I stopped them.

Dad replied almost instantly.

Why?

I stared at the screen.

There were dozens of possible answers.

Because nobody saved me a chair.

Because you let Mia's new boyfriend take my place.

Because I was tired.

Because I had spent years contributing to something that everyone treated as guaranteed.

Instead, I wrote:

I don't want to contribute anymore.

The typing indicator appeared.

Then disappeared.

Then appeared again.

Finally:

That's a little extreme, Connor.

I put my phone away.

At work, I spent most of the afternoon reviewing a contract, but my attention kept returning to the same thought.

They believed the account belonged to the family.

They didn't understand that most of the money belonged to me.

That distinction mattered.

I had never hidden the account.

I had simply never made a point of reminding everyone who had contributed what.

There was no reason to.

Until now.

That evening, Zach called.

I let it ring.

He called again.

I answered.

“What?”

“Dad says you pulled your money.”

“I withdrew my contributions.”

“Same thing.”

“No, it isn't.”

He sighed.

“Why are you doing this?”

“I'm not doing anything to you.”

“We were planning Aruba.”

“You were planning Aruba.”

“We were all planning Aruba.”

“Who was paying for it?”

Silence.

I knew the answer.

Zach cleared his throat.

“We all contributed.”

“Check the records.”

“That's not the point.”

“Then what is?”

He didn't answer.

I could hear traffic through his car window.

Finally, he said, “You're acting like this because of the dinner.”

“Yes.”

“You're letting one stupid mistake change everything.”

“One mistake doesn't explain three years.”

“What does that mean?”

I told him about the deposits.

The repairs.

The hotel.

The money I had sent to Mom and Dad.

The times I had paid without being asked twice.

Zach became defensive.

“You volunteered.”

“I back.”

“Then what do you want?”

I looked around my apartment.

“I want you to stop assuming I'll always say yes.”

He laughed once.

“That's what family does.”

“No,” I said. “Family asks.”

The line went silent.

When he finally spoke, his voice was colder.

“Mom and Dad are really hurt.”

“I know.”

“They think you're punishing them.”

“I'm not.”

“You've changed.”

I looked at the dark window.

“Maybe.”

He hung up.

I sat alone for a long time.

The next morning, Mom called.

I answered because I knew avoiding her wouldn't make the conversation disappear.

“Connor,” she said.

“Hi, Mom.”

“Your father tells me you withdrew the vacation money.”

“My contributions.”

“Yes, your contributions.”

She sounded careful.

“We were all looking forward to the trip.”

“I hope you enjoy it.”

“We can't afford it now.”

I didn't say anything.

She continued.

“I thought you understood that this was something we were doing together.”

“I did.”

“Then why would you suddenly pull out?”

I took a breath.

“Because I don't want to keep paying for something I don't feel included in.”

There was silence.

Then Mom said, “This is still about the dinner.”

“Yes.”

“I already told you it was an accident.”

“Was it?”

She hesitated.

That hesitation told me more than any explanation could have.

“You knew Derek was coming,” I said.

“Yes.”

“You knew he was sitting beside Mia.”

“Yes.”

“You knew there wouldn't be another chair.”

Another pause.

“We thought we could figure something out.”

“When?”

“I don't know.”

“After I arrived?”

“Connor, it was complicated.”

“It wasn't complicated for me.”

She sighed.

“I didn't think you'd actually leave.”

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

Not an apology.

A confession.

They had expected me to absorb the insult.

To stand there.

To laugh along.

To wait.

Because I had always waited.

Mom's voice softened.

“You've never been this difficult.”

I opened my eyes.

“Maybe I've never been this honest.”

She said nothing.

Then I heard Dad in the background.

“What does he want?”

Mom covered the phone, but I could still hear him.

“He's upset about the dinner.”

Dad's voice sharpened.

“He needs to get over it.”

Mom returned.

“Your father says you should come over Sunday.”

“Why?”

“We should discuss the vacation.”

I almost laughed.

Not the dinner.

Not the missing chair.

The vacation.

“Fine,” I said.

Sunday came slowly.

When I arrived at my parents' house, Mia's SUV was parked in the driveway.

The huge red bow was gone.

I stood beside my car for a moment.

Then I walked inside.

Mom hugged me.

I let her.

Dad was sitting at the kitchen table with a folder in front of him.

Zach was already there.

Mia came down the stairs.

Derek followed her.

I stopped.

Mom noticed.

“Derek is here too.”

“Of course he is.”

Derek smiled.

“Connor.”

I nodded.

He pulled out a chair.

There were four chairs around the table.

I remained standing.

Nobody said anything.

The irony was so obvious that even Zach looked uncomfortable.

Dad cleared his throat.

“Sit down.”

I looked at the chair.

Then at him.

“Are you sure?”

His face tightened.

“Just sit.”

I did.

Dad opened the folder.

“We need to discuss the vacation.”

“I already told you my position.”

“This affects everyone.”

“I understand.”

“We need to replace the money.”

I looked at Zach.

“Why don't you?”

He shifted in his chair.

Dad answered for him.

“We're all going through expenses.”

“So am I.”

“You have the means.”

I looked at him.

“Who told you that?”

Dad frowned.

“You've always been good with money.”

“That isn't the same thing.”

Mia crossed her arms.

“You're acting like we don't appreciate what you've done.”

I turned toward her.

“You posted a picture of a luxury SUV two days after telling me our parents couldn't afford a vacation.”

Her expression changed.

Mom immediately said, “That's not your business.”

I looked at her.

“Exactly.”

Silence settled over the kitchen.

Derek leaned back.

“This is getting ridiculous.”

I turned to him.

“You've been here for five minutes.”

He shrugged.

“I just mean everyone's tense.”

I looked at him carefully.

“Do you know how much the vacation account contains?”

“No.”

“Do you know how much I contributed?”

“No.”

“Then maybe don't tell me how ridiculous my reaction is.”

Derek's smile disappeared.

Dad closed the folder.

“This isn't productive.”

“Then what is?”

He stared at me.

“I want my family back.”

I felt something soften inside me.

For a moment, I wanted to believe him.

Then he added:

“And I don't want money to come between us.”

I nodded.

“Neither do I.”

“Then restore the funds.”

I stared at him.

There it was.

The condition.

The family was welcome as long as I kept financing it.

I stood.

“No.”

Mom's eyes widened.

“Connor.”

“I'll help when I choose to help. I won't be expected to.”

Dad looked furious.

“You're making a huge mistake.”

“Maybe.”

I picked up my coat.

Mia stood too.

“You're really going to walk away from us?”

I looked at her.

“I walked away from a dinner.”

She stared.

“You're the ones turning it into everything else.”

Then I left.

Outside, my phone buzzed before I reached my car.

It was an email notification from my investment account.

Nothing unusual.

But when I opened it, I noticed another message beneath it.

A legal notice.

Someone had requested information about one of my property holdings.

I frowned.

The request wasn't from my bank.

It wasn't from the property manager.

It came from a law firm.

I opened the attachment.

The document referenced a company name I recognized immediately.

Derek's company.

I read the page twice.

Then a third time.

He wasn't just Mia's new boyfriend.

He had been asking questions about financing.

About property.

About potential investors.

And somehow, my name was included in the inquiry.

I stood beside my car with the afternoon sun burning against the windshield.

The family dinner had started with a missing chair.

Now I was looking at something much more serious.

Someone had been looking into my finances.

And for the first time, I wondered whether Derek's arrival at that anniversary table had been about more than Mia.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: The More I Investigated Derek’s Interest in My Finances, the More I Realized My Family Had Invited Someone Into Their Lives for Reasons I Never Saw Coming

Three days after the anniversary dinner, Dad texted me.
