I helped create the situation by making sure you never had to face it."

He looked away.

Then Chloe appeared at the top of the stairs.

"Logan."

He turned.

"Let me talk to her."

Chloe came down slowly.

She stopped a few feet away.

"You've gone too far, Evelyn."

"I haven't gone far enough."

Her eyes narrowed.

"You think because you own this building, you can control us?"

"I think because I own this building, I can decide whether I continue subsidizing the people living upstairs."

"We're family."

"Family doesn't mean unlimited access to someone else's money."

Her jaw tightened.

"You'll regret treating us like this."

I met her eyes.

"I regret how long I allowed it."

She turned sharply and walked upstairs.

Logan remained behind.

For a moment, he looked like the little boy who used to sit at my kitchen table doing homework.

Then he followed his wife.

I closed the door.

The next morning, my phone rang.

The number belonged to my bank.

I answered immediately.

"Hello?"

"Ms. Beckett? This is Sarah Jenkins from account services."

Her voice was calm, but something in her tone made me sit upright.

"Yes?"

"I'm calling because we received documentation requesting account authorization."

I frowned.

"What kind of authorization?"

"A power-of-attorney form. It would grant your son, Logan Beckett, access to your primary checking and savings accounts."

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"I didn't submit that."

"That's why I'm calling."

She continued carefully.

"The signature appears intended to match yours, but our verification system flagged differences."

I looked toward the office.

"Can you stop the request?"

"Yes. I have placed a hold on it."

"Please preserve the original paperwork."

"We will."

"Do not grant anyone access."

"We won't."

I ended the call.

For several seconds, I didn't move.

Then I walked into my office and closed the door.

My hands were cold.

The restaurant bill had been insulting.

The canceled transfers had been predictable.

But this was different.

Someone had tried to gain legal access to my savings.

And the bank had Logan's name attached to the request.

I opened the binder on my desk.

The first page was a record of every financial favor I had given him.

I stared at it.

I had spent years teaching my son to trust me.

Somehow, I had never taught him that trust came with limits.

Now I needed to find out exactly how far he was willing to go.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: The Bank Had Stopped the Unauthorized Request, but the Documents on My Desk Forced Me to Question What My Son Intended to Take

The next morning, I woke before sunrise.
