laughed.

Instead, I lowered my eyes.

“What are you suggesting?”

“A temporary guardianship.”

“Over me?”

“Not over you.”

He sat on the edge of the chair.

“Over certain financial matters.”

I looked at the petition.

The language was carefully chosen.

It described me as increasingly forgetful.

It mentioned missed appointments.

It mentioned confusion.

It mentioned my inability to maintain consistent medication management.

It did not mention the sedatives.

It did not mention the laboratory.

It did not mention the insurance policy.

It did not mention the notebook.

And it certainly did not mention the recording.

Mark placed another document on the bed.

“I've been trying to protect you.”

“From the recording, I might have believed him.

That realization hurt more than I expected.

Because the man sitting in front of me wasn't a stranger.

He was the person who had held my hand when my father died.

The person who had driven through a snowstorm to bring me medicine.

The person who had stood beside me at our daughter's wedding.

The genuinely hurt.

“Diane, why would you think that?”

Because I had heard him.

Because I had seen the packet.

Because my body had been telling me the truth waited until the bedroom door closed.

I immediately called Melissa.

“He brought the petition.”

“Did he ask you to downstairs.

I went through the garage.

Tom was waiting around the corner.

We drove directly to Melissa's office.

The next morning, we filed protective paperwork concerning my assets.

It wasn't dramatic.

There were no shouting matches.

No police at the door.

Just forms, signatures, account restrictions, and careful documentation.

But the effect was significant.

Mark would not be able to move my inheritance without my authorization.

The insurance policy was flagged for review.

And Melissa sent a notice that any guardianship proceeding would be contested.

Then we waited.

Three days passed.

Nothing happened.

On the fourth morning, I received a call from the hospital.

Judith wanted to see me.

I almost refused.

Melissa advised me to go, provided I did not meet Judith alone.

Tom accompanied me.

Judith looked smaller in the hospital bed.

Her hair was uncombed.

A blanket covered her legs.

When she saw me, she began crying.

“I
