study.

“You don't need to worry about me,” I said.

“That's not true.”

“It is.”

He shook his head.

“You're alone.”

“I've been alone since your father died.”

“That doesn't mean you should stay alone.”

“I didn't say I would.”

His eyes narrowed slightly.

“What does that mean?”

“Nothing.”

I poured myself tea.

“I'm tired, Stuart.”

He stood there another moment.

Then he said goodbye.

After they left, I remained at the kitchen table.

My tea went cold.

I did not drink it.

Instead, I went upstairs.

I unlocked Robert's study.

The room smelled faintly of old paper and cedar.

Nothing had changed.

His desk stood beneath the window.

His books still lined the shelves.

A small brass clock sat beside the lamp.

I opened the desk drawer.

Inside were envelopes, old receipts, tax documents, and several folders.

Behind them was the fireproof box.

My hands trembled as I opened it.

I found investment statements.

Insurance documents.

Property records.

Bank accounts.

And a folder with Robert's handwriting on the front.

I sat down.

For the first time, I understood why he had always told me not to discuss our finances casually.

The house was not my only security.

There were investment accounts I had almost forgotten existed, retirement funds, and insurance proceeds he had arranged carefully.

Stuart knew none of this.

I continued searching.

At the bottom was Robert's journal.

I opened it.

The first page I found was dated October 15, 1995.

Robert had written about Stuart as a teenager.

He described him as charming, intelligent, and increasingly interested in getting what he wanted without having to wait for it.

I read another entry.

Then another.

In one, Robert wrote about helping Stuart financially when he and Jennifer bought their first house.

Robert had apparently insisted on documenting the money as a loan.

I remembered that conversation.

I had wanted to give Stuart the money.

Robert had said we needed boundaries.

At the time, I thought he was being overly cautious.

Now I wasn't so sure.

I turned another page.

A sentence stopped me.

Robert had written that I gave too much of myself to people who had learned to expect it.

I closed the journal.

My husband had understood something I had spent years refusing to see.

I stayed awake late that night.

By morning, I had made a decision.

I would not confront Stuart.

Not yet.

I would not tell him about the money.

I would not tell him I had heard the conversation.

Instead, I called someone I trusted.

“Martha?”

My former neighbor answered.

“Good morning, Inz.”

“I need your help.”

There was a pause.

“With what?”

“I want to sell my house.”

Silence.

Then Martha said, “Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“Did something happen?”

I looked toward the dining room.

“Yes,” I said. “But I don't want to discuss it over the phone.”

Martha had been a real-estate agent for more than twenty years.

She knew the neighborhood.

She knew the house.

And most importantly, she knew how to keep quiet.

“I'll come over tomorrow,” she said.

The following afternoon, Martha walked through the house slowly.

She looked at the windows, the original woodwork, the old fireplace, the kitchen renovations Robert and I had completed years earlier.

Finally she turned toward me.

“You're serious.”

“I am.”

“Do you know where you want to go?”

“Not yet.”

“Are you running away?”

I considered that.

“No.”

“What are you doing?”

I looked around the room.

“Choosing where I live next.”

Martha smiled.

“That sounds different.”

“It is.”

She sat across from me.

“Do you want the sale handled privately?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I don't want my son to know until it's finished.”

Martha did not ask another question.

She simply nodded.

“I can arrange that.”

After she left, I walked into the dining room.

The repaired china platter sat on the sideboard.

I touched it.

Three weeks.

That was all I gave myself.

Three weeks to sell the house, organize my finances, decide where I was going, and disappear from the life Stuart had already begun planning for me.

I knew it would hurt.

I knew I would miss this house.

But staying had begun to feel like surrender.

That evening, Stuart called.

“Mom, Jennifer and I want to come over Sunday.”

“For what?”

“To talk.”

“About the house?”

He hesitated.

“Yes.”

I looked toward the window.

“Come Sunday.”

When I hung up, I knew something important.

They thought Sunday would be the beginning of their plan.

They had no idea it would be the beginning of mine.
