concrete, and old cardboard.

Ethan parked beside the row of metal doors.

I checked the address twice.

Unit 214.

The key fit.

The lock clicked.

For several seconds, neither of us moved.

Then Ethan pulled the door upward.

The metal rattled loudly.

Inside were shelves stacked with boxes.

Some were labeled.

Most weren't.

My father's handwriting appeared on several.

I stepped inside.

There was a strange familiarity to the room.

Not because I had ever been there.

Because everything inside belonged to the man I thought I knew.

His old desk lamp.

A broken typewriter.

Boxes of photographs.

A suitcase.

A wooden chair.

And against the back wall, a small metal filing cabinet.

I opened the first drawer.

Nothing.

The second contained newspaper clippings.

The third was locked.

I held up the brass key.

Ethan looked at me.

“That's probably it.”

The key turned.

Inside were envelopes.

Dozens of them.

Each carried a date.

Some were addressed to Rachel.

Others to Daniel himself.

I picked up the oldest.

The handwriting wasn't Dad's.

It belonged to my grandfather.

I opened it.

The letter was short.

It mentioned his daughter.

It mentioned shame.

And it ended with a sentence that made my stomach tighten.

“If she returns, do not bring her back into this house.”

I folded the letter.

My father had grown up inside that command.

He had inherited a family rule before he was old enough to question it.

But there was more.

The next envelope contained a letter from my father to his sister.

He wrote that he had searched for her.

That he regretted not protecting her.

That he wanted her to know he had never believed she deserved what their father had done.

There was no answer.

The next letter was dated seven years later.

Then another.

Then another.

None had been sent.

They had all been kept.

“Why would he write letters and never send them?”

Ethan asked.

“Maybe he didn't know where she was.”

“Then how did he find her later?”

I looked through the papers.

A receipt fell onto the floor.

It was from a private investigator.

The date was twenty-six years earlier.

My father had hired someone to find Rachel.

I read the report.

The investigator had located her.

She was living in another state.

She had a daughter.

The daughter's name was Rachel.

My hands tightened around the page.

“That's Leo's mother.”

Ethan nodded.

The report contained an address.

Then a second page.

It said my father had visited the address.

He had spoken with his sister.

She had refused to return.

But she had allowed him to meet her daughter.

Leo's mother.

I read the next line.

“She asked that her daughter never be told about the Vance family.”

I stopped.

“That explains the secrecy.”

Ethan shook his head.

“Does it?”

“No.”

Because the report continued.

“Daniel agreed.”

My father had promised his sister.

But years later, he had broken that promise.

He had begun visiting Leo's mother.

Then Leo.

He had crossed the boundary he had promised not to cross.

Why?

I kept reading.

The final page contained a handwritten note from Dad.

“She has changed her mind.”

I stared at it.

“Who?”

Ethan read over my shoulder.

“Rachel.”

“The older Rachel.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Three years before Dad died.”

The same period when we began discussing adoption.

My pulse quickened.

Dad hadn't simply discovered Leo.

He had been preparing for something.

I searched the remaining boxes.

One contained photographs.

I found several of Leo's mother.

She was older than in the hospital photograph.

There were photographs of her with Leo.

At a park.

At a school event.

Outside a grocery store.

My father had taken them.

Then I found one that made me stop.

Leo was about five years old.

He was sitting beside an elderly woman.

Her face was turned partly away.

But I recognized the eyes.

The woman from the old family photograph.

Rachel.

My father's sister.

Alive.

I nearly dropped the photograph.

“She's alive.”

Ethan took it.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“When was this taken?”

There was a date written on the back.

Four years ago.

One year before my father died.

I sat down on the concrete floor.

“She was alive.”

“And Dad knew.”

“Yes.”

“Do you know where she was?”

I turned the photograph over.

Nothing.

But another photograph had fallen behind it.

This one showed the same woman standing beside a building.

The address was visible.

I read it.

A small assisted-living residence.

I looked at Ethan.

“We found her.”

We drove there that afternoon.

The receptionist checked the name.

Then her expression changed.

“She lived here.”

“Does she still?”

The woman looked at the screen.

“No.”

“Where did she go?”

“She passed away.”

My chest tightened.

“When?”

“Two years ago.”

I closed my eyes.

Two years.

My father died almost two years ago.

They had died within months of each other.

“Did she have family?”

The receptionist hesitated.

“She had visitors.”

“Who?”

“I can't discuss residents.”

I showed her the photograph.

“Please.”

She looked at it.

Then she looked at me.

“You look like her.”

I couldn't speak.

The receptionist lowered her voice.

“She had a nephew who visited sometimes.”

“Daniel?”

“Yes.”

My heart sank.

“Did anyone else visit?”

“A young woman.”

“Rachel?”

The receptionist nodded.

“She came with a little boy.”

Leo.

I gripped the photograph.

“Did they know she was his grandmother?”

“I don't know.”

“Did she know?”

The receptionist looked uncomfortable.

“I believe so.”

We left with nothing except confirmation.

But outside, I noticed an envelope tucked beneath the windshield wiper.

There was no stamp.

No name.

Just my father's handwriting.

My hands began shaking.

I opened it.

Inside was one sentence.

“If you found the storage unit, you are finally ready to know why I chose Leo.”

I read it twice.

Then I turned the page.

There was another sentence.

“Do not ask what I did for him. Ask what I failed to do for his mother.”

I felt tears rise.

My father wasn't defending himself.

He was confessing.

But the confession wasn't there.

Instead, there was an address.

A cemetery.

Rachel's grave.

And beneath it:

“Bring Leo.”

I stared at Ethan.

“He wanted me to take Leo there.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

We drove home before sunset.

Leo was sitting at the kitchen table drawing.

When he saw my face, he stopped.

“Did you find her?”

I sat beside him.

“I found where she is buried.”

He looked down.

“My grandma?”

“Yes.”

He was quiet.

Then he asked:

“Did Daniel know?”

“Yes.”

“Did he visit her?”

“Yes.”

Leo nodded.

“Then he kept his promise.”

“What promise?”

“He said he would make sure I wasn't alone.”

I looked at him.

“Did he tell you anything else?”

Leo reached into his pocket.

He pulled out the silver watch.

“He said you would understand when you saw the grave.”

I stared at it.

For the first time, I wondered whether the watch had never been meant to reveal the past.

Maybe it had been meant to lead me somewhere.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: At the Cemetery, Leo Finally Learned Why Daniel Had Chosen Silence, and the Gravestone Revealed a Name I Had Never Heard

The storage facility smelled of dust, hot concrete, and old cardboard.
