one thought repeating in my head.

Bellamy's.

For four months, I had served people there without knowing that my mother had once walked through the same doors carrying evidence restaurant looked completely different without customers.

The tables were bare.

Chairs stood upside down on polished floors.

The pendant lights were dimmed.

The smell of coffee and disinfectant hung in the air.

I walked toward table twelve.

I stopped.

The booth looked ordinary.

Too ordinary.

“This is where they sat.”

Julian nodded.

I touched the edge of the table.

“This is where the ring fell.”

“Yes.”

I looked toward the unlocked it.

The room was neat.

Too neat.

No family photographs.

No clutter.

Only filing cabinets, a desk, and a framed photograph of Bellamy's from decades earlier.

I walked toward it.

There was a woman standing behind the original bar.

Young.

Dark-haired.

Smiling.

My mother.

I touched the glass.

“She worked here.”

Julian stared at the photograph.

“I've seen that picture hundreds of times.”

“You never noticed her?”

“No.”

I turned.

“Why?”

He looked embarrassed.

“Because I never knew who she was.”

I opened the first drawer.

Invoices.

Payroll records.

Supplier contracts.

Nothing.

The second drawer contained employee records.

The third was locked.

Julian gave me the key.

“Evelyn never lets anyone touch this.”

The lock clicked.

Inside were several folders.

One carried my mother's name.

I pulled it out.

The first page was a handwritten note.

Margaret Vance — meeting confidential.

I looked at Julian.

“Margaret.”

He nodded.

Another folder contained receipts.

Dates.

Payments.

Names.

Then I found a storage-unit agreement.

The renter's name was Margaret Vance.

The address was only three miles from Bellamy's.

I grabbed my phone.

“Can we go there?”

Julian nodded.

Before we left, something caught my eye.

A small brass key lay beneath the folder.

There was a number engraved on it.

318.

My heart stopped.

Room 318.

My mother's hospital room.

I picked it up.

Julian saw my expression.

“What?”

I showed him.

He didn't understand.

I did.

Someone had used the hospital room number as a clue.

But why?

We drove to the storage facility.

The office manager checked the agreement.

“Unit 318,” he said.

He led us down a long concrete corridor.

The key fit.

Inside was a blue metal box.

My mother's box.

I stood frozen.

Julian looked at me.

“Open it.”

My hands shook.

The lid lifted.

Inside were documents.

Bank statements.

Photographs.

Copies of trust records.

And a small cassette tape.

I picked up the first photograph.

My mother stood beside Daniel Mercer.

Evelyn was there too.

And Arthur.

The three men and women looked younger.

They were smiling.

But on the back of the photograph, my mother had written:

Before I knew what they were doing.

I opened a folder.

There were transaction records.

Several payments had been made to companies that did not appear to exist.

I turned another page.

The names of the companies were connected to addresses.

One address was familiar.

My mother's old house.

My stomach dropped.

Someone had been using her address.

I continued searching.

Then I found a list of names.

Not employees.

Not beneficiaries.

Witnesses.

Several names had been crossed out.

Some were marked deceased.

Others simply had one word beside them.

Gone.

Julian looked over my shoulder.

“What does that mean?”

“I don't know.”

At the bottom of the page was my mother's handwriting.

If I disappear, do not trust anyone who says the money is the reason.

I looked at the cassette.

“What is this?”

Julian found an old player in another box.

The batteries were dead.

We bought replacements from the storage office.

When the tape finally played, there was static.

Then my mother's voice.

“If you're hearing this, something happened.”

My entire body went cold.

She sounded calm.

Almost unnaturally calm.

“I don't know who will find this. Maybe Laura. Maybe Chloe. Maybe no one.”

A pause.

“Arthur will tell you the trust was the problem.”

I looked at Julian.

“He'll say I became frightened because I misunderstood the accounts.”

The recording crackled.

“That isn't true.”

My mother's voice became quieter.

“The trust was being used to move money, but the money was not the real secret.”

I leaned closer.

“The real secret is who was receiving it.”

Static.

Then a name.

Evelyn Mercer.

I stopped the tape.

Julian stared at me.

“Evelyn.”

The owner of Bellamy's.

The woman who had supposedly been protecting my mother's box.

The woman whose husband had been a trustee.

I restarted the tape.

My mother's voice continued.

“Evelyn knows what Daniel did.”

The tape clicked.

Then silence.

I looked at Julian.

“She knew.”

“Apparently.”

“And she kept this here.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Before he could answer, footsteps sounded outside the storage unit.

Julian turned.

A shadow moved across the corridor.

“Who's there?”

No answer.

He stepped toward the doorway.

I grabbed his arm.

“Don't.”

The footsteps stopped.

Then someone ran.

Julian chased them.

I stayed inside, clutching the box.

Thirty seconds later, he returned.

“No one.”

“Did you see them?”

“Only their coat.”

“Anything else?”

He shook his head.

I looked at the documents.

Someone knew we had found the box.

We had been watched.

Again.

I closed the lid.

“We need to get this somewhere safe.”

Julian nodded.

But when we stepped outside, I noticed something lying beneath the windshield wiper.

An envelope.

My name was written across it.

I opened it.

Inside was one sheet of paper.

Stop looking for answers in the past.

The person beside you is the reason your mother disappeared.

I looked at Julian.

He looked at me.

Neither of us spoke.

Then my phone rang.

Evelyn.

I answered.

Her voice was trembling.

“Laura, where are you?”

“Why?”

“Because someone broke into my office.”

I looked at Julian.

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

“Then why call me?”

“Because they were looking for the same thing you're looking for.”

“What?”

Her voice dropped.

“The second ledger.”

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“What second ledger?”

There was a long silence.

Then Evelyn whispered:

“The one your mother hid from Arthur.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: The Second Ledger Was Missing, Evelyn Was Terrified, and the Evidence Pointed Toward Someone Standing Much Closer Than Arthur

I left the hospital with one thought repeating in my head.
