envelope.

It was left on my mother's porch.

Inside was a photograph of Margaret.

She was sitting in a chair somewhere unfamiliar.

She looked frightened but unharmed.

On the back was an address.

The old warehouse.

The same place my father had once used.

The lawyer told us not to go.

We agreed.

Instead, we contacted the police.

They arranged surveillance.

We prepared a duplicate copy of the evidence.

The original stayed with the lawyer.

If Julian wanted the file, he would receive something that looked convincing but revealed nothing important.

That evening, my mother received another call.

This time, she answered.

Julian said only one thing.

“You have until midnight.”

My mother looked at me.

Then she said, “Why me?”

There was silence.

“Why did you choose directions.

Too many.

We needed the missing page.

Then I remembered Margaret's unfinished letter.

Your husband did not disappear because he stopped loving lamp.

The words became visible.

Because someone he trusted betrayed him.

My mother read them.

“Who?”

We searched every document for a
