showed a man in his thirties, standing on a red carpet.

Dark hair.

Green eyes.

A crooked smile.

Something about his face stopped me.

Not because I recognized him.

Because I recognized her.

Lily had the same eyes.

The same slight bend in the left eyebrow.

The same habit of tilting her head when she was skeptical.

I looked back at Lily.

“No.”

“You haven't even said anything.”

“I know what you're thinking.”

“Then quietly.

“I know it.”

I sat on the edge of her desk chair.

“Lily, I've told you about your father.”

“No, you isn't everything.”

I stared at her.

“Who told you that?”

“You did.”

“I told you he left.”

“You never told me who he was.”

“I don't know where he is now.”

“That isn't what I asked.”

She swiped through several photographs.

Max at a premiere.

Max in an interview.

Max laughing beside another actor.

Then she showed me a photograph from sixteen years earlier.

He looked younger.

But the eyes were unmistakable.

“He was filming near our town around the time you were pregnant.”

I said nothing.

“He was here.”

“Lots of actors film here.”

“But he was.”

“That doesn't mean anything.”

She looked at me with tears gathering in her eyes.

“Then why do we look like this?”

I had no answer.

That frightened me more than her accusation.

Because for years, I had avoided thinking about Lily's father.

Not because I didn't remember him.

Because I remembered too much.

His laugh.

The way he used to tap his fingers against the steering wheel.

The night I told him I was pregnant.

The silence that followed.

The next morning, he was gone.

He never married me.

He never came back.

I had called until the number stopped working.

I had written letters.

Some were returned.

Some disappeared without an answer.

Eventually, I stopped looking.

Lily knew the basic version.

She did not know how badly I had wanted him to stay.

She did not know how long I had waited.

And she certainly did not know how much shame I still carried about being abandoned.

“I never met Max,” I said.

“You could be lying.”

The words hit harder than I expected.

“Why would I lie about that?”

“Because you don't want me to find him.”

“Lily, I don't even know him.”

She shook her head.

“You always have an answer.”

“I don't have an answer for why you resemble him.”

That stopped her.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she said, “Exactly.”

She went back into her room.

I remained in the hallway.

That evening, I did something I had promised myself I would never do.

I searched for Max.

I watched interviews.

Looked at photographs.

Read old articles.

And the more I saw him, the more uncomfortable I became.

There were expressions Lily had made since childhood that suddenly seemed different.

The way she smiled when she was trying not to laugh.

The way she narrowed her eyes when she suspected someone was lying.

Even the slight movement of her mouth before she answered a difficult question.

I told myself resemblance proved nothing.

It didn't.

But I also understood why my daughter was convinced.

The next few days became a quiet war.

Lily stopped coming downstairs while I cooked.

She carried meals to her room.

She watched interviews with Max through headphones.

Whenever I walked past her bedroom, I heard his voice.

One evening I knocked.

“Want to watch it together?”

“No.”

“I thought maybe—”

“You'll just tell me everything he says isn't true.”

Then she closed the door.

That hurt more than shouting would have.

The next morning, I checked her bedroom door before leaving for work.

It was unlocked.

I almost felt relieved.

Then I noticed something on the desk.

Her phone.

The screen was open.

And underneath Max's photograph was a payment page.

The amount was three hundred dollars.

I stared at it.

Then I heard footsteps behind me.

Lily stopped in the doorway.

Her face went white.

“Mom.”

I turned.

“Who are you sending money to?”

She didn't answer.

And suddenly I knew that whatever had happened in Los Angeles was no longer only about a confused teenager and a famous actor.

Someone else had found the crack in her certainty.

And they were trying to widen it.

<a
