8 – My Father’s Final Payment Made No Sense Until We Found the Missing Page, and Then the Person He Had Been Protecting Became Clear

I stared at the investigator.

“My father paid Celeste?”

“That is what the bank record says.”

“That can't be right.”

Marianne picked up the document.

The account number was correct.

The transfer was genuine.

The payment had been made the morning before my parents died.

I looked at the date.

Not after.

Before.

That changed everything.

“What was the amount?”

The investigator told me.

It was large.

Far too large to be ordinary household money.

“Why would Dad pay her?”

“We don't know.”

“Could it have been blackmail?”

“Possible.”

“Could it have been protection?”

“Also possible.”

I looked at Marianne.

She was reading the transaction history.

“There are two transfers.”

She pointed.

“One from your father's business account.”

“One from Celeste's?”

“No.”

“The second transfer went to Ward.”

My chest tightened.

“Same day?”

“Yes.”

I looked at the three names.

My father.

Celeste.

Ward.

The money moved in a chain.

But why?

We searched the archive again.

Every ledger.

Every letter.

Every note.

Nothing explained it.

Then Marianne found a missing page.

It had been torn from my father's notebook.

Only the bottom edge remained.

Three words were still visible.

Protect her from—

The rest was gone.

I stared at the fragment.

“Who was he protecting?”

Marianne didn't answer.

The investigator photographed it.

“We may be able to recover the missing page from the original notebook.”

“How?”

“Forensic examination.”

We sent it away.

While we waited, Victor called.

He wanted to meet again.

This time, he brought a photograph.

It showed my father standing outside a hospital.

Beside him was a woman.

I recognized her immediately.

Celeste.

“What were they doing there?”

Victor said, “That photograph was taken three months before your parents died.”

“Why was Celeste at a hospital with my father?”

Victor looked at me.

“Because she had been receiving treatment.”

I frowned.

“For what?”

He shook his head.

“I don't know.”

I asked the investigator whether there were medical records.

He said they could not simply obtain private medical information without proper legal grounds.

So we left it alone.

What mattered was the relationship.

Celeste and my father had been meeting privately.

Not necessarily because they were involved romantically.

Not necessarily because they were plotting.

But because something had been happening that I had never known about.

I remembered my mother's behavior during the last year of her life.

She had once told me:

“Some truths are safer when you understand the timing.”

At the time, I had laughed.

Now I wondered whether she had been warning me.

The forensic report arrived two days later.

The missing page had been recovered from another document.

It had been folded into the back of a separate notebook.

The investigator read it aloud.

My father had written that Celeste had discovered something about Grant and Victor.

She had threatened to leave them.

She had also threatened to go to the police.

My father believed she was frightened.

He had arranged money for her.

Not to buy her silence.

To help her leave.

I sat back.

“So Dad was protecting Celeste.”

“Yes.”

“From Grant?”

“Apparently.”

Then came the sentence that changed the entire picture.

My father wrote that Celeste had given him information proving Grant had arranged fraudulent transfers.

She had agreed to testify if something happened.

The money had been emergency protection.

The payment to Ward had been for security.

My father had hired Ward to protect Celeste.

I closed my eyes.

That meant Celeste wasn't simply the woman who had thrown me out.

She had been afraid.

But fear didn't erase what she had done.

She had still expelled me.

She had still helped conceal the trust.

She had still participated in the property deception.

The investigator explained that the evidence now suggested Celeste had been caught between Grant and my parents.

“Does that mean she wasn't involved in the murders?”

“We don't know.”

“But she knew they were in danger.”

“Yes.”

That distinction mattered.

The next day, Celeste asked to speak with me.

I agreed.

We met in a small room at Marianne's office.

She looked exhausted.

Without the expensive clothes and composed expression, she seemed smaller.

“I know what you found,” she said.

“You knew Dad was investigating Grant.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about the trust.”

“Yes.”

“You knew he was trying to protect you.”

She looked down.

“Yes.”

“Then why did you throw me out?”

Her eyes filled.

“Because I was terrified.”

“That doesn't answer the question.”

“I thought Grant would hurt you.”

“You threw me into the street.”

“I thought if you disappeared, he would stop looking at you.”

I stared at her.

“You should have told me.”

“I know.”

“You should have called the police.”

“I know.”

“You should have protected me.”

She closed her eyes.

“I know.”

Her voice broke.

“But I had already lost control of everything.”

I didn't forgive her.

Not then.

But I understood something.

People could be victims and still cause harm.

Fear could explain a choice without excusing it.

I asked her about Ward.

“He was hired by your father.”

“I know.”

“Did you know about the payment?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know Ward met Grant?”

She hesitated.

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell anyone?”

“Because Ward told me he was handling it.”

“Handling what?”

She looked at me.

“The threat.”

“What threat?”

She finally said the words.

“Grant had hired someone to follow your mother.”

My hands went cold.

“Why?”

“She had the records.”

“What records?”

“Proof that Grant and Victor had been moving money through Northbridge.”

I looked at her.

“And Mercer?”

“Mercer was the broker.”

“And Grant?”

“He was the organizer.”

“And Victor?”

“Victor helped them.”

“Did you?”

She shook her head.

“Not at first.”

I waited.

“Later?”

She looked away.

“I signed documents.”

“What documents?”

“Some transfers.”

My anger returned.

“You helped them.”

“I did.”

“Why?”

“Because they threatened me.”

“With what?”

“Your father.”

I didn't understand.

“They said if I spoke, they would make it look like your father had committed financial crimes.”

I thought about the fake loan applications.

The false signatures.

The shell companies.

They had been building a case against my father while stealing from him.

Celeste had been trapped inside it.

But she had still made choices.

I asked the question that mattered most.

“Who killed my parents?”

Celeste began crying.

“I don't know.”

“Do you know who ordered it?”

“No.”

“Do you suspect someone?”

She looked at me.

“Grant.”

The investigator entered.

He had been listening from the adjoining room.

“Why?”

Celeste wiped her face.

“Because the night before they died, Grant told me something.”

“What?”

“He said your father had one last chance to sign.”

“Sign what?”

“The transfer documents.”

“And if he refused?”

She whispered:

“Then the problem would disappear.”

Silence filled the room.

The investigator asked her to repeat the exact words.

She did.

That statement became part of the record.

But it still wasn't enough.

We needed proof that Grant had ordered the attack.

The answer came from an unexpected source.

Blake.

He contacted the investigator that evening.

He had found an old message on a cloud account.

It had been sent from Grant's phone the night before the murders.

The message contained only an address and a time.

The address was the same location where my parents had been attacked.

The time was forty minutes before the attack.

Beneath it was a second message.

Make sure it ends tonight.

The sender was Grant.

The recipient was Victor.

Victor had told us he left before the attack.

Now investigators had evidence that he had received the instruction.

Victor was brought back for questioning.

He admitted receiving the message.

But he insisted he never carried it out.

“I left because I knew what Grant meant.”

“Why didn't you warn them?”

Victor looked at the table.

“I was afraid.”

The investigator pushed the message across.

“You could have saved them.”

“I know.”

That sentence stayed with me.

Because there were several people who could have done something.

My father.

My mother.

Celeste.

Victor.

Ward.

Me.

But fear had kept everyone silent in different ways.

I returned to the house after the interview.

The sheriff had completed the possession process.

Celeste had moved out.

Grant was being held for the financial investigation.

The property was finally quiet.

I walked through the front door.

The same hallway.

The same staircase.

The same study.

I opened the curtains.

Morning light entered the room.

My father's desk stood exactly where it had been.

I touched the surface.

Then I noticed something beneath the drawer.

A tiny brass plate.

It had the same number as my key.

I removed the drawer.

Behind it was a final envelope.

My father's handwriting appeared on the front.

For Nora, when the house is finally yours.

My hands began shaking.

I opened it.

Inside was a single letter.

He told me that the house had never been the most important thing.

He had left it to me because it represented the family history.

But he wanted me to understand that inheritance wasn't revenge.

He asked me to use the property to build something that belonged to me rather than becoming trapped by what had happened there.

Then came his final line.

If you are reading this, then you found the truth. Now decide what you will do with it.

I sat in his chair.

For the first time since the funeral, I allowed myself to cry.

Not because I had lost the house.

Because I had finally found my father.

And I understood what the brass key had really unlocked.

Not a secret room.

Not a fortune.

A choice.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: The House Was Finally Mine, Yet the Truth Waiting in My Father’s Last Records Forced Me to Choose What Justice Would Actually Mean

I stared at the investigator. “My father paid Celeste?” “That is what the bank record says.” “That can't be right.” Marianne picked up the document.
