5 – The Second Clue Was Hidden Where My Father Kept His Oldest Records, and It Pointed Toward Someone I Had Never Suspected

The next morning, Marianne arrived before nine with three file boxes and a folder sealed in clear plastic.

She placed everything on the conference table without speaking.

I looked at the boxes.

“Those are all from Dad?”

“Everything recovered from the archive, his office, and the storage unit your father rented under a company name.”

“A company name?”

“Yes.”

I pulled out a chair.

“What company?”

Marianne opened the folder.

“Vale Accounting Services.”

I frowned.

“That was Dad's old business.”

“Exactly.”

“He closed it years ago.”

“Officially.”

She slid a document toward me.

The company had never actually been dissolved.

It had simply stopped operating publicly.

My father had kept it active because certain contracts, accounts, and historical records still passed through it.

I read the registration documents.

Then I noticed the date of the most recent filing.

Three months before his death.

“Why would he reactivate it?”

Marianne shook her head.

“That is what we're trying to determine.”

She opened the first box.

Inside were ledgers arranged by year.

I recognized my father's handwriting immediately.

Numbers filled every page.

Payments.

Transfers.

Invoices.

Names.

Most of it meant nothing to me.

Then Marianne placed a magnifying glass beside one ledger.

“Look at the margins.”

I leaned closer.

My father had written tiny letters beside certain transactions.

At first they looked like abbreviations.

Then I realized they formed initials.

G.M.

D.M.

C.H.

I recognized D.M.

Daniel Mercer.

The loan broker.

“G.M. is Grant,” I said.

Marianne nodded.

“C.H.?”

“Celeste Hale.”

I stared at the page.

My father's wife had been part of the records.

Not necessarily part of the crime.

But she had appeared often enough to be tracked.

“Why did Dad keep this?”

“Because he suspected something.”

I turned another page.

The same initials appeared beside payments.

Some were small.

Others were substantial.

Then I found something that made me stop.

A payment had been made from my father's company to an account belonging to my mother.

I looked up.

“Why was Dad paying Mom?”

Marianne checked the date.

“Three weeks before their deaths.”

“Do you know why?”

“No.”

I searched through the ledger.

Another payment.

Then another.

The amounts were different, but each one carried the same handwritten mark.

A small triangle.

I pointed at it.

“What does that mean?”

“I don't know.”

My father's old habits were suddenly becoming a language.

And I didn't know how to read it.

We spent nearly two hours comparing the marked transactions.

Eventually, Marianne found a pattern.

Every triangle corresponded to a payment connected to the same account.

The account belonged to a company called Northbridge Holdings.

I had never heard the name.

Marianne had.

She immediately reached for her phone.

“Wait here.”

She stepped outside.

When she returned, her expression had changed.

“What?”

“Northbridge Holdings is registered to Daniel Mercer.”

I looked at the ledger.

“So Dad was paying the same man who later submitted the fraudulent loan.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“That is the question.”

I felt frustration building.

“Everything keeps leading back to Mercer.”

“Then perhaps he wasn't simply the broker.”

She opened another file.

Inside was a photograph of Mercer standing beside Grant at a charity dinner.

The photograph had been taken two years earlier.

I stared at it.

“Were they friends?”

“Business associates, apparently.”

“How long?”

“At least five years.”

That meant Grant had known Mercer long before the loan application.

It also meant my father's investigation had been going on much longer than I had realized.

Marianne turned another page.

“This is where things become more complicated.”

She showed me a property transfer.

A small commercial building had been purchased through Northbridge Holdings.

The money came from an account connected to Grant.

The building was later sold.

The profit went into another account.

I traced the dates.

Then I saw something familiar.

The final transfer had occurred four days before my parents were killed.

I pushed the document away.

“That's not coincidence.”

“No.”

“Could it be connected to the attack?”

“Possibly.”

I stood.

“We need to know who received the final payment.”

“We do.”

Marianne turned the page.

The recipient was a private security company.

Its owner was a man named Elias Ward.

I had never heard that name either.

“Security?”

“Yes.”

“For what?”

“We don't know.”

I looked at the photograph of Grant and Mercer.

Then at the payment.

Then at the date.

“Maybe Dad did.”

“What?”

“Maybe he hired security.”

Marianne shook her head.

“If he did, there would be records.”

“Unless he didn't trust the company.”

She stared at me.

I suddenly remembered something my father used to say.

Never put everything in one place.

He had said it when teaching me how to keep passwords.

I had always assumed he meant computers.

Now I wasn't so sure.

I searched through the boxes again.

Near the bottom was an old notebook.

The cover was cracked.

Inside, my father had written a list of names.

Some had numbers beside them.

Some had dates.

One line simply read:

Ward — verify independently.

I showed Marianne.

“That's our man.”

She nodded.

“We need to find him.”

That afternoon, the investigator contacted us.

Elias Ward had been located.

He owned a security company outside the city.

But when questioned about Grant, he denied knowing him.

When shown the financial records, he admitted receiving the payment.

He claimed it was for consulting work.

“What kind of consulting?” I asked.

The investigator didn't answer immediately.

“Surveillance.”

My stomach tightened.

“Surveillance of whom?”

“You.”

I stared at him.

“Me?”

He nodded.

“Your father had hired Ward's company to monitor activity around the property.”

“Why would Dad monitor me?”

“He wasn't monitoring you.”

He paused.

“He was monitoring people who approached you.”

I thought about the messages.

The fraudulent documents.

The pressure to leave.

Someone had been watching the people around me.

But who?

The investigator handed me a photograph.

It showed Grant outside my father's office.

Another showed Mercer meeting him.

A third showed Celeste talking to a man I didn't recognize.

The photograph had been taken two weeks before my parents' deaths.

“Who is that?”

“We're still identifying him.”

I looked at the man's face.

Something about him felt familiar.

Not from the house.

Not from my father's office.

Somewhere else.

I couldn't place it.

Then Marianne noticed the background.

“That's the restaurant near your mother's apartment.”

I looked again.

My mother had eaten there every Thursday.

The man was waiting outside.

The investigator took the photograph back.

“We'll investigate it.”

I nodded.

That night, I couldn't sleep.

I kept thinking about the brass key.

At two in the morning, I took it from the drawer.

The number engraved on the tag was still there.

I searched through my grandfather's documents.

Nothing.

Then I remembered his words.

Keep it somewhere they won't look.

Not don't lose it.

Don't let them find it.

I searched the archive again.

The next morning, I found a photograph of my grandfather standing beside the old house.

Behind him was a wooden cabinet.

On the cabinet was a small metal box.

The lock looked exactly like the one the key had opened.

I showed Marianne.

She stared at the photograph.

“I've seen that cabinet.”

“Where?”

“In your grandfather's study.”

“It's gone.”

“Maybe not.”

We returned to the archive.

At the rear of the room was an old cabinet covered by boxes.

We moved them.

There it was.

The same cabinet.

I inserted the brass key.

The lock opened.

Inside was a single envelope.

My grandfather had written my name on it.

I opened it.

There was only one sentence.

When they tell you the house was the prize, look beneath the house.

I looked at Marianne.

“What does that mean?”

She stared at the floor.

Then she said quietly:

“I think your grandfather left something underground.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: Beneath the Floorboards Was a
