a thick folder.

Across the top of the plaque were the words:

THANK YOU FOR TEN YEARS, CARL.

For one brief second, his shoulders relaxed.

Then he looked “Sheila.”

“No.”

She turned toward him.

“You said she knew.”

He looked angry.

“You don't have to do this here.”

“Apparently I do.”

Her voice trembled.

“You told me you and Laura had been separated for months.”

I stared at Carl.

“We were sleeping in the same bed Thursday.”

Sheila's face went pale.

Carl looked away.

She whispered, “You said you were staying in the guest room.”

He remained silent.

A woman near the bar covered her mouth.

I recognized her as Megan from accounting.

She had known Carl for years.

Sheila looked at me.

“I swear I thought you knew.”

I believed that she believed it.

That didn't erase what had happened.

But it explained something.

Carl had created a story for every person around him.

He had told me one story.

He had told Sheila another.

And apparently he had told his coworkers something else entirely.

Megan approached slowly.

“There is more.”

Carl turned toward her.

“Megan.”

She affair?”

“I didn't say affair.”

“You said I was seeing someone.”

“I was trying to explain why we were separating.”

“You were trying to explain?”

My voice rose.

“You invented a person.”

He looked exhausted.

“I needed people to understand.”

“No. You needed people not to question you.”

Nobody spoke.

The truth of that seemed to settle over the room.

Carl looked down.

I had spent twenty-three years assuming that when something went wrong, we would eventually talk about it.

I had believed marriage meant that even painful truths were shared between two people.

But Carl hadn't been sharing anything.

He had been managing information.

David broke the silence.

“Carl, there is another issue.”

Carl looked up.

David turned toward Sheila.

“You submitted a relocation request last week.”

Sheila frowned.

“Yes.”

“To the same region?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

She looked toward Carl.

“Because he told me there was a position there.”

David shook his head.

“There isn't.”

Sheila stared at him.

“What?”

“I checked the staffing report myself.”

Her eyes moved slowly toward Carl.

“You told me there was.”

“I said there might be.”

“No.”

She stepped closer.

“You told me it was approved.”

Carl swallowed.

“I was working on it.”

“You told me the paperwork was finished.”

“I thought it would be.”

“You told me you had an apartment.”

Carl's silence answered her.

Sheila's face tightened.

“You don't have an apartment?”

“I was looking.”

“You told me the deposit had been paid.”

That made several people gasp.

I stared at Carl.

The finances.

The joint accounts.

The mortgage.

There was no room for a secret apartment deposit unless he had taken money somewhere I didn't know about.

I stepped forward.

“With what money?”

He looked at me.

“Laura.”

“With what money, Carl?”

He said nothing.

David looked at him.

“Did you use company funds?”

“No.”

“Then?”

Carl rubbed his hands together.

“I had savings.”

I knew our finances.

He had savings.

Not enough for what he had promised.

And certainly not enough to build a second household six hours away.

Sheila understood at the same moment I did.

“You lied about the apartment too.”

“I was going to sort it out.”

“You lied about the job.”

“I was going to sort it out.”

“You lied about your marriage.”

“I was going to sort it out.”

She laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“How exactly?”

Carl had no answer.

Sheila picked up her purse.

“I need to leave.”

Carl reached for her arm.

She stepped away.

“Don't touch me.”

He froze.

She walked toward the exit.

At the door, she stopped and looked back.

“You made me believe I was starting a life with a man who was already free.”

Her eyes moved toward me.

“I am sorry.”

Then she left.

The room remained silent.

Carl looked at me.

“I never wanted to hurt you.”

I almost couldn't believe he had said it.

“You brought me here.”

“I didn't know you were going to come.”

“It's a company party.”

“You could have stayed home.”

I stared at him.

That sentence told me more than any confession could have.

He had imagined this evening without me.

Perhaps that was the part I had needed to understand.

He had already begun living as though I no longer existed.

He just hadn't had the courage to tell me.

David walked over.

“Carl, we need to speak privately.”

Carl nodded.

Before they left, David looked at me.

“You can go home.”

I shook my head.

“Not yet.”

He seemed surprised.

I looked around the room.

These people were Carl's coworkers.

They had watched him humiliate me.

They had also just watched his version of reality collapse.

I didn't want to run.

Not because I needed revenge.

Because I wanted to hear the truth while it was finally being spoken.

David and Carl stepped into a smaller room at the side of the restaurant.

The door closed.

I sat again.

Megan came over.

She didn't sit until I nodded.

“I am so sorry.”

“I know.”

“I really believed
