10 – The Child From Three Years Earlier Changed Everything, and Claire Finally Learned Why Nathan Had Needed Her Marriage Kept Invisible

The patient number led to a pediatric clinic.

The clinic could not release the child's identity without proper authorization, but the date and records gave us a direction.

The sample had been collected during a medical evaluation.

The child's initials were A.C.

My initials.

I stared at the page.

“That's impossible.”

Mara looked at me carefully.

“Claire, were you ever pregnant?”

“No.”

“Are you certain?”

“Yes.”

“Any pregnancy you didn't carry to term?”

“No.”

I knew immediately what she was asking.

There had never been a pregnancy.

No child.

No miscarriage.

Nothing.

Then why A.C.?

Samuel traced the laboratory account.

The sample had been submitted through a private clinic.

The billing account belonged to Nathan.

The medical file listed an emergency contact.

Elaine Cartwright.

I felt cold.

“Nathan had access to a child with my initials.”

Mara nodded.

“Or someone wanted him to believe he did.”

The mystery became stranger when the investigator located the physician who had ordered the test.

Dr. Helen Ward.

She agreed to speak with Mara under the appropriate legal protections.

I went with her.

The doctor remembered Nathan.

“He came in with a child.”

“What child?”

“A little boy.”

“How old?”

“About three.”

My heart stopped.

“Did Nathan say he was the father?”

“He said the child was connected to his family.”

“That isn't the same thing.”

“No.”

Dr. Ward opened her old records.

The child's name had been entered as Aaron Cole.

I recognized the surname.

Cole.

It was my mother's maiden name.

I looked at Mara.

“That's my family name.”

The doctor continued.

“Nathan said the boy's mother had died.”

I stared.

“My mother died when I was eighteen.”

“I know,” Mara said.

“But my mother had no other children.”

The doctor frowned.

“I can only tell you what was provided.”

The boy had been brought in for a genetic screening because Nathan suspected a hereditary condition.

That explained the test.

But not the identity.

“Why did Nathan think the boy was related to me?”

Dr. Ward looked at the record.

“Because he brought a copy of your father's genetic information.”

I felt dizzy.

“My father's?”

“Yes.”

Mara asked whether the doctor still had the copy.

She did.

The sample had been obtained years earlier during my father's medical treatment.

Nathan had used it without my knowledge.

The doctor had assumed he had authorization.

He hadn't.

We left the clinic in silence.

Outside, I sat on a bench.

“My father had another child?”

Mara shook her head.

“We don't know.”

Then she remembered something.

“Your father's first marriage.”

I looked at her.

“My father was married before my mother.”

“Yes.”

“I knew.”

“Did he have children?”

“Not that I know of.”

Mara called the estate attorney.

The answer came that afternoon.

There had been a son.

My father's first wife had given birth to a boy.

He had been adopted when he was an infant.

I stared at the records.

Aaron Cole.

My half-brother.

I had never known he existed.

But why did Nathan know?

The answer came from the adoption records.

My father's old attorney had kept a sealed file because my father had continued sending money to the boy's adoptive family.

Nathan had found the file.

He had discovered my half-brother.

And he had used that knowledge as another financial calculation.

I didn't understand.

Mara did.

“If your father had acknowledged another child, the estate could potentially have been challenged.”

I stared at her.

“But my inheritance was already settled.”

“Yes.”

“Then why would Nathan care?”

“Because the Cartwright family had reason to believe the estate could be reopened.”

My father's refusal to do business with them had not ended the dispute.

He had simply prevented it from becoming public.

Nathan had found the hidden son.

Then he had discovered something else.

Aaron was alive.

He was struggling financially.

And Elaine had contacted him.

We found the payment records.

Small payments.

Regular payments.

Northbridge had been sending money to Aaron for two years.

My hands went numb.

Nathan had been paying my half-brother.

Why?

The answer was in a letter.

Aaron had been told that his biological father had left him an inheritance.

He had not been told the full truth.

He believed the Cartwright family was helping him recover money from an estate.

They were actually using him as leverage.

If Aaron challenged the estate, my inheritance could become entangled in litigation.

Nathan could then argue that the funds were uncertain.

That would make moving them into Northbridge easier.

It was another contingency plan.

I sat in Mara's office with the letter in my hands.

“What happened to the money?”

“Some was returned.”

“Some?”

“Aaron eventually stopped cooperating.”

“Why?”

“He learned he had been deceived.”

That was when we found him.

Aaron Cole lived two hours away.

He agreed to meet me.

I expected a stranger.

Instead, when he walked through the café door, I saw my father.

Not exactly.

The same eyes.

The same crooked smile.

The same way of tapping his thumb against his index finger when nervous.

He stopped when he saw me.

“Claire?”

I nodded.

He sat.

Neither of us spoke.

Finally he said, “I didn't know you existed until I was twenty-seven.”

“I didn't know you existed until this week.”

He laughed sadly.

“That sounds like our family.”

We talked for two hours.

He told me about the Cartwrights.

Elaine had approached him after he lost his job.

She said his biological father had left financial matters unresolved.

She offered help.

Nathan became involved later.

Aaron believed Nathan was helping him.

Then Nathan asked him to sign documents.

Aaron refused.

That was when the payments stopped.

“Why did Nathan have my father's DNA?” I asked.

Aaron looked confused.

“Your father's DNA?”

“Yes.”

He thought for a moment.

“Because Nathan wanted to prove I was related to your father.”

I stared.

“Did he?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He said it was necessary to establish my legal connection to the estate.”

Mara had been right.

Nathan had been preparing for a potential inheritance dispute.

But there was one detail Aaron had not known.

My father had already resolved the matter privately.

He had left Aaron a separate trust.

It was small compared with my inheritance.

But it existed.

Nathan had known about it.

He had tried to turn it into leverage.

Aaron reached into his bag.

“I have something for you.”

He handed me a sealed envelope.

“My adoptive mother gave me this when she died.”

Inside was a letter from my father.

Claire,

If you ever meet your brother, tell him I never forgot him.

I had to stop reading.

My vision blurred.

Aaron looked away.

I folded the letter carefully.

For the first time in weeks, the anger inside me softened.

Not toward Nathan.

Toward my father.

He had carried secrets because he thought secrecy could protect people.

Nathan had done the same.

The difference was what each man did with the trust placed in him.

That evening, Aaron agreed to give Mara the documents proving the Cartwright family had contacted him.

The evidence strengthened our case.

Then Nathan's attorney called.

“Nathan wants to settle immediately.”

“What changed?” I asked.

“He understands the evidence is serious.”

“How serious?”

The attorney hesitated.

“Serious enough that he is willing to return the remaining funds.”

“And the funds already moved?”

“He will cooperate.”

I looked at Mara.

“On one condition?”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“He wants you to meet him privately.”

I refused.

Then the attorney added:

“He says there is one document only you can retrieve.”

My pulse quickened.

“What document?”

“He says it proves he never intended to steal from you.”

I almost dismissed it.

Then I remembered the note in his folder.

If I fail, Claire deserves the truth.

Maybe Nathan had finally reached the point where he could no longer control the outcome.

I agreed to one meeting.

Not alone.

Mara would be present.

And Nathan would bring the document.

Click here to continue reading: PART
