6 – Beneath the Floorboards Was a Room No One Had Mentioned, and the Records Inside Changed the Meaning of My Father’s Final Warning

We spent the next hour searching for a way beneath the archive.

There was no obvious trapdoor.

No staircase.

No loose board.

Nothing that looked unusual.

Marianne called the investigator.

He arrived with a property specialist.

Together, they examined the old building.

The specialist eventually found a narrow seam beneath the floorboards.

He tapped the wood.

The sound changed.

“Hollow.”

My heart began pounding.

The boards were lifted carefully.

Beneath them was a steel hatch.

There was no handle.

Only a keyhole.

I looked at the brass key.

Marianne looked at me.

“Your grandfather planned this.”

I inserted the key.

The hatch opened.

Cold air rose from below.

A narrow staircase descended into darkness.

The investigator went first.

I followed.

The room beneath the archive was smaller than I expected.

Concrete walls.

Metal shelves.

A single worktable.

And rows of locked cabinets.

There were no valuables.

No money.

No jewelry.

Only records.

Thousands of pages.

My father's handwriting appeared on several boxes.

My grandfather's appeared on others.

I stood in the center of the room.

“This is what they were protecting.”

Marianne nodded.

The investigator opened the nearest cabinet.

Inside were financial documents dating back more than fifteen years.

The oldest records concerned property transfers.

The newer ones concerned shell companies.

Northbridge Holdings appeared repeatedly.

So did several other businesses.

Grant's name appeared beside some.

Mercer's beside others.

Celeste's appeared less frequently.

But she was there.

Then we found the oldest document.

It was a letter from my grandfather to my father.

The letter explained that Grant had attempted to use family property as collateral years earlier.

My grandfather had stopped him.

But he had warned my father that Grant was not acting alone.

A group of outside investors had been helping him move assets through temporary companies.

My father had apparently spent years tracking them.

I read the pages slowly.

The picture was becoming clearer.

Grant wasn't trying to steal one house.

He had been using properties as pieces in a larger financial scheme.

The house was valuable because of its land.

But it wasn't the only asset.

My grandfather had moved ownership into a trust specifically to keep the property out of Grant's reach.

That explained the secrecy.

It also explained the key.

I opened another cabinet.

Inside were copies of bank correspondence.

One envelope carried my mother's name.

I opened it.

My mother had been investigating payments connected to the same network.

She had apparently discovered that several elderly property owners had been pressured into selling valuable land below market value.

My father had helped her trace the transactions.

They had been working together.

Not against each other.

For each other.

I sat down.

“She knew.”

Marianne nodded.

“She was helping him.”

I looked at the documents.

“Then they were both targets.”

“Likely.”

The investigator examined another folder.

“There's something here.”

He pulled out a handwritten page.

The top line read:

If something happens, follow the insurance payment.

I felt cold.

“What insurance payment?”

He continued reading.

A life insurance policy had been purchased on my father's business partner years earlier.

The policy had eventually been canceled.

But the payout had triggered a chain of payments involving Mercer.

The investigator photographed the page.

“This gives us another direction.”

I walked toward the shelves.

Something caught my eye.

A small box labeled with my mother's initials.

I opened it.

Inside was a notebook.

Her handwriting was softer than my father's.

The first page contained dates.

The second contained names.

Then I saw one name repeated.

Elias Ward.

I stared.

“Ward again.”

Marianne came closer.

My mother had written that Ward had once worked security for my grandfather.

Then he had left.

Later, he had started his own company.

My father had hired him again.

The investigator frowned.

“Why would your mother be tracking him?”

I turned the page.

There was an answer.

Ward had witnessed a meeting between Grant and Mercer.

He had also reported that someone else was present.

The same unidentified man from the photograph.

The man's name was written in my mother's handwriting.

Victor Hale.

I stared at the surname.

“Hale?”

Marianne's face tightened.

“Related to Celeste?”

“I don't know.”

The investigator checked his records.

“There is a Victor Hale listed in the state database.”

“How old?”

“Forty-eight.”

“Occupation?”

“Private contractor.”

I felt a chill.

“Is he Grant's brother?”

“No.”

“Celeste's?”

The investigator looked at the file.

“Yes.”

I sat down again.

Celeste had a brother named Grant.

And another brother named Victor.

The family was larger than I had known.

My mother had been tracking all three.

I thought of Celeste's reaction when I mentioned the blue folder.

She hadn't looked surprised.

She had looked frightened.

That mattered.

The investigator continued through the documents.

A page from my mother listed a date.

The date was one day before her death.

Beside it, she had written:

Victor knows.

No explanation.

No context.

Just those two words.

I closed the notebook.

“What did he know?”

“We need to find him,” the investigator said.

Victor had disappeared.

His company had closed two days after my parents' deaths.

His phone had been disconnected.

His house was empty.

His bank account showed no activity.

But one account had received a payment.

The recipient was Northbridge Holdings.

Daniel Mercer.

Again.

The trail was tightening.

That evening, the investigator obtained security footage from the restaurant near my mother's apartment.

The unidentified man was Victor.

He had met my mother the night before she died.

The footage showed them talking for eleven minutes.

Then Victor left.

My mother stayed.

Two hours later, she received a phone call.

The investigator couldn't identify the caller.

But my mother left the restaurant immediately.

I watched the footage.

There was something about her body language.

She wasn't frightened.

She was determined.

That was my mother.

If she believed someone needed help, fear never stopped her.

I asked for the phone records.

The investigator said they were being requested.

Then Marianne noticed another detail.

Victor had not simply met my mother.

He had followed her afterward.

The footage showed his car several streets behind hers.

I felt sick.

“What happened next?”

“We're still reconstructing it.”

“Can you find his car?”

“We're trying.”

The next morning, we received another piece.

A traffic camera had captured Victor's vehicle near my father's office.

The timestamp was four hours before the attack.

He had been there.

So had Grant.

And Daniel Mercer.

Three men.

One location.

Four hours before my parents died.

The investigator placed the photographs side by side.

“This is no longer circumstantial in isolation.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means the timeline is becoming difficult to explain away.”

I looked at the images.

Grant.

Mercer.

Victor.

Then I remembered Celeste.

“Where was she?”

The investigator looked at me.

“We don't know.”

That answer stayed with me.

Because there was one thing I had learned from my father.

When a record is missing, the absence itself can matter.

Marianne returned to the archive.

She searched the final cabinet.

Then she stopped.

“Nora.”

I joined her.

She was holding a small envelope.

Inside was a photograph of Celeste.

She was standing with Victor and Grant.

The photograph had been taken years earlier.

On the back, my grandfather had written:

All three know about the trust.

I stared at the words.

Marianne whispered:

“They knew about you long before you knew about them.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: The Family Secret Was Older Than My Parents’ Deaths, and One
