after the event.

I opened it at my kitchen table.

Mia and Derek.

Engagement Celebration.

Saturday evening.

The venue was a private events hall on the other side of town.

At the bottom was a handwritten note.

Connor, we really hope you'll come.

I stared at the words.

Then I noticed something else.

The invitation wasn't signed by Mia.

It was signed by Mom.

I set it down.

I wasn't sure whether that mattered.

Maybe I was becoming suspicious of everything.

But after the anniversary dinner, I had learned that small details mattered.

I called Mia.

“Did you send this?”

“Yes.”

“Your mother signed it.”

“She helped with the invitations.”

“Okay.”

She laughed nervously.

“Are you interrogating stationery now?”

“No.”

“Good.”

There was a pause.

“Will you come?”

“I haven't decided.”

“I'd really like you there.”

“Why?”

“Because you're my brother.”

That answer was simple.

I wanted to accept it.

So I did.

“I'll come.”

Her voice softened.

“Thank you.”

For the first time in months, I felt something like hope.

Maybe things could be repaired.

Maybe the family could learn to be a family without expecting my wallet to hold everything together.

Then I received a message from Rachel.

Have you heard about Derek's company?

I called her.

“What happened?”

“Nothing yet.”

“Then reassuring.

“Rachel.”

“He mentioned your family.”

I closed my eyes.

“What did he say?”

“That your parents were supportive.”

“They are.”

“And that you had financial experience.”

I stared at the invitation.

“When did he say this?”

“Last week.”

I ended the call.

Then I called Mia.

“Has Derek asked about me again?”

She was quiet.

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“He hasn't talked to me about your money.”

“That's not what I asked.”

She sighed.

“I don't know.”

I sat down.

“Then ask him.”

“I don't want to fight.”

“Neither do I.”

“Connor, please.”

“I need to know whether I'm being invited because I'm your brother or because someone thinks I can finance something.”

She started crying.

“I don't know.”

“Okay.”

“I really don't.”

“I believe you.”

That night, I emailed my attorney.

I asked him to review any documents related to Derek's company that had my name attached.

He found nothing new.

But he advised me not to discuss investments at the party.

I promised I wouldn't.

The engagement celebration arrived.

I wore a charcoal Harper?”

“Yes.”

She smiled.

“You're on the list.”

I almost laughed.

“Good.”

She checked again.

“Your table is number six.”

I walked inside.

Table six was near the front.

There were ten chairs.

Nine people were already seated.

One chair remained empty.

A small card sat in front of it.

Connor.

I stood there for several seconds.

Mia saw me.

Her face lit up.

“You came.”

“I said I would.”

She hugged me.

I hugged her back.

For a moment, everything felt normal.

Then Derek approached.

“Glad you made it.”

I nodded.

“Congratulations.”

“Thanks.”

His handshake was firm.

Too firm.

The old unease returned.

But I pushed it aside.

Tonight was about Mia.

I sat.

Dinner began.

People talked.

The atmosphere was warm.

I even laughed at something Uncle Tom said.

For the first time since the anniversary dinner, I wondered whether I had been too harsh.

Maybe people could change.

Maybe my parents were trying.

Mom came over during the first course.

“You look happy.”

“I am.”

She smiled.

“I've missed that.”

I looked at her.

“So have I.”

She touched my shoulder.

“I meant what I said. Your seat is always here.”

I nodded.

Then she walked away.

Across the room, Derek was talking to a man in a dark suit.

I recognized him.

Peter Hastings.

I had seen his name in business articles.

He was a private investor known for funding small companies.

Derek had mentioned him during our meeting.

I watched them for a moment.

Peter listened.

Derek talked.

Then Derek pointed toward me.

My stomach tightened.

Peter looked over.

Our eyes met.

He nodded politely.

I nodded back.

A few minutes later, Peter approached.

“Connor?”

“Yes.”

“Derek says you're in finance.”

“Not exactly.”

“He said you understand investments.”

“I understand my own.”

Peter smiled.

“That may be the most sensible answer I've heard tonight.”

I laughed.

“Why?”

“Because everyone here seems to think money is contagious.”

I looked at him carefully.

“What did Derek tell you?”

Peter's expression changed.

“About what?”

“About me.”

He hesitated.

“Nothing improper.”

“That wasn't my question.”

Peter looked toward Derek.

“I was told you might be interested in supporting the company.”

“I am not.”

His eyebrows rose.

“Then I may have misunderstood.”

“I think you did.”

He nodded.

“I appreciate the clarification.”

Before he left, he leaned closer.

“Be careful about what you sign tonight.”

I stared at him.

“I wasn't planning to sign anything.”

“Good.”

He walked away.

My pulse increased.

I looked across the room.

Derek was watching me.

I stood and went outside.

The evening air was cool.

A minute later, Mia followed.

“What happened?”

“Derek told Peter I might invest.”

Her face went pale.

“What?”

“He did.”

“I didn't know.”

“I believe you.”

She looked toward the door.

“I'll ask him.”

“Don't.”

“Why?”

“Because tonight is your engagement party.”

She shook her head.

“I don't care.”

“I do.”

She stared at me.

“You're still protecting me.”

“No.”

I smiled sadly.

“I'm protecting the person I want to become.”

She looked confused.

“I don't understand.”

“I don't want to be the brother who ruins your night because I'm angry.”

“But you're right.”

“Maybe.”

She wiped her eyes.

“I don't want Derek to be using you.”

“I know.”

We stood outside for another minute.

Then she said, “Come back inside.”

I did.

The evening continued.

There were speeches.

Photographs.

Cake.

Music.

Then Mom stood.

She tapped her glass.

“Before we begin the slideshow, I want to say something.”

Everyone turned toward her.

She looked at Mia.

Then Derek.

Then me.

“Our family has had its share of difficult seasons.”

My heart tightened.

“But we've always found our way back to each other.”

I looked down.

She continued.

“And tonight, we're celebrating not only Mia and Derek, but the future we're building together.”

People applauded.

I didn't.

Something about the wording bothered me.

The future we're building together.

Then the lights dimmed.

A screen came down behind the dance floor.

The first photograph appeared.

Mia as a child.

Then Zach.

Then me.

Then our parents.

The room laughed warmly.

More photographs followed.

Birthdays.

Christmas mornings.

Family vacations.

Graduations.

The old years.

Then the photographs changed.

Business documents appeared.

I sat upright.

A company registration.

An invoice.

A legal notice.

A settlement record.

The room became silent.

Derek stood abruptly.

“What is this?”

Nobody answered.

Another document appeared.

Then another.

I recognized some of them from the records I had found.

Mia turned toward Derek.

“What did you do?”

He shook his head.

“This isn't what it looks like.”

The next page appeared.

A previous investor dispute.

The words were visible across the screen.

Misrepresentation of financial backing.

Derek's face drained of color.

My father stood.

“Turn that off.”

The slideshow continued.

Then the final image appeared.

A photograph from my parents' anniversary dinner.

Everyone seated around the table.

And me standing behind them.

The empty space where my chair should have been.

The room went completely silent.

Mom covered her mouth.

Dad stared at the screen.

Mia began crying.

Derek looked directly at me.

I stood.

Nobody spoke.

I didn't know who had prepared the slideshow.

I didn't know who had sent the records.

But I knew one thing.

The truth was finally sitting at the table with us.

<a
