forward.

“What do you mean?”

“I thought your father had deliberately kept Daniel away so you'd never know the truth.”

“That sounds possible.”

“I thought so too.”

“What changed?”

“I found another letter.”

Kayla's expression tightened.

“From Dad?”

“Yes.”

“What did it say?”

“He wrote that if anything happened to him, your mother should give you every letter.”

Kayla looked at me.

“That means the box.”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I found the letter after your father died.”

Kayla's voice dropped.

“Where?”

“In his office.”

“You told me you found records.”

“I did.”

“What else did you find?”

Eric hesitated.

“A medical report.”

Kayla went still.

“About Dad?”

“Yes.”

“What did it say?”

“That he had been diagnosed with heart disease.”

Kayla's eyes widened.

“Dad knew?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Years.”

I saw Kayla's hand begin to shake.

“Why didn't Mom tell me?”

“I don't know.”

Kayla ended the call.

She stared at the table.

Andrew moved closer.

“Kayla.”

“He knew he was sick.”

I nodded.

“He knew.”

“And he still spent his last years making sure I was okay.”

“Yes.”

She covered her face.

The grief that came out of her then was different from the anger she had carried for weeks.

This was grief for a man she had misunderstood.

For years she had remembered every time her father had been strict.

Every time he had questioned a boyfriend.

Every time he had told her to be careful.

She had interpreted those moments as distrust.

Now she wondered whether they had been fear.

Not fear of her.

Fear for her.

That night, Kayla opened every letter.

There were dozens.

Some were from Mom.

Some were from Dad.

Some were from Daniel.

Some had never been sent.

She read until nearly dawn.

In one letter, her father wrote about Kayla's first day of school.

In another, he described the first time she rode a bicycle.

In another, he complained humorously about her habit of leaving wet towels on the bathroom floor.

Kayla laughed through tears.

“He remembered everything.”

I sat beside her.

“Yes.”

She touched one page.

“He really was my dad.”

“You never needed biology to prove that.”

“I know.”

She leaned back.

“I just wish he had trusted me with the truth.”

“So do I.”

At sunrise, Kayla closed the final letter.

She looked exhausted.

But something in her face had changed.

She was no longer searching for one person to blame.

Not Eric.

Not Daniel.

Not Mom.

Not Dad.

Not herself.

That didn't erase what each person had done.

It simply meant she could see the difference between someone's choices and her own worth.

Later that morning, she called Eric.

He answered.

“I read the letters.”

“I know.”

“I understand why you were afraid.”

“Thank you.”

“But I still don't understand why you left without telling me.”

“I thought you deserved a chance to build a life without me.”

“That wasn't your decision.”

“I know.”

She took a breath.

“Did you ever stop loving me?”

Eric was silent.

“No.”

Kayla closed her eyes.

That answer hurt.

Not because she wanted him back.

Because it made the ending more complicated.

“Then why?”

“Because loving someone isn't always enough to make the life work.”

Kayla nodded slowly.

“I think I finally understand that.”

“I’m sorry.”

“I know.”

She ended the call.

Andrew looked at her.

“How do you feel?”

“Sad.”

“Anything else?”

“Free.”

He nodded.

That afternoon, Kayla opened the spreadsheet she had started weeks earlier.

She moved numbers around.

Then she smiled.

“I can afford the room.”

I looked at her.

“You're sure?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Next month.”

The answer startled me.

Not because she was leaving.

Because she had finally stopped waiting for someone else to decide when she was ready.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: Kayla Chose a Small Room of Her Own and Faced the Last Question Her Father
