We have Celeste's statement. We have the financial transfers. We have evidence that Grant wanted your father to sign the property documents.”

“But you still need the connection between him and the people who carried out the attack.”

“Yes.”

I nodded.

I had learned not to confuse suspicion with proof.

That distinction had already cost my family everything.

The investigator placed several photographs on the table.

One showed Grant meeting Daniel Mercer.

Another showed Victor receiving the message.

A third showed Elias Ward outside the property.

Then he placed a fourth photograph beside them.

It showed someone I didn't recognize.

“Who is that?”

“A driver.”

“Whose driver?”

“That's what we're determining.”

The photograph had been taken near the location of the attack.

The man had been standing beside a dark sedan.

I stared at the license plate.

Something about it bothered me.

“Wait.”

I reached for the photograph.

“The car.”

“What about it?”

“I've seen it.”

Marianne looked at me.

“Where?”

“At the house.”

I remembered the night my parents died.

There had been a dark sedan parked across the street.

I had thought it belonged to a neighbor.

But Blake had mentioned seeing someone arrive before the police.

I searched my phone.

There was an old photograph from the funeral.

I had taken it without thinking.

The sedan was visible behind the cemetery gate.

Same vehicle.

The investigator took the phone.

“Can I send this to our forensic team?”

“Yes.”

He did.

Within minutes, the vehicle registration came back.

It belonged to a company connected to Daniel Mercer.

The investigator leaned back.

“That closes another gap.”

I looked at the photograph again.

The truth was no longer scattered.

It was beginning to form a line.

Grant had the motive.

Mercer had the financial connection.

Victor had the message.

Ward had been paid for security.

Celeste had information.

And the driver had connected Mercer to the location.

But one question remained.

Who had actually pulled the trigger?

The investigator said they were close.

Then he received a call.

He listened for less than a minute.

His expression changed.

“That's him.”

“Who?”

“The driver.”

He stood.

“He was arrested two years ago under another name.”

“For what?”

“Armed robbery.”

“Does he have a connection to Grant?”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“He worked for a private security contractor.”

I looked at the investigator.

“Ward?”

He nodded.

The room became silent.

Ward had not simply been protecting Celeste.

He had employees.

One of them had been present at the attack.

That changed the meaning of the payment.

I asked whether Ward knew.

“We don't know yet.”

“What happens to him?”

“He'll be questioned again.”

Marianne looked at me.

“You need to prepare yourself.”

“For what?”

“For the possibility that people you thought were protecting you were involved in the opposite.”

I understood.

My father's final payment to Ward had been intended to protect Celeste.

But money could move between people for different reasons.

A security company could provide protection.

Its employee could take another job privately.

And someone could exploit that relationship.

Nothing was simple anymore.

That afternoon, I went upstairs.

My mother's old room had remained untouched.

Celeste had apparently never bothered to use it.

A scarf still hung over the back of a chair.

A small perfume bottle stood beside the mirror.

I picked it up.

The scent was faint.

For a moment, I was twenty years old again, sitting on my mother's bed while she brushed my hair before a school ceremony.

I placed the bottle back.

Then I noticed a small envelope beneath the drawer.

My mother's handwriting was on it.

Nora.

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph of the three of us.

My father.

My mother.

Me.

On the back, she had written:

When everything becomes complicated, remember what was simple.

Love.

I held the photograph against my chest.

Then I found another note.

This one was not addressed to me.

It was addressed to my father.

I read it.

She told him she was afraid.

Not of Grant.

Not of Mercer.

Of what would happen if the truth became public.

She wrote that she believed Celeste was telling the truth about wanting to leave.

But she didn't trust Victor.

Then she wrote something that stopped me.

Watch Ward.

I sat down.

My mother had suspected him.

She had known something was wrong.

And my father had still hired him.

Maybe because he believed Ward was the only person who could protect Celeste.

Maybe because he didn't know.

Maybe because he had been desperate.

I took the letter downstairs.

The investigator read it.

“This matters.”

“Because she suspected Ward?”

“Yes.”

“Does it make him guilty?”

“No.”

I nodded.

I was beginning to understand that evidence could point toward someone without proving what I wanted it to prove.

The next morning, Ward agreed to speak.

He arrived with an attorney.

His face was calm.

Too calm.

The investigator asked about the payment.

Ward admitted receiving it.

“Your father hired us to protect Celeste.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know know Victor?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know the driver?”

Ward hesitated.

“Yes.”

The investigator placed the photograph on the table.

“Was he working for you?”

“At the time, yes.”

“Was he assigned to the location where your client's parents were killed?”

Ward looked at his attorney.

Then back at the investigator.

“No.”

The investigator placed another document down.

The driver's phone records.

There had been a call to Ward forty minutes before the attack.

Ward's face changed.

“I didn't know what he was doing.”

“Why did he call you?”

“I don't know.”

“Did you speak to him?”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

“He said the job was done.”

I felt cold.

“What job?”

Ward looked at me.

“I thought he meant surveillance.”

The investigator leaned forward.

“Did you ask?”

“No.”

That answer sounded weak.

But weakness wasn't guilt.

The investigator continued.

“Did you authorize an attack?”

“No.”

“Did Grant ever ask you to arrange one?”

Ward said nothing.

His attorney intervened.

“My client will not answer without a formal agreement.”

The interview ended.

Outside, I stood beneath the courthouse steps.

The investigator joined me.

“Do you think Ward did it?”

“I don't know.”

“That is the right answer.”

I looked at him.

“Are we going to know?”

“Yes.”

He paused.

“Because the driver has started talking.”

My heart beat faster.

“What did he say?”

“He says Grant gave the order.”

The wind moved through the trees.

“Did he say Mercer was involved?”

“Yes.”

“Victor?”

“He says Victor was present earlier but left.”

“And Ward?”

“He says Ward didn't give the order.”

I closed my eyes.

One piece of the mystery had finally separated itself from the others.

Grant had arranged it.

Mercer had helped.

Victor had known.

Ward had failed to prevent it.

Celeste had known enough to be afraid.

But there was still one thing I needed.

Proof.

The investigator looked at me.

“We may have it.”

He held up his phone.

“The driver kept a recording.”

I stared at him.

“Of what?”

“Grant giving the order.”

For the first time, I felt something close to relief.

Not happiness.

Not victory.

Just the knowledge that my parents would not disappear into an unsolved story.

I looked back at the house.

It was still quiet.

But the silence felt different now.

My parents were no longer only memories inside those walls.

Their choices had left evidence.

Their courage had left evidence.

And finally, the people who had tried to bury the truth had left evidence too.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: The Recording Finally Exposed the Order Behind the Attack, But the Last
