I stopped looking for names and started looking for dates.

Rachel had died two years earlier.

Daniel had died only months after her.

If he had known she was dying, there had to be medical records, letters, or some other evidence.

Near the bottom of a box marked OLD FAMILY, I found a manila envelope.

Inside were medical appointment cards.

None carried a diagnosis.

Then I found a letter from a clinic.

The letter was addressed to Rachel.

It thanked her for attending an appointment and instructed her to return for further testing.

The date was almost four years earlier.

I kept digging.

Another letter.

Then another.

Finally, I found a folded page written by my father.

“Do not let Sophie learn this from anyone else.”

I stopped.

The next sentence was crossed out.

Underneath, he had written:

“She deserves to hear it from me, but I may not have the courage.”

I read the page several times.

My father had known Rachel was seriously ill.

He had known before he ever approached me about adoption.

And he had made a decision.

He would not tell me.

Not yet.

I hated him for that.

Then I found a second note.

“Her condition is worsening. She has asked me to promise that Leo will not be told until he has a permanent home.”

My fingers tightened around the paper.

There it was.

The reason for the silence.

Rachel had asked my father to protect Leo from the knowledge that his mother was dying.

But there was another sentence beneath it.

“She wants Sophie to become his mother if possible.”

I sat on the concrete floor.

For several minutes I could not move.

She had chosen me.

Not because of blood.

Not because my father had forced the decision.

Because she had heard about the woman her brother's daughter had become.

She had heard that Ethan and I wanted a child.

And she had decided that if she could not raise Leo, she wanted him with us.

I thought of the first time I had spoken to him.

The plastic blocks.

The unfinished roof.

My father's hand on my elbow.

“What about him?”

He had known.

He had known everything.

But the agency had still allowed us to choose.

Maybe that was the cruelest kindness of all.

The choice had been mine.

The information had not.

I brought the papers home.

Ethan read them at the kitchen table.

“So Rachel knew.”

“Yes.”

“And your father knew.”

“Yes.”

“And he never told you because he promised her.”

“Yes.”

Ethan looked at the page.

“She was trying to protect Leo.”

“I know.”

“And your father was trying to honor that.”

“I know.”

“But you still have a right to be angry.”

I looked at him.

“That is the problem.”

“What?”

“I don't know whether I'm angry because he lied, or because he was right that I would have said yes anyway.”

Ethan reached across the table.

“You don't have to choose between those feelings.”

I nodded.

The front door opened.

Leo came inside carrying his backpack.

He had spent the morning with Ethan.

He looked at us.

“What happened?”

I folded the papers.

“Nothing you need to worry about.”

He watched me.

“You're doing the face.”

“What face?”

“The face you make when you're worried but don't want me to know.”

Ethan smiled faintly.

“He's observant.”

Leo put his backpack down.

“Did you find something about Mom?”

I hesitated.

“Yes.”

His expression changed.

“What?”

I pulled out a chair.

“Sit with me.”

He did.

I chose my words carefully.

“Your mother was sick.”

Leo's face became still.

“How sick?”

“Very sick.”

“Was that why she couldn't keep me?”

“Yes.”

“Did she know she was going to die?”

I nodded.

He looked down.

“Did Daniel know?”

“Yes.”

“Did you?”

“Not until now.”

He swallowed.

“Did Mom know about you?”

“Yes.”

“Did she want me to come here?”

I looked into his eyes.

“Yes.”

He was quiet.

“Why?”

“She believed you needed a family who would stay.”

Leo looked at his hands.

“Did she know you?”

“Not personally.”

“But she chose you.”

“Yes.”

He thought for a long time.

Then he asked:

“Did she love me?”

I didn't answer immediately.

Instead, I took his hand.

“She loved you enough to think about where you would be safe after she was gone.”

His eyes filled.

“That's love.”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

He didn't cry.

Neither did I.

We sat together until the silence stopped feeling frightening.

Later that evening, I played the recording for Leo.

Not the entire thing.

Only the section where Daniel spoke about Rachel wanting him to have a permanent home.

Leo listened.

When it ended, he looked at the floor.

“Daniel kept his promise.”

“Yes.”

“But he lied to you.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he was afraid the truth would change your future.”

Leo looked at me.

“Did it?”

“No.”

He smiled faintly.

“I think it made it.”

That night, I went back to the storage unit one final time.

There was one box I had avoided.

It was labeled with my name.

Inside was a stack of envelopes.

The first was dated six months before the adoption.

The second was dated one month before.

The third was dated the week Leo came to our house.

None had been sent.

I opened the first.

My father's letter began:

“Sophie, if you're reading this, I failed to tell you the truth while I was alive.”

The rest explained what I already knew.

Rachel was dying.

Leo needed a family.

My father believed I would love him.

But the final paragraph was different.

“Do not mistake my silence for confidence. I was terrified you would discover the truth and decide that loving him was something you owed me.”

I stopped reading.

The next line made my throat tighten.

“You owe me nothing.”

That was the first thing my father had ever written that felt completely honest.

I opened the second letter.

“Michael knows the truth about his son. He will have to decide whether to become the father Leo deserves. I cannot make that decision for him.”

The third letter was shorter.

“Tomorrow, Leo goes to Sophie.”

Tomorrow.

That was the day he arrived.

My father had known.

He had written the letter the night before.

At the bottom, there was one final sentence.

“If Sophie gives him a home, then my last mistake will have become my first good thing.”

I closed my eyes.

For the first time, I cried.

Not because I forgave him.

Not because everything was suddenly fine.

Because I finally understood the shape of what he had tried to do.

He had spent his life believing secrets could repair damage.

They couldn't.

But his final attempt had at least led Leo to us.

And now we had to decide what came next.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: Michael Had Been Given a Choice My Father Could Not Make for Him, and Leo’s Question Forced Both of Us to Face What Fatherhood Really Meant

I played the recording again.
