He kept the legal records because they were part of the estate, but he promised to provide certified copies if we needed them.

The strange thing was that finding the truth did not make me feel relieved.

It made me feel angry.

For fifteen years, I had carried one explanation: he had left because he did not want us.

It had been a terrible explanation, but at least it had been simple.

Now I knew it was incomplete.

He had tried to contact me.

I had tried to contact him.

Letters had been intercepted.

Threats had been made.

And somewhere in the middle of it all, a little girl had grown up believing her father had chosen not to know her.

Lily broke the silence first.

“Do you think he knew about the trust?”

“I don't know.”

“His father did.”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't he tell him?”

“Maybe he did.”

She looked at me.

“Wouldn't that mean he wanted me to have it?”

“Possibly.”

“I don't care about the money.”

“I know.”

“Then why does everyone keep talking about it?”

“Because money was part of the reason your grandfather was afraid of losing control.”

She stared out the window.

“I hate that.”

“So do I.”

When we reached home, Lily carried the folder upstairs.

I expected her to lock the door.

She didn't.

Instead, she returned ten minutes later carrying her laptop.

“Can we talk to Dad again?”

I nodded.

We contacted him that evening.

His face appeared on the screen.

He looked nervous.

Lily held up one of the letters.

“We found these.”

His expression changed immediately.

“Where?”

“My uncle took us to your father's old house.”

He closed his eyes.

“I was afraid those might still exist.”

“You knew?”

“I knew my father kept records.”

“Did you know he kept our letters?”

“No.”

Lily showed him the birthday card.

His hand covered his mouth.

“I wrote that.”

“I know.”

“I thought it was gone.”

“It wasn't.”

He stared at her.

“I never stopped writing.”

“How many letters?”

“I don't know.”

“Hundreds?”

“Maybe.”

She swallowed.

“Why didn't you come yourself?”

He looked down.

“I tried.”

“When?”

“Several times.”

“Then why didn't you fight harder?”

The question was blunt.

He did not defend himself.

“You're right to ask.”

“That's not an answer.”

“No.”

He took a breath.

“I was afraid of losing everything.”

Lily frowned.

“Everything except me?”

He looked directly at her.

“I was twenty-one.”

“You were my father.”

“I know.”

“Being young doesn't change that.”

“No.”

The honesty in his answer made the room quiet.

He didn't tell her she was wrong.

He didn't ask her to forgive him.

He simply accepted the weight of what she was saying.

“I should have found another way,” he said.

“Yes,” Lily answered.

He nodded.

“I should have.”

I watched my daughter carefully.

This was not the reunion I had imagined when I was younger.

There was no sudden embrace.

No perfect apology.

No sentence that could restore fifteen lost years.

There was only a man and a teenage girl beginning to understand that love could exist alongside failure.

Lily finally asked, “Do you want to meet me?”

He smiled sadly.

“More than anything.”

“Then come.”

He looked stunned.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Here.”

He nodded.

“I'll come.”

The call ended.

Lily closed the laptop.

“What happens now?”

“We take it one day at a time.”

She shook her head.

“That's what adults always say.”

I laughed.

“You're right.”

“I want something more specific.”

“Then tomorrow we call a lawyer.”

She nodded.

“And after that?”

“We figure out the legal part.”

“And after that?”

“You meet your father.”

She looked nervous.

“Are you coming?”

“If you want me there.”

“I do.”

The next morning, we met with an attorney recommended by Angela.

Her name was Rachel.

She listened for almost an hour while Lily explained everything.

Rachel reviewed the trust documents, the letters, the old threats, and the evidence concerning the withheld correspondence.

She did not make promises.

She explained that establishing biological paternity would require proper legal procedures.

A DNA test could establish a biological relationship.

But the trust and other legal questions were separate matters.

Lily listened carefully.

“So if the test says he's my father, that proves biology.”

“Yes.”

“But it doesn't fix everything.”

“No.”

Lily looked at me.

“I knew that.”

Rachel nodded.

“That's an important distinction.”

The DNA test was arranged.

The samples were collected without ceremony.

Lily swabbed her cheek.

Her father did the same through a certified facility.

Then came the waiting.

It lasted eleven days.

Those eleven days were strange.

Lily returned to school.

Some classmates knew she had caused trouble during the trip.

Others knew only that she had been withdrawn.

Ms. Carter checked on her regularly.

One afternoon, Lily came home and said, “Someone asked if Max is really my dad.”

“What did you say?”

“No.”

“Did you explain?”

“No.”

“Good.”

She smiled.

“I'm learning.”

But the question of her biological father had become less frightening now that she had seen his face.

She began calling him occasionally.

At first, their conversations lasted five minutes.

Then ten.

Then nearly an hour.

He told her about his work.

She told him about school.

They discovered they both hated raisins.

They both liked old mystery movies.

He laughed exactly the way Lily did when she was embarrassed.

That made her happy.

It also made her sad.

One evening she said, “It feels like I'm getting pieces of a life that should have been mine.”

I had no comforting answer.

So I told her the truth.

“You can't get the old years back.”

“I know.”

“But you can decide what happens with the years ahead.”

She nodded.

The DNA result arrived on a Monday morning.

I opened the email.

Lily stood beside me.

“Read it.”

I looked at the first line.

Probability of paternity: 99.99%.

I closed my eyes.

“He's your father.”

Lily didn't react.

Not immediately.

She sat down.

Then she whispered, “I knew.”

“You weren't sure.”

“I wanted to be.”

She began crying.

I put my arm around her.

This time she held on tightly.

“I have a dad,” she said.

“Yes.”

She laughed through tears.

“I actually have one.”

“Yes.”

Then her expression changed.

“What about him?”

“Your father?”

“Is he okay?”

We called him.

When he saw our faces, he knew.

He began crying before we said anything.

Lily smiled.

“You're my dad.”

He covered his eyes.

“Yes.”

The word came out broken.

“I am.”

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Lily said, “You owe me fifteen birthdays.”

He laughed through his tears.

“I know.”

“I'm serious.”

“I know.”

“You have a lot of catching up to do.”

“I'll spend the rest of my life trying.”

She smiled.

“That sounds exhausting.”

“It probably will be.”

They laughed.

It was not a perfect reunion.

It was not supposed to be.

But it was real.

And for the first time, Lily's question had an answer.

Her father had not forgotten her.

He had failed her.

Those were not the same thing.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: Meeting Her Father in Person Felt Nothing Like Lily Had
