Northbridge had been registered eighteen months earlier. Its listed business address was a suite in a commercial building downtown. Its registered agent was a corporate services firm used by dozens of small companies.

There were three listed officers.

The first was Daniel Voss.

The second was Nathan Cartwright.

The third name made me stop.

Elaine Cartwright.

“Nathan's mother?”

Mara nodded.

I stared at the screen.

“Why would his mother be involved?”

“I don't know yet.”

The company had been formed during the same month Nathan first began talking seriously about the equity vote. That timing bothered me more than anything else.

Mara opened another filing.

Northbridge had received an initial capital contribution of $250,000.

My inheritance account had contained considerably more than that.

“Is this the transfer?”

“Not directly.”

She enlarged the transaction history.

“There are several intermediary accounts.”

I leaned closer.

The first transfer had gone from my investment account to a holding account attached to a financial adviser I recognized.

Nathan had introduced me to him.

The money then moved into another account.

From there, it went to Northbridge.

The chain was clean enough to look legitimate.

That was what frightened me.

Someone had taken the time to make the transfer difficult to trace.

“Can we reverse it?”

“Possibly.”

“Possibly?”

“If you authorized the initial transaction, we have to establish that you did not authorize the subsequent movement.”

“I didn't.”

“I know.”

She looked at me.

“But knowing isn't enough. We need records.”

I understood.

The old Claire would have called Nathan and demanded the money back.

The woman sitting in Mara's office knew better.

“Then get the records.”

Mara smiled faintly.

“That's exactly what we're doing.”

By noon, we had another discovery.

Northbridge had purchased a condominium in the city.

The deed listed the company as owner.

The property was worth nearly $900,000.

I recognized the building.

Nathan had once told me it was too expensive for us.

He had called it a terrible investment.

Apparently it was a terrible investment for me.

Not for him.

I stared at the photograph of the building on the property listing.

“Who lives there?”

Mara checked the records.

“No tenant listed.”

“Then why buy it?”

She opened another document.

A security deposit.

Furniture deliveries.

Utilities.

A renovation contract.

Everything had been paid through Northbridge.

Then I saw the date of the first furniture delivery.

Two months after Vanessa became pregnant.

I leaned back.

Mara didn't say anything.

She didn't need to.

I understood.

The condo might have been intended for Vanessa and the baby.

But there was another possibility.

It might have been intended for Nathan himself.

A second home.

A clean exit.

A place where his public life could continue while his legal obligations to me disappeared quietly.

The thought made my skin crawl.

I asked Mara to investigate the condo further.

Then I went home.

Nathan had not contacted me since the firm revoked his access.

That silence was unlike him.

He usually filled silence with explanations.

Now there was nothing.

At 3:17, someone knocked.

I looked through the window.

Daniel Voss stood on the porch.

I knew him from photographs and from the occasional firm dinner.

He was Nathan's closest friend.

I opened the door but did not invite him in.

“Daniel.”

“Can we talk?”

“About what?”

“Nathan.”

“I don't have anything to say to him.”

“I didn't come for him.”

That surprised me.

He looked tired.

“May I come inside?”

I stepped aside.

Daniel entered slowly.

He looked around the townhouse.

“It's strange being here.”

“You've been here before.”

“Not often.”

I remembered.

Nathan had always kept his colleagues away from the house.

At the time, I had assumed it was because he wanted privacy.

Now I wondered whether he had been afraid someone would discover me.

Daniel sat down.

“I owe you an apology.”

“For what?”

“For knowing.”

My throat tightened.

“You knew?”

He nodded.

“I knew Nathan was married.”

“How long?”

“Almost from the beginning.”

“Did you know he was cheating?”

He looked down.

“Yes.”

The room became very quiet.

“Did you know about Vanessa?”

“Yes.”

“And you said nothing.”

“I thought he was going to fix it.”

“When?”

“I don't know.”

I stared at him.

“You all knew.”

“Not everyone.”

“Enough people did.”

Daniel rubbed his hands together.

“Nathan told me the marriage was complicated.”

“He told everyone that.”

“He said you had agreed to keep things private.”

“I did.”

Daniel looked up.

“He made it sound like you were comfortable with it.”

I laughed quietly.

“That was convenient.”

Daniel nodded.

“There is something else.”

I waited.

“The Northbridge company wasn't originally his idea.”

My attention sharpened.

“Whose was it?”

“His mother.”

I remembered the third name.

Elaine.

“Why?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Because Nathan's father had done something similar years ago.”

“What?”

“Moved assets through private companies before a divorce.”

I stared at him.

“His father divorced?”

“Twice.”

“And the companies?”

Daniel nodded.

“His mother learned how to protect family assets.”

I stood.

“Protect them from whom?”

Daniel looked at me.

“Spouses.”

The word made my stomach drop.

“Why would she need to protect Nathan's assets from me?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I don't know.”

I walked to the window.

Rain had begun tapping against the glass.

The answer was becoming clearer.

Nathan's family had experience with financial separation.

They knew how to move assets.

They knew how to hide ownership.

And they had placed my inheritance inside a structure I had never approved.

“What did Nathan tell you about me?”

Daniel was silent for a moment.

“He said you trusted him completely.”

I closed my eyes.

That sentence hurt more than the rest.

Not because it was false.

Because it had been true.

Daniel stood.

“I brought something.”

He removed a small flash drive from his jacket.

“What is it?”

“Emails.”

“Between whom?”

“Nathan and Elaine.”

I looked at the drive.

“Why are you giving this to me?”

“Because after what happened last night, I realized I had been helping him lie.”

I took it.

“Does he know you have this?”

“No.”

Daniel walked toward the door.

Before leaving, he stopped.

“You should read the folder called ‘After Vote.’”

Then he left.

I waited until his car disappeared.

Only then did I connect the drive to my laptop.

There were hundreds of files.

I opened the folder.

The first email was from Elaine to Nathan.

Once the board confirms your position, the rest can be transferred without Claire's involvement. Keep her calm until then.

I read the sentence again.

My hands began to shake.

Another message followed.

Vanessa cannot know about the marriage until the equity vote is secure. Her father must remain confident that she will have a future with you.

I covered my mouth.

Then another.

If Claire files first, the timing provision becomes complicated. Do not let her speak to an independent attorney.

I stopped breathing.

The prenup.

The secrecy.

The equity vote.

Vanessa.

The inheritance.

It wasn't chaos.

It was a plan.

And I had been the only person in the marriage who had not been shown the plan.

I kept reading.

Then I found the final email.

It was from Nathan.

What if she refuses to cooperate?

Elaine's reply was short.

Then make her believe leaving is her idea.

I stared at the screen.

A cold calm settled over me.

Nathan had not simply betrayed me.

He had planned for my reaction.

He had expected me to become emotional.

He had expected me to leave quietly.

And if I did, he could use the prenup to protect what he had moved.

I closed the laptop.

For the first time since the paralegal spoke those words at the firm, I knew exactly what I had to do.

I wasn't going to disappear.

I was going to make them explain every number.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: Claire Stopped Running From Nathan and Started Following the Money, Until One Transfer Connected His Secret Company to an Unexpected Person

Mara gave me the company name twice because I did not recognize it. “Northbridge Strategic Holdings.” I wrote it on the back of an envelope. “What is it?” “That is …

[1

post-4425","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-sharestory
["GET
