everything.”

“Why?”

“Because some of it came from Daniel.”

“He's dead.”

“I know.”

“And I'm his her.”

I remembered Dad's silences.

His unexplained absences.

His refusal to answer questions about certain relatives.

His habit of saying that some once.”

“When?”

“Years later.”

“Did she recognize him?”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

“She refused to come home.”

“Why?”

“Because she believed your grandfather had chosen his reputation over her.”

I looked down at my hands.

“And Dad?”

“He tried to help.”

“Did he succeed?”

“No.”

“Did he meet her daughter?”

“Yes.”

“Leo's mother?”

“Yes.”

“Did he raise her?”

“No.”

“Then what did he do?”

“He watched from a distance.”

That sounded exactly like my father.

Always near.

Never honest.

Always helping.

Never explaining.

I ended the call.

Ethan had been listening from the doorway.

“Are you okay?”

“No.”

He came closer.

“You don't have to solve all of this today.”

“Yes, I do.”

“Why?”

“Because Leo is living in our house, carrying a watch from a dead man who spent years keeping his family separated.”

Ethan looked at the photograph.

“We need to make sure the secrets don't become his burden.”

I nodded.

That was the first thing that felt clear.

Whatever my father had done, Leo had not chosen it.

That evening, I sat on the edge of Leo's bed.

He was reading the old paperback from the black bag.

“Can I ask you something?”

He looked up.

“About Daniel?”

“Yes.”

He closed the book.

“What do you want to know?”

“Did Daniel ever talk about another Rachel?”

Leo frowned.

“Which one?”

The question stopped me.

“You know there were two?”

He nodded.

“Daniel told me.”

“What did he say?”

“He said one Rachel was my mom.”

“And the other?”

“My grandma.”

I felt a chill.

“Did you ever meet your grandmother?”

Leo shook his head.

“No.”

“Did Daniel know her?”

“He said he did.”

“Did he tell you where she was?”

“No.”

“Did he say she was alive?”

Leo looked down.

“He didn't know.”

I sat beside him.

“Did he ever say why he kept secrets?”

“He said secrets could hurt people.”

“And truth?”

Leo thought about it.

“He said truth can hurt too.”

I smiled sadly.

“That sounds like him.”

Leo closed the book.

“Are you going to find my grandma?”

“I don't know.”

“Will you?”

I looked at him.

“Yes.”

The answer came before I could reconsider it.

“I'll try.”

He nodded.

Then he reached beneath his pillow.

“I have something else.”

He handed me a small envelope.

My pulse quickened.

“Where did you get this?”

“Daniel gave it to me.”

“When?”

“Before I came here.”

I opened it.

Inside was a key.

A small brass key.

And a piece of paper.

There was an address.

I recognized it.

It was the address of my father's old storage unit.

I looked at Leo.

“Did Daniel tell you what this opens?”

Leo shook his head.

“He said you would know.”

I stared at the key.

My father had left me another door.

And this time, I was going to
