noon.

I had expected to feel afraid.

Instead, I felt strangely calm.

The house was still occupied.

Celeste's car stood beneath the garage awning.

Grant's truck was parked beside it.

Blake's motorcycle was near the side gate.

Marianne stopped me before we approached.

“You are not going inside.”

“I know.”

“The sheriff will handle possession later.”

I nodded.

We walked around the rear of the property.

The detached structure stood behind a line of overgrown hedges.

I had never noticed it as a child.

The door was dark wood, almost black from age.

There was a small brass lock beneath the handle.

I took out the key.

It fit.

I turned it.

The lock clicked.

Neither of us spoke.

I pushed the door open.

The room smelled of paper, dust, and cedar.

Shelves covered three walls.

Boxes filled the lower cabinets.

A narrow desk stood beneath a window.

On it was a ledger.

Marianne stayed near the doorway while I stepped inside.

I touched the nearest box.

My grandfather's handwriting was written across the lid.

Property.

I opened it.

Inside were copies of deeds, tax records, insurance papers, and correspondence.

Everything had been organized.

Not hidden randomly.

Catalogued.

I moved to another box.

Family.

Photographs.

Letters.

Legal documents.

And then I saw my father's name.

The box contained several envelopes.

One was addressed to me.

I opened it with shaking hands.

My father had written it months before his death.

He apologized for not telling me everything.

He said he believed secrecy would protect me.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

He wrote that he had discovered evidence that Grant had been using property documents connected to the family trust.

I read the paragraph twice.

Grant had apparently approached lenders using assets he did not own.

My father's refusal had caused a serious dispute.

Then there was another name.

Celeste.

My father's letter said he had begun to suspect that she knew more than she admitted.

I sat down.

Marianne read the letter over my shoulder.

“He knew,” I whispered.

“He suspected.”

“About them.”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't he tell me?”

“Because he may have believed the danger was temporary.”

I turned the page.

There was one final instruction.

If something happens to me, ask Marianne for the blue folder.

I closed my eyes.

The blue folder.

That was why Celeste had reacted.

She knew.

Maybe not everything.

But enough.

I stood.

“We need it.”

Marianne nodded.

The problem was that the folder wasn't in the archive.

We searched the boxes.

Nothing.

We checked the desk.

Nothing.

Then I remembered the photograph.

The bookshelf.

My father's study.

We returned to the house entrance.

Before we could approach, the front door opened.

Celeste stood there.

She was wearing the same diamond earrings my father had given her.

Her face was expressionless.

“What are you doing here?”

Marianne stepped forward.

“We're here regarding the property.”

Celeste looked at me.

“This is my home.”

“No,” I said.

She smiled.

“You really believe that?”

“I know.”

She laughed softly.

“You've been talking to Marianne.”

“Yes.”

“I wondered how long that would take.”

Grant appeared behind her.

His expression changed when he saw Marianne.

“Get off the property.”

Marianne didn't move.

“The recorded deed says otherwise.”

Grant stepped onto the porch.

“That deed is under dispute.”

“No,” Marianne said. “It isn't.”

Celeste's eyes shifted between us.

Then she noticed the key in my hand.

Her face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

She recognized it.

“What is that?”

I closed my fingers around it.

“Nothing.”

Grant looked at Celeste.

She shook her head.

Blake appeared behind them with his phone.

“Should I record this too?”

Marianne turned.

“You should stop recording.”

Blake laughed.

“Why?”

“Because everything you record can become evidence.”

His smile disappeared.

Celeste stepped forward.

“You have no right to come here.”

“I have every right.”

“This house was your father's.”

“My father left it to me.”

“He didn't.”

“The deed says he did.”

She stared at me.

For the first time, she looked uncertain.

Grant stepped in.

“Enough.”

He pointed toward the gate.

“Leave.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

Something passed between us.

A silent calculation.

Then Grant turned toward Celeste.

“Call the attorney.”

She did.

While she was speaking, my phone vibrated.

A message had arrived from an unfamiliar number.

The blue folder is in the study.

I looked toward the upstairs window.

My father's reading lamp was still on.

I showed Marianne.

She read it.

“Don't go up there.”

“Why?”

“We don't know who sent that.”

I agreed.

But then Blake walked outside.

He was holding a cardboard box.

He set it beside the trash bins.

“Found some old junk in Dad's study,” he said.

My eyes went to the box.

A corner of blue paper showed through the opening.

I stopped breathing.

Blake saw me looking.

His mouth lifted.

“You want it?”

I didn't answer.

He picked up the box.

“Too late.”

Grant called him back.

Blake carried it inside.

Marianne immediately called the investigator.

Within an hour, the situation changed.

The investigator arrived with another officer.

They explained that the blue folder might contain evidence relevant to the financial investigation.

Celeste protested.

Grant demanded a warrant.

They obtained one.

The search began.

I waited outside.

An hour passed.

Then two.

Finally, the investigator came out carrying a sealed evidence bag.

Inside was the blue folder.

My heart hammered.

“Where was it?”

“In a locked drawer.”

“Was it intact?”

“Yes.”

“What's inside?”

“We're still processing it.”

I nodded.

The investigator looked at me.

“There's something else.”

“What?”

He lowered his voice.

“There are copies of loan applications in your name.”

I stared at him.

“My name?”

“Yes.”

“But I never applied for a loan.”

“We know.”

Marianne stepped closer.

“Are they signed?”

“They appear to be.”

“By her?”

“We're sending them for examination.”

I felt sick.

Someone had used my identity.

Someone had used my property.

And someone had expected me to disappear before I discovered it.

That evening, the investigator called.

The signatures on the loan documents were not mine.

The identification attached to them had my name but another person's photograph.

The lender had already frozen the application.

Grant had attempted to borrow against property he did not own.

And he had used my identity to make the transaction appear legitimate.

The evidence was no longer just about an inheritance dispute.

It was fraud.

Serious fraud.

The next morning, Marianne placed a printed email in front of me.

It had been recovered from the blue folder.

Grant had written it.

The message was short.

Bring your ex if you want. Both of you need to understand what happens if this goes public.

My mother had been helping my father investigate the financial records.

That explained something I had never understood.

She hadn't been involved in his business.

She had been helping him because she trusted him.

And now both of them were dead.

I looked at the email again.

“Was this sent before they were killed?”

“Yes.”

“How long before?”

“Four days.”

The room went silent.

I thought about the attack.

The funerals.

The driveway.

Celeste's urgency.

Grant's anger.

Blake filming me while I gathered my mother's ashes.

Every detail seemed to belong to the same picture now.

But there was still one piece missing.

Who had turned financial fraud into murder?

The investigator didn't speculate.

He simply said, “We're following the money.”

I understood.

For once, I didn't need an answer immediately.

I needed proof.

That afternoon, Celeste called me.

I almost didn't answer.

I did.

“What do you want?”

Her voice was trembling.

“What have you done?”

“Nothing.”

“The bank froze everything.”

I said nothing.

“They're questioning Grant.”

Still nothing.

“You went to Marianne.”

“Yes.”

“You have no idea what you're doing.”

“Then tell me.”

Silence.

“You're making a mistake.”

“No,” I said. “I think my father did.”

“What do you mean?”

“I think he trusted the wrong people.”

She hung up.

I stared at the phone.

Then Marianne entered the room.

“We have another problem.”

“What?”

“The lender found the person who submitted the application.”

“Who?”

Marianne placed a photograph on the table.

I recognized the face immediately.

It wasn't Grant.

It wasn't Celeste.

It was someone I had never seen before.

But beneath the photograph was a company name.

And that company had received payments from Grant.

The investigation had just widened.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: The Evidence They Thought Was Buried Began Connecting My Parents’ Deaths to the House They Had Tried to Steal

We returned to the property just after noon.
