The porch light cast a pale rectangle across the floor between us.

“What haven't you told me?” I asked.

She swallowed.

“About your father.”

The answer startled me.

“What does Dad have to do with Julian?”

“I don't know yet.”

She walked into the kitchen and sat down. I followed, but I didn't speak. She looked older than she had that morning.

“When your father left,” she began, “I told you he simply walked away because he didn't want the responsibility of being a husband or father anymore.”

“That is what you told me.”

“I wasn't completely honest.”

My chest tightened.

She looked at her hands.

“Your father had debts.”

“I knew about the credit cards.”

“Those weren't the only debts.”

She paused.

“There was a business loan. Then another. He borrowed money from people I didn't know. Some of them weren't banks.”

I stared at her.

“What kind of people?”

“People who expected to be paid quickly.”

She told me that shortly before he disappeared, two men had come to our house. She had been terrified. My father wasn't home. They had asked where he was, whether he had taken anything, and whether she knew where he kept certain documents.

She had told them nothing.

“Did Dad know Julian?”

“Yes.”

The word landed heavily.

“How?”

“I didn't know at first.”

She explained that after my father left, she found several old business papers hidden in a cabinet. Julian's name appeared on one of them.

“He wasn't your father's partner,” she said. “At least, that's what your father told me. He said Julian was someone who helped him arrange financing.”

I sat back.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because you were sixteen.”

“That was six years before I met Julian.”

“I know.”

“And you remembered him when he approached you outside my office.”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't you recognize him when I told you I was dating someone named Julian?”

She looked embarrassed.

“Because he looked different.”

“How different?”

“Older. He had gained weight. His hair was gray. And he introduced himself as Julian Mercer.”

I stared at the table.

“So you knew there was a connection.”

“I suspected.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I didn't want to drag you back into your father's mess.”

I understood the instinct.

I hated the decision.

“What happened to Dad's debts?”

“I paid what I could.”

“With what?”

“My savings.”

I looked at her.

“You told me you used those savings for my college.”

“I used both.”

That explained things I had never understood.

The cheap apartments.

The years without vacations.

The old car she kept repairing instead of replacing.

She had been carrying a burden I hadn't known existed.

“Did Julian help your father?”

“Yes.”

“Then maybe this isn't about me.”

My mother looked up.

“I think it is about both of us.”

The next morning, we contacted the lawyer again.

This time, my mother told her everything.

My father's debts.

Julian's involvement.

The documents.

The false name.

The insurance inquiry.

The photograph.

The threats.

The lawyer listened carefully.

Then she asked, “Do you still have any documents from your husband's business?”

My mother said she did.

We spent most of the afternoon searching the attic.

Dust covered everything.

Old tax files.

School photographs.

Christmas decorations.

Boxes I hadn't opened since childhood.

Near the back, beneath a broken lamp, we found a metal lockbox.

My mother recognized it immediately.

“I thought this was empty.”

It wasn't.

Inside were copies of contracts, bank statements, letters, and a small black notebook.

The notebook had my father's handwriting.

I opened it.

Names.

Dates.

Amounts.

Payments.

Then I saw Julian's name.

Not once.

Seven times.

Beside each entry was a different amount.

My mother leaned over my shoulder.

“I never saw this.”

I turned another page.

There was a date from two months before my father disappeared.

Beside it was one sentence.

Julian says the daughter is the pressure point.

My hands went cold.

“Mom.”

She read it.

Her face changed.

“What does that mean?”

“I don't know.”

I turned the page.

Nothing.

Another page.

Nothing.

Then, near the back, another entry.

If anything happens, keep Claire away from Vance.

My mother covered her mouth.

For several seconds, neither of us moved.

My father had known.

He had been afraid of Julian.

And somehow, six years after I left the company, Julian had entered my mother's life.

The connection was no longer a coincidence.

We called the lawyer immediately.

She told us not to confront Julian.

She also told us to preserve the notebook and every document exactly as we found them.

Then she asked one question.

“Is there anything else in that box?”

I searched again.

At the bottom was a sealed envelope.

My mother's name was written on it.

The handwriting was my father's.

She opened it with shaking fingers.

Inside was a single photograph.

My father stood beside another man.

Julian.

They were much younger.

Behind them was the entrance to a warehouse.

My mother looked at the photograph.

“I know that place.”

“Where?”

“Your father used to say he kept equipment there.”

I turned the photograph over.

There was an address.

And beneath it, in my father's handwriting:

Ask about the second ledger.

I looked at my mother.

“What second ledger?”

She shook her head.

“I don't know.”

That evening, we sat at the kitchen table until midnight.

The pieces were beginning to fit.

But they were creating a picture neither of us wanted to see.

Julian had known my father.

My father had feared him.

My father's notebook suggested I had once been considered leverage.

Years later, Julian appeared in my workplace.

Then he disappeared from my life.

Then, decades later, he met my mother under a different surname.

The question was no longer why he had chosen her.

The question was why he had waited so long.

At 12:18 a.m., my mother received an email.

There was no subject line.

No message.

Only an attachment.

She opened it.

It was a scanned page from my father's notebook.

A page we had never seen.

At the bottom was a sentence written in red ink.

He never stopped looking for what I took.

My mother stared at the screen.

I leaned closer.

Then I saw the final line.

And Claire is the only person who can lead him to it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Secret My
