I had learned not to celebrate too early. I had learned that a phone call from the agency could mean progress, another delay, or a question I thought we had already answered.

So when the social worker finally appeared at our front door with eight-year-old Leo beside her, I did not trust myself to believe that he was really staying.

Then she handed me a black plastic garbage bag.

It was knotted at the top and sagging badly on one side. Something inside made a soft scraping sound when she shifted it from one hand to the other.

“This is everything that came with him,” she said.

I stared at the bag.

Everything.

For a child who had spent years moving through other people's homes, that word felt painfully small.

Leo stood beside her with his shoulders pulled slightly forward. His sneakers were worn at the toes, and one shoelace had been replaced with a piece of white cord. He kept his eyes on the floor rather than looking around the house.

Ethan came up behind me and crouched until he was closer to Leo's height.

“Hi, buddy,” he said.

Leo looked at him cautiously.

“We've been waiting a long time to meet you.”

The boy glanced toward the black bag.

“Is this where my stuff goes?”

His voice was so quiet that I almost missed the question.

“You don't have to worry about that,” I said. “We'll find places for everything.”

The social worker checked her phone.

There was no dramatic goodbye. No long speech about the beginning of a new life. She simply handed me the paperwork, reminded us of a few appointments, and said she needed to get back to the office.

Then she left.

The door closed.

Leo remained in the hallway.

For several seconds, none of us moved.

Ethan smiled at him.

“This is your home now.”

Leo's eyes lifted.

“Forever?”

The word landed differently than everything else he had said.

I felt something tighten behind my ribs.

“Yes,” I answered. “Forever.”

He looked at the stairs, then at the bag in my hand.

“Then I can unpack?”

“You absolutely can.”

Ethan offered him his hand.

“First, how about we find something to eat?”

Leo hesitated.

“You like sandwiches?”

“What kind?”

“Any kind.”

That earned the smallest hint of a smile.

“Turkey.”

“Turkey it is.”

They walked toward the kitchen together.

I stayed in the hallway with the garbage bag.

It was absurdly heavy for something that contained so little.

I carried it upstairs.

Leo's bedroom had been ready for weeks. We had bought a bed with drawers underneath, a small desk near the window, shelves for books, and a blue quilt that Ethan had insisted was the right shade because it made the room feel warm without being childish.

I placed the bag on the mattress.

For a moment, I simply stood there.

I had imagined this scene differently.

I had pictured Leo arriving with a suitcase, maybe a backpack, perhaps a favorite blanket or a collection of toys. Something that belonged to him.

Instead, his entire history seemed tied shut inside a piece of black plastic.

I untied the knot.

Inside were several shirts, two pairs of pants, a sweatshirt with a faded cartoon character across the front, a pair of socks rolled together, an old paperback book, a cracked plastic game controller, and a small stuffed dog with one ear missing.

That was nearly everything.

I lifted the sweatshirt.

A receipt fell from one of the pockets.

I picked it up and set it aside.

Then I emptied the remaining clothes onto the bed.

Something struck the mattress with a dull metallic thud.

I froze.

At first I thought it was another toy.

I moved the shirts aside.

A silver wristwatch lay underneath them.

I recognized it immediately.

My father's watch.

The room seemed to become unnaturally quiet.

I picked it up.

The metal was cold against my palm.

There was a thin scratch beside the clasp, almost invisible unless you knew where to look.

I knew where to look.

I had made that scratch when I was nine years old.

My father had let me play with the watch while he sat at the kitchen table.
