room.

For the first time, the sale felt real.

This had been the house where Stuart took his first steps.

Where Robert and I celebrated anniversaries.

Where Christmas mornings had once been chaotic and loud.

Where I had sat beside Robert's hospital bed during his final weeks.

Selling it felt like cutting away a piece of myself.

But then I remembered Stuart's voice.

Useless old woman.

I remembered Jennifer asking whether I would even notice if things disappeared.

I remembered them discussing Cedar Grove as if my opinion were irrelevant.

The grief remained.

But so did the resolve.

That evening, I opened Robert's journal again.

I read another entry.

It described Stuart at sixteen.

Robert had worried about his son's habit of blaming others whenever consequences appeared.

I remembered thinking Robert was too hard on him.

Now I wondered whether I had been too soft.

Another entry concerned money.

Robert had written about a loan he gave Stuart and Jennifer years earlier.

He had warned that constant rescue could teach someone to expect rescue.

I closed the journal.

There was something painful about discovering that my husband had seen the pattern long before I did.

Two days later, I signed the sales agreement.

The Hendersons signed immediately afterward.

The closing date was set.

I called anger.

I did not insult Stuart.

I did not mention the turkey.

I simply explained that the house was sold, that I had made my own arrangements, and that I would contact him when I was ready.

I placed the letter in an envelope.

Then I put it inside my desk.

On my final evening, I walked through every room.

The house was almost empty.

Moonlight fell across the floorboards.

I stood in the doorway of Robert's study.

“I wish you were here,” I whispered.

The room gave me no answer.

But I knew what Robert would have told me.

He would have told me not to confuse motherhood with surrender.

The next morning, the movers arrived.

They loaded my few belongings.

A young man looked at the nearly empty house.

“That's everything?”

“Yes.”

He seemed surprised.

I smiled.

“Sometimes you don't need much to start over.”

When the truck left, I remained alone.

My phone rang.

Stuart.

I
