11 – Nathan Placed the Final Document on the Table, and Claire Had to Decide Whether the Man She Married Still Deserved One Last Truth

Nathan looked older when I saw him.

Not transformed.

Not broken.

Simply tired.

His lawyer sat beside him.

Mara sat beside me.

No one pretended this was a reconciliation.

Nathan placed a thick envelope on the table.

“This is what you asked for.”

“I didn't ask for anything.”

“I know.”

He looked at me.

“I wanted you to have it.”

Mara opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

My father's handwriting.

Again.

But this one was addressed to Nathan.

I read it.

My father had written it days before our wedding.

He knew Nathan had discovered the inheritance.

He knew Elaine had approached him.

He also knew Nathan was conflicted.

The letter did not threaten him.

It challenged him.

If you marry my daughter, you will eventually have to choose whether she is your partner or an asset.

Nathan had kept the letter for three years.

I looked at him.

“Why did you keep this?”

“Because every time I wanted to tell you the truth, I read it.”

“And?”

“I still didn't.”

His voice broke slightly.

“That is my failure.”

I said nothing.

He continued.

“I thought I could fix everything after the vote.”

“You always said that.”

“I know.”

“You kept moving the finish line.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because every time I got close, there was another thing I wanted.”

He looked down.

“The partnership.”

“Then Vanessa.”

“Then the company.”

“Then the money.”

“Yes.”

“And me?”

He swallowed.

“You were the one thing I thought I could keep.”

The sentence was brutally honest.

I looked at him.

“That was your mistake.”

“I know.”

Mara asked about the remaining funds.

Nathan provided account details.

The money could be recovered.

The condominium would be sold.

Northbridge would be dissolved.

The payments to Elaine and Daniel would be investigated.

The firm would continue its disciplinary process.

The prenup would be challenged in court.

But there was one final issue.

Vanessa's baby.

Nathan had demanded a paternity test because he had discovered something in the Northbridge files.

A medical record.

Vanessa had been diagnosed with a genetic condition.

Nathan carried a related hereditary marker.

He feared the child might inherit it.

The second DNA test involving Daniel had not been about the baby.

Nathan had been trying to determine whether Daniel was genetically related to him.

The result was negative.

The confusion had come from the clinic's patient coding.

The child tested three years earlier was Aaron.

The records had been mixed inside Nathan's private files.

Nathan had panicked when he realized the mistake.

His suspicion of Vanessa had been another consequence of his obsession with controlling information.

Vanessa's baby was his.

The paternity test later confirmed it.

But the test also revealed something else.

The baby did not carry the genetic condition Nathan feared.

For the first time, there was one piece of good news in the middle of the wreckage.

Vanessa chose not to return to Nathan.

She told him she would communicate only about the child.

Daniel cooperated with the firm's investigation.

He admitted what he had done.

He also returned the consulting payments.

Elaine refused to cooperate at first.

That changed when the court issued a preservation order.

The Cartwright family structure began unraveling under scrutiny.

The more records investigators examined, the more old transactions appeared.

But none of that changed what I had to decide.

Nathan had given me the evidence.

He had returned the money.

He had admitted what he had done.

Was that enough?

Mara did not answer for me.

She only said, “You don't owe him forgiveness because he finally became honest.”

I knew that.

What I needed to decide was whether I wanted revenge.

I realized I didn't.

I wanted distance.

I wanted my name back.

I wanted my father's inheritance restored.

I wanted a life where I didn't have to inspect every promise for hidden terms.

The divorce hearing took place six weeks later.

Nathan appeared with his attorney.

I appeared with Mara.

The judge reviewed the evidence.

The marriage was dissolved.

The financial transfers were addressed separately.

The prenup was substantially revised through settlement after the court found serious questions concerning independent representation and the circumstances surrounding its execution.

I did not walk out richer because I had defeated Nathan.

I walked out because the legal relationship was finally over.

Outside the courthouse, Nathan waited.

“I won't ask you to come back,” he said.

“Good.”

He nodded.

“I just wanted to say thank you.”

“For what?”

“For not destroying Vanessa.”

I looked at him.

“I didn't save her.”

“No.”

“She saved herself.”

He smiled sadly.

“That sounds like something you would say.”

I turned to leave.

“Claire.”

I stopped.

“I'm sorry.”

This time, I believed he meant it.

It didn't change anything.

I walked away.

That evening, Aaron came to my house.

He brought flowers.

“For your first night as a free woman.”

I smiled.

“I'm still legally buried in paperwork.”

“Then flowers for surviving the paperwork.”

We laughed.

It was the first uncomplicated laugh I had had in months.

The next morning, Mara called.

“The final Northbridge account has been located.”

“How much?”

“Enough to make the recovery complete.”

I closed my eyes.

For three years, Nathan had told me that everything would be settled after the vote.

He had been wrong.

The real ending came when I stopped waiting for him to decide my future.

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: Three Years After the
