minutes.”

She laughed softly.

“What happens in the next ten minutes?”

“You finish breakfast.”

“I haven't things.

Coffee.

Breakfast.

The weather.

The ridiculous amount of traffic expected around the venue.

When we hung up, I felt calmer.

At eight, I drove to the venue.

The parking lot was already filling.

A florist's van stood near the side entrance.

Two catering trucks were unloading.

A man in a black suit hurried past carrying a box of champagne glasses.

I stopped beside my truck.

For a moment, I simply watched.

This was the same place where I had once been told that my size might ruin the photographs.

Now nobody seemed concerned with photographs.

They were concerned with getting the chairs straight.

That made me smile.

Inside, the venue manager greeted me.

“Mr. Carter.”

“Morning.”

“Everything is ready.”

“Any problems?”

She her.

“Linda?”

“Yes.”

“Is she here now?”

“No.”

“What happened?”

“She came to the entrance and asked to see the bride.”

“And?”

“Emily declined.”

I nodded.

The manager lowered her voice.

“She wasn't happy.”

“Did she cause a scene?”

“No.”

That was almost more concerning.

“Where did she go?”

“I don't know.”

I thanked her.

Before I could say anything else, I heard Emily's voice from the hallway.

“Dad?”

I turned.

She was wearing a pale bride.

Not the woman caught between families.

Just Emily.

She ran toward me and hugged me.

I held her carefully.

“You made it.”

“I good.”

She laughed.

Then her expression changed.

“Linda came.”

“I heard.”

“She asked me to meet her.”

“Are you going to?”

“No.”

I nodded.

“She said she has something for me.”

“What?”

Emily shook her head.

“I don't know.”

“Do you want me to find out?”

“No.”

She took my hand.

“I don't want you fixing this anymore.”

I looked at her.

“Good.”

“I want to handle it.”

“Then handle it.”

She smiled.

“Okay.”

A wedding coordinator came rushing toward us.

“Emily, we need you upstairs.”

She looked at me.

“Don't disappear.”

“I won't.”

She squeezed my hand.

Then she was gone.

I walked toward the ballroom.

My name was printed on a place card near the front.

I stared at it.

Not because the position mattered.

Because the card existed.

Someone had finally stopped trying to erase me.

I sat down.

A few minutes later, Matt approached.

He looked exhausted.

His tie wasn't straight.

“Hey.”

“Hey.”

“You okay?”

“I've been better.”

He laughed nervously.

“Same.”

We shook hands.

Then he looked toward the entrance.

“I don't know where my mother is.”

“You don't need to know right now.”

“I feel guilty.”

“I know.”

“She raised me.”

“She did.”

“And she's still my mother.”

“I know.”

He looked at me.

“But today isn't about punishing her.”

“No.”

“It's about marrying Emily.”

He nodded.

“I love her.”

“I know.”

“And I should have stood up sooner.”

“Yes.”

He winced.

I put a hand on his shoulder.

“Don't spend today apologizing.”

“Then what should I do?”

“Be the husband she needs.”

He nodded.

“I will.”

At ten thirty, guests began arriving.

My sister came first.

She hugged me so tightly I nearly dropped my phone.

“You look handsome.”

“Don't tell anyone.”

She laughed.

Then she looked around.

“Is Linda really not coming?”

“I don't know.”

My sister lowered her voice.

“I heard things.”

“So did I.”

She shook her head.

“I never understood why she was so concerned with appearances.”

I looked at the ballroom.

“Some people mistake appearance for stability.”

My sister nodded.

Soon the room filled.

My employees arrived.

Two neighbors.

Old friends.

People Emily had invited herself.

Every one of them greeted me normally.

Nobody cared about my shoulders.

Nobody measured me against the chairs.

Nobody looked at me as though I had wandered into the wrong room.

At eleven fifteen, Matt's father approached.

His name was Richard.

He shook my hand.

“I owe you an apology.”

I studied him.

“For what?”

“For not speaking up.”

I didn't answer.

He continued.

“I heard enough over the last few weeks to know what was happening.”

“Why didn't you say anything?”

He looked uncomfortable.

“I thought it was between Linda and Emily.”

“It wasn't.”

“I know that now.”

He glanced toward the ceremony doors.

“My wife has always believed she has to control everything.”

“And today?”

“She won't be controlling this.”

I nodded.

“I appreciate you saying that.”

Richard looked at me for a moment.

“Your daughter loves you.”

“I know.”

“She talks about you constantly.”

I smiled.

“That's embarrassing.”

He laughed.

Then he said something that stayed with me.

“She doesn't need a smaller father.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“She needs the father she has.”

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he squeezed my shoulder.

“I'll see you inside.”

At noon, the coordinator announced that the ceremony would begin in twenty minutes.

I checked my watch.

My hands were suddenly cold.

I had built houses.

I had stood on roofs during storms.

I had negotiated contracts worth more money than I cared to remember.

None of it prepared me for walking my daughter down an aisle.

Emily appeared at the end of the hallway.

Her dress was simple and elegant.

No extravagant decoration.

No enormous train.

No theatrical entrance.

Just Emily.

She looked at me.

I couldn't speak.

She smiled.

“You okay?”

I nodded.

“You?”

“No.”

I laughed.

She came closer.

“Dad.”

“Yeah?”

“Thank you for coming.”

I frowned.

“I wouldn't miss it.”

“I know.”

She reached for my arm.

Then she stopped.

“Ready?”

I looked at her.

“As I'll ever be.”

We walked toward the doors.

The music began.

The doors opened.

And for the first time that entire week, I stopped thinking about Linda.

I stopped thinking about the photographs.

I stopped thinking about the money.

I stopped thinking about the seating chart.

I looked at my daughter.

That was enough.

As we started down the aisle, I noticed someone standing at the very back of the room.

A woman in a gray coat.

Linda.

She wasn't seated.

She wasn't smiling.

She simply stood there watching.

Emily saw her too.

Her fingers tightened around my arm.

I whispered:

“Keep walking.”

She did.

We reached Matt.

He looked at Emily as though the rest of the room had disappeared.

Then he looked at me.

There was no embarrassment in his face.

Only gratitude.

I placed Emily's hand in his.

For a moment, I didn't let go.

I looked at Matt.

“Take care of her.”

“I will.”

I looked at Emily.

She smiled through tears.

Then I stepped aside.

The ceremony began.

And Linda remained at the back.

Click here to continue reading: PART
