Most of it could have been obtained from documents you gave him.”

“He had access to everything.”

“Exactly.”

My father pulled out a chair.

“Then we assume nothing else is secure until we verify it.”

I nodded.

The exhaustion I had been carrying since the wedding disappeared beneath something colder.

I was no longer trying to understand why Owen had betrayed me.

I was trying to determine how much damage he had already done.

Julia opened her laptop.

“We need to contact the lenders first thing tomorrow.”

“Can we do it tonight?”

“Some offices will be closed, but their fraud departments may still have reporting channels.”

She looked at me.

“And we need to preserve every communication.”

I reached for my phone.

There were three missed calls from Owen.

I stared at his name.

My father noticed.

“Don't answer.”

“I wasn't going to.”

Another call came.

This time I let it ring.

A message appeared immediately afterward.

Please call me. We need to talk privately.

I showed it to Julia.

She nodded.

“Save it.”

I did.

Then another message arrived.

You don't understand what happened.

I saved that one too.

The third came several minutes later.

I never wanted this to hurt you.

I stared at those words until the screen dimmed.

He never wanted it to hurt me.

He had simply wanted it to benefit him.

There was a difference.

Julia called one lender using the number printed on the application.

After several transfers, we reached someone in fraud prevention.

The representative asked whether I had authorized a loan application secured against my property.

“No.”

“Did you sign or electronically approve any documents?”

“No.”

“Do you recognize the email address used during the application?”

Julia looked at me.

I checked the document.

My stomach tightened.

The email address was one I had used only for wedding planning.

Owen had access to it.

The representative continued.

“We'll place a temporary hold while the matter is reviewed.”

“Thank you.”

She gave us a reference number.

I wrote it down.

Then she asked a question that made me sit straighter.

“Have you recently changed your marital status?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Three days ago.”

There was a pause.

“Understood.”

After the call ended, I looked at Julia.

“Why did she ask that?”

“Because the application may have been submitted using information suggesting you and Owen were financially connected.”

My father frowned.

“But they weren't.”

“Not officially,” Julia said.

I felt another chill.

Owen had been planning ahead.

He had not waited until after the wedding.

He had been building a financial trail around us before we ever exchanged vows.

We stayed at the condo until nearly midnight.

Before leaving, my father checked every window.

Julia locked the financial folder inside a small case she had brought with her.

“You're not sleeping here alone,” my father said.

“I wasn't planning to.”

He looked relieved.

I went upstairs to collect a few things.

The bedroom still contained flowers from the wedding.

The veil lay across a chair.

My shoes were beside the bed.

I stood there for several seconds.

This was supposed to be the room where I began my married life.

Instead, it had become the place where I discovered my marriage had been constructed around a financial scheme.

I opened the nightstand.

Inside was a small velvet box.

I had forgotten it was there.

When I opened it, I found the necklace Owen had given me on our first anniversary.

For a moment, I considered throwing it away.

Instead, I closed the box.

I didn't want to make decisions while I was furious.

Downstairs, my phone vibrated.

Owen again.

This time the message was different.

Your father is making this worse.

I read it twice.

Then I understood.

Owen knew my father was involved.

He knew Julia was involved.

And he was already trying to separate me from them.

I showed the message to my father.

He smiled without humor.

“That tells us enough.”

“What?”

“He's worried.”

The next morning, we met at Julia's office.

She had arranged the documents across a conference table.

Three applications.

Three lenders.

Three different amounts.

The first was for $240,000.

The second was for $310,000.

The third was for $185,000.

All referenced the same property.

I stared at the numbers.

“He couldn't have expected all three to go through.”

“No,” Julia said.

“He probably intended to see which one approved first.”

“And then use the others as leverage?”

“Possibly.”

She pointed to the dates.

The applications had been submitted over a period of several weeks.

The earliest was filed before the wedding.

The newest had been submitted two days after the wedding.

I felt sick.

“So while I was choosing flowers, he was doing this.”

Julia didn't soften the answer.

“Yes.”

My father leaned back.

“There's another issue.”

Julia nodded.

“The applications contain statements about household finances.”

“What statements?”

“That you and Owen had agreed to share certain obligations.”

I shook my head.

“We never agreed to that.”

“Then we need to establish what you actually agreed to.”

She opened another folder.

Emails.

Messages.

Bank records.

Receipts.

I looked through them one by one.

There were dozens.

Owen had asked questions about my trust.

I had answered.

He had asked about the condo.

I had answered.

He had asked whether my grandmother's estate had restrictions.

I had answered.

At the time, each question had seemed normal.

Together, they looked like research.

I felt my throat tighten.

“He was studying me.”

Julia didn't disagree.

“He was studying your finances.”

My father placed his hand over mine.

“That's why you don't blame yourself.”

I looked at him.

“I should have seen it.”

“No.”

His voice was firm.

“You trusted someone you loved. He abused that trust. Those are not the same decision.”

I looked away.

For the first time since the wedding, I allowed myself to cry.

Nobody tried to stop me.

When I finished, Julia pushed a tissue box across the table.

Then she said, “We need to consider whether he accessed anything else.”

I wiped my face.

“Like what?”

“Your email. Your bank account. Your identification documents.”

I froze.

“My passport.”

“What about it?”

“Owen helped me renew it before the wedding.”

Julia looked at me.

“Where is it?”

“At home.”

She closed her laptop.

“Then we check it.”

We returned to the condo.

The passport was in the drawer where I kept travel documents.

It was still there.

So was my driver's license.

But one envelope was missing.

It contained an old copy of my grandmother's trust paperwork.

I stared at the empty space.

“I know that was here.”

My father looked at Julia.

Julia's expression hardened.

“Then we document that too.”

I sat on the floor beside the cabinet.

Suddenly the entire relationship seemed to rearrange itself.

The questions.

The paperwork.

The condo.

The refinance applications.

The wedding.

Even the honeymoon.

I remembered Owen saying the honeymoon would be a chance for us to “get everything settled.”

At the time, I had thought he meant emotionally.

Now I wondered what documents he had planned to put in front of me while I was far from everyone who could advise me.

That evening, Owen arrived at the condo.

My father was still there.

Julia was there too.

Owen stopped when he saw them.

“I need to speak with my wife.”

Julia answered before I could.

“She'll speak with you when she's ready.”

He looked at me.

“Mara.”

I remained seated.

“What do you want?”

“I want to explain.”

“Then explain.”

He glanced at my father.

“I never planned to take your money.”

I waited.

He swallowed.

“The condo was complicated.”

“How?”

“I thought you would eventually want us to use it together.”

“That isn't what you told your mother.”

His eyes flickered.

“You recorded me.”

“Yes.”

“You know how easily that can be misunderstood.”

I almost laughed.

“Then tell me what I misunderstood.”

He said nothing.

I stood.

“You submitted three loan applications.”

His face changed.

“I was trying to understand our options.”

“You used my information.”

“I was your husband.”

“You had been my husband for three days.”

He looked at me with something close to anger.

“You think I'm some stranger.”

“No.”

I looked at my ring.

“That is the problem.”

He took a step forward.

I stepped back.

He noticed.

His expression fell.

“Mara, I love you.”

I believed he had said those words before.

I no longer knew what they meant.

“You loved what you thought I could provide.”

He shook his head.

“That isn't fair.”

“Neither was this.”

I pointed toward the documents.

He looked at them.

Then at me.

And finally, he said something that answered the question I had been afraid to ask.

“If we separate now, you'll destroy me.”

I stared at him.

“That sounds like a threat.”

“No.”

He rubbed his face.

“I'm saying you don't know what happens next.”

I understood then.

Owen was not asking me to save our marriage.

He was asking me to protect him from the consequences of ending it.

I stepped toward the door.

“You need to leave.”

He looked at me.

“For how long?”

“For good.”

He stood there silently.

Then he placed his wedding ring on the table.

“Fine.”

He walked out.

I waited until the door closed.

Only then did I notice that his ring was not actually on the table.

He had taken it with him.

The object he left behind was something else.

A key.

The spare key to the office where I kept the trust documents.

I stared at it.

Then at Julia.

She understood immediately.

“Change the locks.”

I nodded.

Because the missing envelope had suddenly stopped being a mystery.
