I knew the particular crease that appeared between his eyebrows when he was worried about money. I knew the way he rubbed his jaw when he was trying to remember whether he had locked the garage. I knew his silence when he was angry and his louder-than-necessary jokes when he was nervous.

What I did not know was how easily that familiar face could look at me and pretend our marriage had already ended.

I would learn that at the company party.

But before that night, there had been weeks of small things I had explained away because the alternative was too painful to consider.

Carl and I both worked for the same company. We had been there for about ten years, though our departments rarely overlapped. I worked in operations, while Carl spent most of his time in regional sales.

Our schedules were different enough that we had built separate routines without really noticing.

We had two children, both old enough to live their own lives. Our mortgage was almost paid off. The house had become quieter over the years, especially after the kids stopped leaving backpacks and dirty sneakers in every hallway.

For a long time, I thought the quiet meant we had earned some peace.

Maybe that was why I ignored the distance between us.

Carl wasn’t openly cruel. That would have been easier to recognize.

Instead, he became impatient.

If I asked about his day, he answered with one or two words.

If I mentioned dinner, he said he wasn’t hungry.

If I suggested we go somewhere on the weekend, he usually had something else to do.

Our conversations became a list of practical matters.

The mortgage payment was due.

The washing machine was making a strange noise.

Our son needed paperwork.

Our daughter had called.

The tires on the car needed replacing.

We were still functioning as a family, but somewhere along the way, Carl had stopped behaving like a husband.

I told myself this happened in long marriages.

People changed.

People got tired.

People reached difficult seasons.

I had no proof of anything worse.

Then, a few days before the company party, Carl mentioned Sheila.

He was standing at the kitchen counter, scrolling through something on his phone while I packed leftovers into a container.

“I need to get to the party early Saturday.”

I looked up.

“Why?”

“Meeting Sheila.”

The name meant nothing for half a second.

Then I remembered her.

“Sheila from sales?”

“Yeah.”

“The younger woman who works with your regional accounts?”

He gave me a quick glance.

“You make her sound like she’s twelve.”

“I didn’t say that.”

He put his phone in his pocket.

“We have some client handover stuff to go through.”

“Handover?”

“Nothing complicated.”

I wiped my hands on a dish towel.

“What are you handing over?”

Carl sighed.

It was a small sound, but I felt it.

“Laura, please don’t turn everything into an interrogation.”

I stared at him.

“I asked one question.”

“And I answered it.”

He walked away before I could respond.

I remained in the kitchen, listening to his footsteps disappear upstairs.

That conversation bothered me far more than it should have.

Not because he had mentioned Sheila.

Because of the way he had said her name.

There was familiarity in it.

Not the ordinary familiarity of coworkers.

Something softer.

Something he had forgotten to hide.

Still, I pushed the thought aside.

I had been married to Carl for twenty-three years. I wasn’t going to accuse him of cheating because he had a coworker and a bad mood.

The following Saturday, Carl left the house almost three hours before I did.

He was dressed more carefully than usual.

Dark trousers.

A pressed shirt.

The watch I had given him for our fifteenth anniversary.

He stood near the front door checking his phone.

“You look nice,” I said.

He seemed distracted.

“Thanks.”

Then he kissed the side of my head.

It wasn’t really a kiss.

It was the kind of gesture people perform because they know they are supposed to.

“I’ll see you there.”

He left.

I watched his car disappear through the front window.

For reasons I couldn’t explain, I stood there longer than necessary.

Then I went upstairs and changed.

The company had rented a private dining room at a restaurant outside the city for the end-of-quarter celebration. There would be speeches, drinks, food, and the usual mixture of people pretending they enjoyed listening to management discuss quarterly performance.

I expected nothing more than an uncomfortable evening.

I was wrong.

When I entered the private room shortly after seven, I heard Carl laughing.

His laugh was familiar.

That made what I saw even worse.

He was standing near the bar.

Sheila was beside him.

His arm was around her waist.

Not casually.

Not because the room was crowded.

His hand rested firmly against her side, and she was leaning into him as though they had done it a hundred times.

I stopped walking.

For a few seconds, my mind refused to understand what my eyes were showing me.

Maybe there was an innocent explanation.

Maybe she had stumbled.

Maybe they were posing for a photograph.

Maybe I had simply walked in at an awkward moment.

Then Carl leaned toward her.

He whispered something close to her ear.

She smiled.

He smiled back.

And neither of them noticed me.

Or perhaps they did.

I will never know which possibility hurt more.

I walked toward them.

“Carl.”

His head snapped around.

His expression changed so quickly that I almost laughed.

Surprise.

Fear.

Then something harder.

His arm remained around Sheila.

“Laura.”

The conversations around us began to fade.

People turned.

Someone lowered a glass halfway to their mouth.

I looked directly at his hand.

Then at him.

“What is this?”

Sheila stepped slightly away.

Carl did not answer immediately.

Instead, he looked around the room.

There was something strange in his expression.

Not guilt.

Not shame.

Relief.

It was as if I had just done something for him by discovering the secret myself.

Finally, he exhaled.

“Well,” he said quietly, “I guess there isn’t much point pretending anymore.”

My stomach tightened.

“Pretending what?”

He looked at Sheila.

Then back at me.

“I’m with her.”

The words were simple.

The room seemed to tilt.

I stared at him.

“You’re what?”

“I’m with Sheila.”

Sheila’s face changed.

“Carl—”

He lifted one hand.

“No. We have to stop hiding.”

I looked at her.

She wouldn’t meet my eyes.

“How long?”

Carl hesitated.

“That doesn’t matter.”

“It matters to me.”

He looked irritated.

And that irritation, more than anything else, made something inside me go cold.

He wasn’t sorry.

He was annoyed that I was asking questions.

“I’ve been unhappy for a long time,” he said.

“You could have told me.”

“We both knew things weren’t good.”

“No. You knew things weren’t good.
