first.”

“You already have evidence.”

“I know.”

“But if we leave this here—”

“I don't want them to know we found months.

I sat across from him.

“Mark, do you think I'm sick?”

He frowned.

“Of course.”

“Do you think I'm rest.”

I nodded.

“Maybe.”

He stood.

“I'm going to make dinner.”

“I already ate.”

He stopped.

“You didn't.”

“I did.”

“With who?”

“Karen.”

Another pause.

“You went to see Karen?”

“Yes.”

His jaw tightened.

“Why?”

“Why does it matter?”

“It doesn't.”

But it clearly did.

He walked into the kitchen.

I followed.

He opened the refrigerator.

“You want tea?”

“No.”

“Coffee?”

“No.”

He closed the refrigerator.

“You're making this very difficult.”

I looked at him.

“I haven't done anything.”

“You've become suspicious of everything.”

“Maybe I have a reason.”

His eyes hardened.

“Diane.”

“What?”

“Stop.”

I waited.

He lowered his voice.

“You're letting your imagination run away with you.”

I almost told him about the laboratory.

About the packet.

About the documents.

About the notebook.

Instead, I said,

“I'll try to be more reasonable.”

The relief on his face was immediate.

That told me enough.

Over the next week, I became careful.

I ate outside the house whenever possible.

I bought sealed drinks.

I kept my own medication locked away.

I stopped discussing appointments in front of Mark.

And I continued collecting evidence.

Tom introduced me to an attorney named Melissa Grant.

She was direct and patient.

After reviewing the documents, she leaned back in her chair.

“This is serious.”

“I know.”

“Do you understand what guardianship could mean?”

“Someone else could control my finances.”

“Potentially.”

“My medical decisions?”

“Potentially, depending on the court order.”

“My home?”

“Possibly.”

I looked down.

“So they don't need to prove I'm completely incapable.”

“No. They need enough evidence to persuade a court that you cannot adequately manage certain affairs.”

Melissa tapped the notebook.

“And this is exactly the kind of documentation someone might try to use.”

“Even if the symptoms were caused by medication?”

“That becomes extremely important.”

She looked at the laboratory report.

“If someone deliberately caused the symptoms and then documented those symptoms as proof of incapacity, that changes the entire context.”

I felt sick.

“What do I do?”

“Do not confront them yet.”

“Everyone keeps telling me that.”

“Because you have more to gain by documenting the truth than by forcing a confession.”

She paused.

“There is another issue.”

“What?”

“The insurance policy.”

She showed me a copy of the submission.

“The electronic signature was entered from a device registered to your husband.”

My mouth went dry.

“Can they prove he did it?”

“Not yet.”

“But it was his device.”

“Yes.”

I stared at the document.

“Why would he need two million dollars?”

Melissa looked at Tom.

Tom answered.

“We're checking his finances.”

Two days later, Tom called.

“His business is in trouble.”

“How bad?”

“Bad enough that creditors have been calling.”

“How much?”

He gave me a number.

I sat down.

It was far more debt than I had imagined.

“Does he have access to my inheritance?”

“Not directly.”

“Then why would he need it?”

Tom's answer was simple.

“Because he may not be able to survive without it.”

I closed my eyes.

Twenty-six years of marriage.

Twenty-six years of shared plans.

And somewhere beneath all of it, Mark had apparently been looking at my inheritance as a solution to his financial problems.

Still, something didn't make sense.

If money was the motive, why involve Judith?

Why had she been documenting me?

Why had she researched guardianship?

The answer came from an unexpected source.

Harold called me.

“I need to talk to you.”

We met at a small park.

He looked exhausted.

“Judith told me something before she went into the hospital.”

“What?”

“She said she was afraid.”

“Of me?”

“No.”

He looked away.

“She said Mark was becoming desperate.”

My heart tightened.

“What did he tell her?”

“He said he needed help.”

“With what?”

“Money.”

I waited.

Harold continued.

“He asked your mother-in-law to convince you to put your inheritance into a family trust.”

“I refused.”

“I know.”

“When?”

“Months ago.”

I remembered that conversation.

Judith had suggested that my aunt's money could be “better protected” if Mark helped manage it.

I had thought she was simply being intrusive.

Harold looked at me.

“She became angry when you refused.”

I swallowed.

“Did she say anything else?”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“She said that if you couldn't be trusted with the money, someone responsible would have to take over.”

The words struck me harder than I expected.

“Who?”

“That's what I don't know.”

Harold reached into his coat.

He handed me an envelope.

“I found this in Judith's study.”

Inside was a printed guardianship petition.

My name was at the top.

The document wasn't filed.

Not yet.

But the proposed petitioner was listed.

Mark Foster.

My husband.

I stared at the page.

For months, he had been telling me I was forgetful.

For months, Judith had been recording my mistakes.

For months, someone had apparently been preparing to make my private struggles into legal evidence.

And now I understood the full shape of the plan.

The soup wasn't the entire scheme.

It was part of it.

A way to make the symptoms worse.

A way to create more incidents.

A way to make their story about me easier to believe.

I folded the document carefully.

“Harold,” I said, “why are you giving this to me?”

His eyes filled.

“Because I should have stopped them earlier.”

He looked toward the trees.

“I kept telling myself I was protecting my family.”

I put the document into my bag.

“You were protecting silence.”

He nodded.

Neither of us spoke for a while.

Then my phone vibrated.

It was Tom.

I answered.

His voice was low.

“We found something else.”

“What?”

“An audio recording.”

My pulse quickened.

“Of who?”

“Mark and Judith.”

“Talking about me?”

“Yes.”

“What do they say?”

Tom paused.

“You need to hear it before we do anything else.”

I looked at the guardianship petition in my hands.

For the first time, I wasn't wondering whether my husband was hiding something.

I knew he was.

Now I needed to know how far he had been willing to go.

<a
