did.”

He stepped inside.

For several seconds, he stood awkwardly in the living room.

His eyes moved toward the photograph of David.

“I miss ago.”

“Why?”

“They wanted me to convince David to sell.”

“And after he refused?”

“They told me to him.

“What does your contract say?”

He rubbed his palms together.

“They can demand repayment if I fail to secure the access him.

“On what?”

He looked embarrassed.

“Debt.”

“What kind?”

“Business debt.”

I did not don't know.”

“That isn't good enough.”

“I know.”

I stood and walked to the window.

The lake was calm.

“What happens if you refuse?”

“They can sue me.”

“What happens if you cooperate?”

“They get the access.”

“And then?”

“They build.”

I turned.

“You know what that means.”

“Yes.”

“The shoreline.”

“Yes.”

“The fishing area.”

“Yes.”

“And the cabin.”

He looked away.

“Eventually.”

I studied him.

“Why are you telling me this?”

“Because I read David's statement.”

My breath caught.

“You heard it?”

“Miles showed me part of it.”

I said nothing.

“He said you were the person he wanted protected.”

Travis's voice cracked slightly.

“I hadn't realized how much he knew about us.”

I looked toward the photograph.

“He knew.”

“I thought he was just angry with me.”

“He was.”

Travis nodded.

“I deserved it.”

Then he reached into his jacket.

He pulled out an envelope.

“This is the contract.”

I did not touch it.

“Why are you giving me this?”

“Because I want out.”

“Then give it to your lawyer.”

“I did.”

“And?”

“He told me I needed to make a choice.”

“What choice?”

“Either help them or expose what they did.”

I picked up the envelope.

Inside was a copy of the agreement between Travis and the development company.

I read the first page.

Then the second.

The language was aggressive.

The company had not merely paid him.

They had required him to use his family relationship to persuade David's widow to sell.

There was a clause about confidential information.

Another about commissions.

And another that made my stomach turn.

The company would receive priority negotiation rights over the property if Travis obtained control.

I looked at him.

“They were planning to control the land through you.”

“Yes.”

“You knew?”

“Not at first.”

“When did you find out?”

“After David died.”

I shook my head.

“And you still came.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I was afraid.”

It was the first thing he had said that sounded completely honest.

I closed the envelope.

“Fear doesn't excuse what you did.”

“I know.”

“But it explains it.”

He looked at me.

“Yes.”

I sat down.

“What do you want from me?”

“Nothing.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“I want you to refuse them.”

“I already have.”

“I mean formally.”

“You want me to sign something?”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“I want you to let Miles know I gave you this.”

I looked at the contract.

“That won't protect you.”

“I know.”

“What will?”

“Nothing.”

He looked toward the photograph.

“Maybe that's the point.”

Before I could respond, my phone rang.

Miles.

I answered.

“Hannah, are you with Travis?”

“Yes.”

“I need both of you to listen.”

Travis leaned closer.

Miles's voice was urgent.

“The development company filed a preliminary application for the road expansion.”

My heart dropped.

“When?”

“This morning.”

“Can they do that?”

“They can apply.”

“And what does it mean?”

“It means the pressure is escalating.”

Travis closed his eyes.

Miles continued.

“There is another problem.”

“What?”

“They've submitted a claim that the historical access arrangement is no longer valid.”

I looked at Travis.

He shook his head.

“They're trying to eliminate the shoreline restriction.”

“Can they?”

“Not easily.”

“What do we need?”

“Evidence that the access agreement has been continuously recognized.”

I remembered the newspaper clipping.

“The historical society has records.”

“That helps.”

“There's more.”

I told him about the old maps.

“That helps too.”

Travis spoke for the first time.

“My grandfather kept records.”

Miles paused.

“What kind?”

“Property records. Letters. County correspondence.”

“Where?”

“At Mom's house.”

I looked at him.

“Will she give them to us?”

“She may not.”

“Then why tell us?”

“Because I know where they are.”

I understood.

“You're going to get them.”

He nodded.

“Tonight.”

Miles agreed.

The three of us ended the call.

For the first time, Travis and I were standing on the same side of something.

I didn't trust him.

But I understood that trust was not necessary for cooperation.

We drove to his mother's house separately.

I waited in my car while Travis entered.

Twenty minutes passed.

Then thirty.

Finally, he came out carrying a cardboard box.

He got into my passenger seat.

“Did she see you?”

“Yes.”

“What did you tell her?”

“That I needed family records.”

“Does she know why?”

“No.”

We drove back to the cabin.

Inside the box were old letters, property receipts, maps, and photographs.

We spread them across the dining table.

One letter stopped me.

It was written by David's grandfather to a county commissioner.

He described the shoreline agreement and the reason it mattered.

The lake, he wrote, should not become accessible only to those who could afford to buy the land around it.

I looked at Travis.

“Your grandfather wrote this?”

“Yes.”

I read the letter again.

Then I found another.

And another.

The arrangement had been honored for decades.

The development company's claim was weak.

But there was one document missing.

A formal county acknowledgment from twenty-six years earlier.

Without it, the company could still argue that the agreement had expired.

“Where is it?” I asked.

Travis shook his head.

“I don't know.”

Miles arrived.

He examined the box.

Then he looked at me.

“There's a way to find it.”

“How?”

“County archive.”

“Will they have it?”

“If it exists, they should.”

We spent the next day searching.

At the county archive, an elderly records clerk disappeared into a back room.

When she returned, she carried a dusty folder.

“This was misfiled years ago,” she said.

I opened it.

There it was.

The missing acknowledgment.

Signed.

Stamped.

Recorded.

Valid.

I felt relief wash through me.

Miles smiled.

“This changes everything.”

But before we could celebrate, the clerk looked at another page.

“There is something else.”

“What?”

She turned the document around.

A recent notation had been added.

Someone had requested a certified copy three weeks earlier.

The requester was listed by name.

The development company.

They had known the document existed.

They had been preparing their challenge before David's funeral.

I looked at Travis.

His face had gone pale.

“They planned this before he died.”

Miles closed the folder.

“Which means this was never simply about an inheritance.”

I thought about the realtor.

The deadline.

The house.

The cabin.

The money.

Everything had been part of the same strategy.

I looked at the certified document in my hands.

“They wanted me out before I could understand what David protected.”

No one disagreed.

Then my phone vibrated.

An unfamiliar number.

I answered.

A man's voice said, “Mrs. Bennett, we need to discuss an offer.”

I recognized the company name.

I hung up.

Thirty seconds later, a message appeared.

It contained one sentence.

If you refuse to sell, we will see you in court.

I looked at Miles.

He nodded.

“Save it.”

I did.

Then I looked at Travis.

“Now they know we have the document.”

He swallowed.

“Yes.”

“And they know I'm not selling.”

He nodded.

Miles gathered the records.

“Then we prepare.”

I looked through the cabin window toward the lake.

The water was dark beneath the evening sky.

The peaceful place David had loved had become the center of a fight neither of us had expected.

But this time, I wasn't alone.

<a
