8 – The Altered Deed Exposed a Deeper Betrayal, and I Had to Decide Whether Protecting My Family Still Mattered More Than Protecting Myself

That evening, I sat alone in my apartment with the altered deed open on my laptop.

The original document was beside it.

Same property.

Same date.

Different owner.

The real deed named Alder Harbor Properties.

The altered copy named Richard Bennett.

Dad.

Someone had taken a legal document and changed it.

Not misunderstood it.

Not misread it.

Changed it.

I called Nora.

She answered immediately.

“I was expecting your call.”

“I have the altered deed.”

“I know.”

“How?”

“Daniel contacted me.”

I stared at the screen.

“Can you prove it was altered?”

“Yes.”

“Can we trace who did it?”

“Possibly.”

“Would it be enough for legal action?”

She paused.

“That depends on how it was used.”

“It was submitted to a lender.”

“That matters.”

I leaned back.

“Do you think Dylan did it?”

“I don't know.”

“Who else?”

“That is the question.”

She told me not to confront anyone until the documents were secured.

I agreed.

Then she said something I wasn't prepared for.

“Mara, there is another file.”

“What file?”

“One I found when I reviewed the original property transaction.”

My heart tightened.

“What?”

“A letter from your father.”

I frowned.

“I don't remember a letter.”

“You weren't supposed to.”

“What does it say?”

Nora hesitated.

“I think you should read it in person.”

The next morning, I went to her office.

She placed a sealed envelope on the desk.

The handwriting was Dad's.

My name was written across the front.

I stared at it.

“When did he write this?”

“Three years ago.”

“Why didn't you give it to me?”

“He instructed me not to unless certain conditions were met.”

“What conditions?”

“If the property became subject to another financial claim.”

I looked at her.

“And now it has.”

“Yes.”

I opened the envelope.

The letter was only two pages.

Dad wrote that he had known he could no longer manage the property debt.

He admitted he had considered letting the house go.

Then he wrote about me.

He said he knew I had been sacrificing more than I admitted.

He said he was ashamed.

But the final paragraph stopped me.

He had written that if I ever acquired the property, I should not allow the family to treat it as an entitlement.

He had asked Nora to make sure I understood that the house was mine, regardless of whether I chose to let them remain.

I lowered the letter.

“He knew.”

Nora nodded.

“He knew you had become the person keeping everything together.”

“Then why did he act like I was just helping?”

“Because knowing someone is carrying you and admitting that they are carrying you are different things.”

I folded the letter.

“I don't know what to do with this.”

“You don't have to decide today.”

But I did.

At least about one thing.

I would no longer allow my family to rewrite reality simply because the truth embarrassed them.

That afternoon, I returned to the townhouse.

Mom opened the door.

Her eyes were swollen.

“Your father is upstairs.”

“Where's Dylan?”

“He hasn't come home.”

I walked inside.

The house looked different.

Maybe because I finally saw it as property rather than inheritance.

The furniture was familiar.

The walls were familiar.

But none of it belonged to the version of my family I had imagined as a child.

Dad was sitting at the kitchen table.

I placed the letter in front of him.

He stared at it.

“Nora gave this to you.”

“Yes.”

He closed his eyes.

“I didn't want you to read that.”

“Why?”

“Because I was ashamed.”

“You keep saying that.”

“Because it's true.”

I sat across from him.

“Did you know Dylan was going to use the house?”

“I knew he wanted money.”

“That isn't what I asked.”

Dad looked at me.

“I knew he was talking to someone about using the property.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

“Dad.”

“I swear.”

I believed that part.

But there was still something he wasn't saying.

“Did you tell him about Alder Harbor?”

“No.”

“Did you tell him Nora handled the purchase?”

“No.”

“Then how did he know enough to ask Evan for property records?”

Dad shook his head.

“I don't know.”

I believed him.

Mostly.

Then Mom entered the kitchen.

She stopped when she saw the letter.

“What is that?”

Dad didn't answer.

I looked at her.

“A letter Dad left with Nora three years ago.”

Mom picked it up.

She read the first page.

Then the second.

When she finished, she sat down.

“You bought this house because of us.”

“I bought it because I didn't want you to lose it.”

She looked at me.

“And we repaid you by throwing you out.”

I didn't answer.

Mom began crying.

“I didn't know.”

“I know.”

“I thought Dylan was right.”

“I know.”

She covered her face.

“I was so proud of him.”

That sentence hurt.

Not because she was proud of Dylan.

Because she had never seemed curious about what I had built.

I looked toward the staircase.

“Mom, being proud of someone doesn't mean you have to make someone else smaller.”

She nodded.

“I understand that now.”

I hoped she did.

Then the front door opened.

Dylan walked in.

He stopped when he saw us.

His face was exhausted.

“I need to talk to you.”

I stood.

“About what?”

He looked at Dad.

“Not here.”

Dad's expression changed.

“Why?”

Dylan swallowed.

“Because I found out who gave Evan the original property information.”

My heart stopped.

“You know?”

He nodded.

“Who?”

Dylan looked at me.

“Someone who has been trying to get access to Northline for months.”

Rebecca.

Daniel.

Evan.

All the names moved through my mind.

“Who?”

Dylan hesitated.

Then he said the name.

I felt the room tilt.

It was someone I had trusted.

Someone who had been close enough to know about my company, my family, and the property.

Someone who had benefited from my silence.

I stared at Dylan.

“Tell me exactly what happened.”

He took a breath.

“I will.”

Then he reached into his jacket and placed a flash drive on the table.

“I recorded the conversation.”

Nobody moved.

The small black drive sat between us.

And suddenly, the entire story I thought I understood had become something much larger.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: The Recording Revealed Who Had Been Feeding My Brother Information, and the
