Margaret.

The lawyer found an old corporate record.

Margaret Ellis.

Former financial controller.

Left the company seven years ago.

No forwarding address.

No current employment listed.

But there was one detail.

She had once owned a house only forty minutes from my mother's.

The house had been sold years earlier.

The buyer had no connection to her.

We thought we had reached another dead end.

Then my mother remembered Julian mentioning Margaret.

“He told me she had died.”

I looked at her.

“When?”

“About ten years ago.”

“She didn't.”

“How do you know?”

The lawyer had already checked.

Margaret Ellis had renewed her driver's license three years earlier.

Someone had deliberately told my mother she was dead.

And Julian had done it.

We searched old records.

We found an address.

A small coastal town.

We drove there with the lawyer's approval and without contacting anyone beforehand.

Margaret opened the door herself.

She was in her seventies.

Gray hair.

Thin glasses.

A walking stick resting against the wall.

When she saw my mother, she froze.

Then she looked at me.

“You're Claire.”

I felt the same cold sensation I had felt when Julian recognized me.

“How do you know my name?”

She stepped back.

“Your father told me.”

We entered.

Her house smelled faintly of cedar and old books.

She sat us down.

“I wondered when someone would come.”

My mother looked at her.

“Did Julian send us?”

Margaret shook her head.

“No.”

“Then who?”

“Your father.”

My mother stared.

“He's been gone for years.”

“I know.”

Margaret looked at me.

“But he left instructions.”

She explained that my father had discovered financial fraud involving several businesses.

Julian was one of the people connected to it.

But he wasn't the only one.

There was another person.

A person who had access to the money.

Margaret refused to say the name immediately.

Instead, she asked whether we had the file.

I placed it on the table.

Her eyes widened.

“You found it.”

“Yes.”

She exhaled slowly.

“Then the missing page is still out there.”

“You know where it is?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

She looked toward the window.

“Your mother has it.”

My mother stared.

“I don't.”

“You do.”

“I don't understand.”

Margaret explained.

Years earlier, my father had given Sarah a document without telling her what it was.

He had told her to keep it somewhere safe.

She had put it with our family records.

Then, after he disappeared, she had moved those records repeatedly.

Margaret believed the document was still in her possession.

My mother shook her head.

“We found the old files.”

“Not all of them.”

Margaret looked at me.

“Your father trusted your memory.”

“What does that mean?”

“He knew you would remember something your mother wouldn't.”

I thought back.

The boxes.

The documents.

The old house.

Then I remembered something I had forgotten completely.

A blue folder.

It had always seemed ordinary.

My father used it for school papers.

I had seen it throughout childhood.

After he disappeared, my mother kept it.

I remembered the folder because it had a strange brass clasp.

We returned home.

My mother searched the attic.

She found the folder inside an old suitcase.

The clasp was still intact.

Inside were school records.

Receipts.

A drawing I had made when I was eight.

And one document folded behind everything else.

It wasn't my father's handwriting.

It was Margaret's.

The document contained a list of payments.

At the bottom was a name.

My mother read it.

Then she dropped the paper.

I picked it up.

The name was my father's former business partner.

But the final payment had been made by Julian.

The lawyer stared at the page.

“This is the missing connection.”

My mother looked at me.

“So Julian wasn't after money from me.”

“Not originally.”

“Then why did he come back?”

We didn't have to guess for long.

My mother's phone rang.

Julian.

She did not answer.

A voicemail appeared.

She played it on speaker.

His voice was calm.

“Sarah, I think we've reached the point where pretending is no longer useful.”

My mother clenched her jaw.

“You have something that belongs to me.”

He paused.

“You may not know what it is. Claire probably doesn't either.”

I looked at my mother.

Then Julian continued.

“Bring it to the old warehouse.”

The message ended.

The lawyer immediately told us not to go.

But something else had become clear.

Julian believed my mother possessed the missing evidence.

And he believed I knew where it was.

That explained the years of manipulation.

The old job.

The renewed relationship.

The surveillance.

The false identity.

He had been trying to locate the missing page.

My mother sat down.

“He dated me to get it.”

I nodded.

“But there's something else.”

“What?”

“He could have threatened me directly.”

“He did.”

“But he didn't take anything.”

“Not yet.”

She looked at me.

“He wanted me to find it for him.”

I thought about the questions he had asked her.

The stories he had told.

The old memories he had encouraged her to discuss.

He had been searching her memory.

Not her house.

Her memory.

Then I remembered his first dinner with us.

The question he had asked me.

“Do you still keep things from your childhood?”

At the time, I had thought it was harmless.

Now I understood.

He had been testing me.

The lawyer looked at the documents.

“We need to protect this evidence.”

My mother nodded.

Then her phone buzzed again.

A message.

No words.

Only a photograph.

It showed Margaret's house.

Taken that morning.

My blood ran cold.

He knew where we had gone.

He knew who we had spoken to.

And beneath the photograph was one sentence.

You found her too late.

I looked at Margaret's name on the document.

Then I noticed something.

A signature at the bottom.

Margaret's signature.

But the date was recent.

Three months ago.

Someone had contacted her long before we did.

Someone had already been looking for her.

I turned the page over.

There was a handwritten note.

Don't trust the woman who says she knows everything.

I looked at my mother.

She was staring at Margaret.

For the first time, neither of us knew whether the person who had helped us was telling the truth.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: The Warning on the Back of Margaret’s Document Forced Us to Question the One Person Who Had Been Helping Us All Along

We spent the entire next morning trying to identify Margaret.
