At least, not directly.”

I stood beside my car with one hand resting on the roof.

“Then who submitted it?”

“We received it through a local branch. The paperwork names Logan as the person who would receive authority, but the individual who presented it identified herself differently.”

“Who?”

Sarah paused.

“Chloe.”

The name landed harder than I expected.

For several seconds, I watched a delivery truck turn the corner at the end of the street.

“Are you certain?”

“I’m certain about what the branch reported. The person who submitted the paperwork was Chloe. The authorization itself names Logan.”

I closed my eyes.

So Logan had not been the one standing at the bank.

But his name was on the document.

That distinction mattered, though not in the way Sarah seemed to think.

“Did she have identification?”

“Yes.”

“Then why wasn't it accepted?”

“Because your signature didn't match our records, and the authorization contained information that required additional verification.”

I let out a slow breath.

“Can you preserve everything?”

“We already have.”

“Good.”

I thanked her and ended the call.

My train could wait.

I drove directly to the bank.

Sarah met me in a private office and placed a folder on the table.

The first document was the supposed authorization.

The second was a photocopy of my identification.

My stomach tightened.

I had never given Chloe a copy of that document.

The third page contained information about my accounts that I had never discussed with her.

I read it twice.

Then I looked at Sarah.

“How did she get this?”

“We don't know.”

I stared at the pages.

There were only a handful of people who knew enough about my finances to assemble something like this.

And most of them had been sitting around that restaurant table.

“I want copies of everything.”

“You can have copies of the documents you submitted and the security report.”

“Please do.”

Sarah slid another page toward me.

“There is something else.”

I looked down.

“This is a note attached by the branch employee.”

I read it.

Chloe had reportedly insisted that I was elderly, overwhelmed, and unable to manage my finances properly.

She had claimed Logan was trying to protect me.

She had apparently told the bank that I had become confused after the anniversary dinner and that my family was concerned about me.

I looked up.

“So she told them I was incapable.”

Sarah nodded carefully.

“She expressed concern about your ability to manage your accounts.”

A bitter laugh escaped me.

“She has been telling my neighbors the same thing.”

Sarah didn't comment.

She didn't need to.

The pattern was obvious.

First, Chloe tried to make me feel guilty.

Then she tried to isolate me.

Then she tried to convince other people that I was unstable.

Now she had gone to my bank.

She wasn't trying to repair the family.

She was trying to regain access to the resources she had lost.

I signed the necessary security forms.

Before leaving, I changed every password connected to my finances.

I added additional verification to my accounts.

I also instructed the bank to contact me directly before honoring any future authorization request.

When I walked back to my car, the folder felt heavier than it should have.

Not because of the paper.

Because of what it represented.

I drove home.

Logan was waiting in the shared foyer.

He looked as though he had been there for a while.

“Mom.”

I stopped.

“Did Chloe tell you she went to the bank?”

His expression changed.

“What?”

“Answer me.”

He looked toward the stairs.

“She said she was going to talk to them.”

“About what?”

“She said she wanted to explain our situation.”

I held up the folder.

“She tried to obtain access to my accounts.”

His face went pale.

“I didn't know she was doing that.”

“But your name was on the authorization.”

“I didn't sign it.”

I studied him.

“I believe you didn't sign it.”

His shoulders dropped.

“But you knew about it.”

He hesitated.

That was enough.

“You knew.”

“I knew she wanted some kind of access.”

“And you allowed her to use your name.”

“I thought she was trying to fix things.”

“You thought she was trying to fix things by getting control of my savings?”

He rubbed his forehead.

“I was desperate.”

“So was she.”

He looked at me.

“What are you going to do?”

I answered immediately.

“Protect myself.”

He nodded slowly.

I expected him to argue.

Instead, he said, “That's fair.”

Those two words surprised me.

I had spent weeks waiting for another demand.

Another accusation.

Another attempt to make me feel guilty.

Instead, my son looked frightened.

Not of me.

Of what he had helped create.

“Mom,” he said, “there's something else.”

I waited.

“I don't think I know the full extent of our debt.”

“Neither do I.”

“I found another account.”

“What kind?”

“Credit.”

He took out his phone and showed me the screen.

The account had been opened months earlier.

The balance was enormous.

“Was it yours?”

“Technically.”

“Did you authorize it?”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“Then you need to deal with it.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

“Not me.”

“I know.”

“Not my savings.”

“I know.”

He swallowed.

“I need to fix this myself.”

That was the first time I heard responsibility in his voice instead of desperation.

I stepped aside.

“Then start.”

He went upstairs.

I remained in the foyer.

A few minutes later, I heard Chloe's voice.

The argument began quietly.

Then it grew louder.

“You told me you had access!”

“I said Mom had agreed to help!”

“You said you handled it!”

“I didn't know you were going to the bank!”

“You knew we needed the money!”

I stood perfectly still.

The voices stopped.

A door slammed.

Then Logan came downstairs alone.

His eyes were red.

“She lied to me,” he said.

I didn't answer.

“She told me the bank had already approved everything.”

“Did you believe her?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted to.”

That answer hurt more than an excuse would have.

He sat on the bottom step.

“I wanted to believe someone was going to make the problem disappear.”

I looked at him.

“No one can do that for you.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

For the next several days, Logan began gathering every financial document he could find.

The work was ugly.

There were unpaid balances, late notices, subscriptions, loans, and purchases he couldn't remember approving.

Some accounts were legitimate.

Some were not.

Some had been opened using his information without his understanding.

He started making calls.

He canceled what could be canceled.

He disputed what he didn't recognize.

He sold things he didn't need.

The expensive television went first.

Then the second car.

Then several pieces of furniture Chloe had insisted they needed.

Each time something disappeared from upstairs, the house became a little quieter.

One evening, Logan knocked on my kitchen door.

I let him in.

He placed a stack of papers on the table.

“I calculated what we can actually afford.”

“And?”

“We can't stay here.”

I looked at him.

He nodded.

“You were right.”

“I wasn't trying to be right.”

“I know.”

He sat down.

“We need to move.”

I folded my hands.

“Then make a plan.”

“I will.”

He looked toward the ceiling.

“Chloe won't like it.”

“That is no longer something I can solve.”

He nodded.

Then he said, “I'm sorry, Mom.”

This time, I believed he meant it.

Not because everything was fixed.

Because he wasn't asking me for anything.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Four-Week
