7 – The Family Secret Was Older Than My Parents’ Deaths, and One Missing Conversation Finally Explained Why Celeste Wanted Me Gone

For the first time, I understood why my grandfather had been so careful.

The danger hadn't started when my parents died.

It had started years earlier.

The trust had been created because my grandfather knew his own family couldn't be trusted with everything he had built.

Grant, Victor, and Celeste had known about the trust.

My father had known.

My mother had eventually discovered it.

And I had been the only person left outside the circle.

That realization hurt more than I expected.

Not because I wanted to know every family secret.

Because my father had spent years protecting me without ever explaining why.

I asked Marianne whether he had left any personal letters.

She said there were several.

We found them in a box marked private.

The first was addressed to my mother.

The second was addressed to me.

I opened mine.

My father wrote that he wanted me to have an ordinary childhood.

He said he had watched people become obsessed with money.

He didn't want me to grow up believing wealth was the same thing as security.

Then he explained the trust.

He wanted the property to become mine only when I was old enough to understand that ownership came with responsibility.

He had planned to tell me everything after my twenty-first birthday.

But something had changed.

He wrote that Grant had begun asking questions.

Victor had started appearing unexpectedly.

Celeste had become increasingly interested in financial records.

And my father had become afraid.

I read the letter twice.

The final paragraph was unfinished.

It ended:

If I don't get the chance to tell you—

Nothing after that.

The sentence stopped.

I lowered the page.

Marianne looked away.

I didn't cry.

Not then.

I had cried enough.

The investigator entered with another file.

“We found Victor.”

I stood.

“Where?”

“An airport.”

“Is he arrested?”

“Not yet.”

“Where is he going?”

“We're not certain.”

He placed a photograph on the table.

Victor was carrying a suitcase.

He looked older than in the photograph.

Tired.

But unmistakably the same man.

“He's cooperating,” the investigator said.

“Why?”

“Because he contacted us first.”

I frowned.

“What did he say?”

“He wants protection.”

“From whom?”

“He hasn't said.”

The investigator paused.

“But he agreed to talk.”

The interview happened that afternoon.

Victor sat across from me with his hands folded.

He looked at me for a long time.

“You look like your mother.”

I said nothing.

He swallowed.

“I know what you think.”

“I don't know enough to think anything.”

That surprised him.

He nodded.

“Fair.”

The investigator sat nearby.

Marianne was present.

Victor began.

Grant had been trying to obtain control of family properties for years.

He had accumulated debts.

Serious ones.

He borrowed against assets he didn't own, then moved money through companies controlled by Mercer.

Victor had helped him occasionally.

Not because he wanted the properties.

Because he owed Grant money.

Celeste had known.

But Victor insisted she wasn't involved in the financial scheme.

“She knew what Grant was doing,” he said.

“Did she help him?”

“Sometimes.”

“Did she know about the trust?”

“Yes.”

“Did she know I was the beneficiary?”

“Yes.”

My hands tightened.

“Then why did she throw me out?”

Victor looked down.

“Because she believed you would discover the records.”

“What records?”

“The ones your father found.”

“About Grant?”

“About all of them.”

“All three?”

Victor nodded.

He explained that my father had discovered payments moving between Grant, Mercer, and several other people.

One account had eventually paid for the fraudulent loan.

Another had paid Victor.

Another had paid someone who supplied false identification.

But there was something else.

A payment had been made to a private contractor.

The same contractor who had been connected to the attack.

“Who?”

Victor hesitated.

“Elias Ward.”

I looked at Marianne.

She already knew.

“Why would Ward take money from Grant?”

Victor shook his head.

“I don't know.”

“Did he arrange the attack?”

“I don't know.”

“You were there.”

“Yes.”

“The day they died.”

“Yes.”

“Tell me what happened.”

Victor closed his eyes.

He said Grant had arranged a meeting with my father.

Mercer was there.

Victor was there.

They demanded that my father sign documents transferring control of several properties.

My father refused.

My mother arrived unexpectedly.

She had copies of the financial records.

She threatened to take them to the authorities.

Grant became furious.

Victor said he left.

“I didn't see what happened after that.”

“Why should I believe you?”

“You shouldn't.”

His answer surprised me.

He looked at the investigator.

“That's why I brought evidence.”

He handed over a small memory card.

The investigator examined it.

“What is this?”

“Audio.”

“From where?”

“Grant's office.”

Victor had recorded conversations.

Not everything.

But enough.

The first recording contained Grant and Mercer discussing the trust.

The second mentioned my father.

The third mentioned Celeste.

Then came the fourth.

I heard Grant's voice.

“She can't know until the papers are transferred.”

Mercer replied.

“She doesn't even know what's hers.”

Grant said:

“Then keep it that way.”

My breathing slowed.

The recording continued.

Celeste's voice appeared.

“What happens if she asks?”

Grant answered.

“She won't.”

Celeste said something I couldn't make out.

Then Grant said:

“If she comes back, we deal with it.”

The recording ended.

I sat perfectly still.

Marianne reached for my hand.

I pulled it back.

Not because I didn't want comfort.

Because I was afraid that if someone touched me, everything I had been holding inside would break.

The investigator asked Victor about the final recording.

“Did you record the night of the murders?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“I wasn't there.”

“You left before the attack?”

“Yes.”

“Where did you go?”

Victor gave an address.

It could be verified.

His story was becoming more credible.

But one question remained.

“Why did you disappear?”

Victor looked at me.

“Because Grant threatened me.”

“When?”

“After the funerals.”

“What did he say?”

“That if I talked, I would be next.”

I believed he had been afraid.

I did not know whether fear made him innocent.

But his evidence mattered.

The investigator took the memory card.

Victor then gave us another piece.

A photograph.

It showed Ward meeting Grant.

The meeting happened on the night before the attack.

Ward handed Grant a small envelope.

The timestamp was visible.

I stared at it.

“What was in the envelope?”

Victor didn't know.

But he knew where Grant had taken it.

Back to the house.

The house.

Everything returned there.

The study.

The blue folder.

The trust.

The key.

The archive.

I suddenly remembered something.

When Blake threw my suitcase down the steps, he had shouted that I had no business looking through Dad's things.

At the time, I thought it was anger.

Now I wondered how much he knew.

I asked the investigator to question him.

Blake initially denied knowing anything.

Then the investigator showed him the video.

Blake watched himself laughing while I collected my mother's ashes.

His expression changed.

He admitted he had been told to film me.

“Who told you?”

He looked down.

“Celeste.”

“Why?”

“She said she needed proof that you were unstable.”

My stomach turned.

“Why?”

“So they could challenge your claim to the property.”

I stared at him.

“Did you know about the fake documents?”

“No.”

“Did you know about Grant's loans?”

“No.”

“Did you know about my parents?”

He went silent.

The investigator leaned forward.

“Answer.”

Blake swallowed.

“Grant told me not to ask questions.”

That wasn't enough.

But it was another piece.

After the interview, I returned to the archive alone.

I stood before the cabinet where my grandfather had kept the photograph.

The brass key was still in my pocket.

I held it tightly.

I finally understood its purpose.

It had opened the room.

But the room hadn't contained the final answer.

It had contained instructions.

My grandfather hadn't expected the key to solve everything.

He had expected it to lead me to the truth.

And the truth was now pointing somewhere I hadn't considered.

The person who knew exactly where the records were hidden was my father.

The person who had been with my mother before her death was Victor.

The person who had demanded the property was Grant.

The person who had known about the trust was Celeste.

And the person who had paid Ward was still somewhere between all four stories.

The investigator entered.

“We found something in Ward's records.”

“What?”

“A payment made to an account belonging to Celeste.”

I stared at him.

“How much?”

“Enough to matter.”

“When?”

“The day after your parents died.”

The room seemed to tilt.

Celeste had always said she wanted nothing but stability.

Now there was a payment.

From the man connected to the attack.

To her.

The investigator continued.

“But there's a problem.”

“What?”

“The payment was not sent by Grant.”

“Then who?”

He looked at me.

“Your father.”
