I'll be home soon.”

Something about the tenderness in his voice made me look away.

My own family had not sounded like that in years.

The doctor arrived shortly afterward.

He examined my eyes and asked what had been used.

“I don't know.”

“Do you have the container?”

“No.”

“My sister took it.”

He documented everything.

He said the irritation appeared consistent with exposure to a substance that had temporarily interfered with my vision, but he could not identify the substance without testing.

Miriam asked whether a blood or urine test could help.

“Possibly,” he said. “The sooner, the better.”

I looked at the clock.

“How soon?”

“Now.”

So we went.

The test results would take time.

But by then the story had changed.

It was no longer simply my word against Lena's.

There was a medical record.

A missing phone.

A missing wallet.

A missing set of keys.

A missing folder.

A witness.

A surveillance camera.

And a phone call in which Lena had acknowledged enough to make Miriam believe we were dealing with deliberate conduct.

But we still needed the original trust.

Without it, we could not verify the handwritten instruction.

That became the priority.

Daniel returned from the bus stop around noon.

He had found the camera.

The store across the road had footage.

I listened while he described it.

“Your sister's car stops at 8:17.”

My heart tightened.

“What happens?”

“You get out.”

“Can you see me?”

“Yes.”

“Then what?”

“She walks you to the shelter.”

I swallowed.

“Does she leave?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“About two minutes.”

“Then she comes back?”

“No.”

Miriam leaned forward.

“What happens before she leaves?”

Daniel hesitated.

“She takes something from your coat pocket.”

My stomach dropped.

“My phone.”

“Probably.”

“Then?”

“She looks at you for several seconds.”

“And drives away?”

“Yes.”

“Anything else?”

Daniel looked at Miriam.

“She appears to take something from the car and place it in her own bag.”

“The folder,” I whispered.

“Probably.”

Miriam wrote something down.

“Did the footage show her giving Claire anything?”

“No.”

“Did she appear concerned?”

Daniel shook his head.

“She looked calm.”

That hurt more than I expected.

Calm.

As if abandoning me had been an ordinary errand.

As if she had planned every minute.

Miriam made another call.

This one was to the bank.

An hour later, she returned with a statement.

“There was a second transfer.”

I stared at her.

“When?”

“The morning of your appointment.”

“How much?”

“Eighty thousand.”

“To Northbridge?”

“No.”

“Where?”

She slid the statement across the desk.

I could barely believe the account number.

“It went to Lena personally.”

Daniel said nothing.

I stared at the paper.

My sister had not simply been moving estate money.

She had been paying herself.

Miriam tapped the transaction.

“There's more.”

“What?”

“The transfer description.”

I looked.

It read: ADVANCE — CLAIRE APPROVED.

My hands went cold.

“I never approved that.”

“I know.”

Miriam leaned back.

“That is why we need the original trust.”

“Could Lena have forged my approval?”

“Yes.”

“Then why would she leave a record?”

“She may have assumed no one would challenge it.”

I thought of all the times she had told me not to worry about paperwork.

All the times she had placed documents in front of me and said, “Just sign here.”

My stomach turned.

“How many times?”

Miriam understood immediately.

“We don't know.”

She began reviewing older records.

Daniel stood beside the window.

I watched him through the blur that remained in my vision.

He turned suddenly.

“There.”

“What?”

“A car.”

We all looked outside.

A dark sedan was parked across the street.

My heart began pounding.

“Is that Lena?”

“I don't know.”

Daniel watched it carefully.

The vehicle remained for several minutes.

Then it pulled away.

Miriam called the police.

Not because we knew who had been watching.

Because we finally understood that Lena might be trying to find out what we knew.

That afternoon, the laboratory called.

The doctor had received the first preliminary result.

There was evidence of a chemical irritant.

Not enough to identify the exact substance yet.

But enough to confirm that my symptoms had not been imagined.

Miriam closed her eyes for a moment.

Then she said, “We have to move now.”

“Where?”

“To court.”

“Today?”

“Yes.”

“For what?”

“To freeze the disputed estate assets.”

I looked at her.

“Can we do that?”

“We can request it.”

“And the clause?”

“If the court accepts that there is credible evidence of coercion or incapacitation, it strengthens our position.”

I thought about my mother.

About her letter.

About the sentence she had written.

Do not give Lena control merely because she tells you that you are incapable of handling it.

I had spent years believing my mother had trusted Lena more.

Now I wondered whether the opposite was true.

Maybe my mother had trusted me to eventually see the truth.

Miriam gathered the files.

“There's still one problem.”

“The original trust.”

“Yes.”

“We need to find it.”

I thought about Lena's house.

“She took it home.”

“Then we can't simply walk in.”

“I know.”

Daniel looked at me.

“What if she doesn't have it?”

“What do you mean?”

He reached into his coat and removed a photograph.

It showed a storage box.

On the side was a handwritten label.

My mother's handwriting.

ESTATE — ORIGINALS.

My breath caught.

“Where did you get that?”

“The footage from the store.”

I stared at the photograph.

It had been captured when Lena opened the trunk of her car.

Behind the folder was the storage box.

Daniel zoomed in.

The label was unmistakable.

Miriam took the photograph.

Then she turned it over.

On the back was another image.

A close-up of the box.

And beneath the label, barely visible, was a second line of handwriting.

I read it aloud.

“Only to be opened by Claire.”

Miriam went completely still.

Daniel looked at me.

I looked at him.

For years, I had believed my sister had taken control because my mother had wanted her to.

Now I understood the real danger.

Lena had not stolen the trust because it belonged to her.

She had stolen it because it did not.

And somewhere inside that box was the instruction my mother had spent years making sure I would eventually find.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Box Marked With My Name Was Missing From Lena’s House,
