My laptop lay open across the coffee table, its screen fractured from one corner to the other. Tiny black pieces had scattered among my nephew’s plastic blocks and the wooden puzzle pieces he liked to chew.

My mother stood over it with both hands still resting on the silver lid.

She was breathing hard.

“Your dreams are trash,” she said.

Across from her, my sister Celeste laughed.

She was sitting on the cream-colored sofa in silk pajamas, one ankle tucked beneath the other leg. In her hand was the baby monitor, which she waved lazily as though she’d just won an argument that had never been fair.

“No job,” Celeste said. “No money. No place here.”

My coat was still half-zipped. My suitcase stood beside the front door.

I had packed it because Mother had ordered me out.

But I hadn’t expected her to destroy my computer before I left.

For three years, that laptop had been the center of my life. Every line of code I’d written, every application I’d prepared, every contract I’d negotiated, and every document connected to my father’s estate had passed through it.

Mother knew that.

Celeste knew it too.

That was why I didn’t believe for one second that she had smashed it simply because she was angry.

She wanted something gone.

I looked at the ruined screen, then at her.

“You’re really doing this?”

Mother’s jaw tightened.

“You’ve been wasting our time for years.”

“My work isn’t wasting time.”

Celeste gave a little snort.

“You call sitting in your room staring at a screen work?”

“I have clients.”

“Two clients,” she corrected. “And one of them hasn’t paid you.”

She lifted the baby monitor toward me.

“You know what real responsibility looks like?”

The nursery door behind her was open.

Inside, my eight-month-old nephew slept in his crib, one fist curled beside his cheek. A soft yellow night-light painted a warm circle on the wall.

I stared at him.

He had nothing to do with this.

Yet somehow, Celeste had made him part of the argument.

Mother followed my eyes.

“You’ve had every advantage,” she said. “Your father left you enough money to build something. Instead, you hid behind that computer and pretended you were going to become somebody.”

I almost laughed.

My father had left me more than money.

He had left me a share of the family investment company, several properties, and a complicated trust that Mother had controlled since his death.

He had also left instructions.

Instructions Mother had spent the past year trying to make me forget existed.

“I know what Dad left me,” I said.

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Celeste saw it too.

She lowered the monitor.

Mother stepped closer.

“No, Nora. You know what you think he left you.”

That sentence stayed with me.

Not because it frightened me.

Because it confirmed something I’d been wondering for months.

There was something they didn’t want me to find.

I looked again at my laptop.

Three years of work were trapped behind the shattered display, but the most important files weren’t.

Mother didn’t know that.

Neither did Celeste.

For six months, I had been preparing for the possibility that this exact night might happen.

I hadn’t expected the broken screen.

But I had expected them to try to force me out.

I’d expected the accusations.

I’d expected the threats.

And I’d expected them to use the estate against me.

My father had taught me something long before he died.

When someone insists you don’t need to keep records, keep records.

When someone tells you not to ask questions, ask twice.

And when someone becomes angry because you’re documenting what they say, save the recording somewhere they can’t reach.

I had listened.

Every file that mattered had been copied automatically to a secure cloud account.

The laptop was damaged.

My evidence wasn’t.

Celeste stood and walked toward me.

“You should probably leave before Mom calls the lawyer.”

I looked at her.

“What lawyer?”

She smiled.

“The one who’s going to make sure you don’t get anything else.”

Mother picked up my suitcase.

She shoved it toward me.

“Go.”

I didn’t move.

“Are you sure?”

Mother stared at me.

“What kind of question is that?”

“The kind you answer before I walk out.”

Her eyes narrowed.

Celeste folded her arms.

“You’re being dramatic.”

“No,” I said. “I’m asking whether you really want me gone.”

Mother’s voice became quiet.

“Yes.”

There was no hesitation.

That was the answer I needed.

I reached for the suitcase.

Celeste lifted the baby monitor again.

“Take a good look around.”

I didn’t.

Instead, I looked directly at her.

“You should be careful what you record.”

For the first time that night, her smile disappeared.

“What?”

I gave a small shrug.

“Nothing.”

I pulled the suitcase toward the door.

Behind me, Mother said, “And don’t contact the estate attorney.”

I stopped.

That was another confirmation.

“Why?”

“Because there is nothing for you to discuss with him.”

“I wasn’t aware you decided that.”

“I am your mother.”

“That doesn’t make you my trustee.”

Silence.

I turned around.

Mother’s face had gone rigid.

Celeste stared at me.

The baby monitor remained in her hand.

“Go upstairs,” Mother said to Celeste.

My sister didn’t move.

“Celeste.”

She finally turned toward the hallway.

But before she left, she looked back at me.

“You’ll regret this.”

“I haven’t done anything.”

“Exactly.”

She disappeared into the nursery.

I stood there for another moment.

Then Mother opened the front door.

Cold rain swept into the foyer.

“Get out.”

I stepped onto the porch.

Behind me, the door slammed.

I dragged my suitcase down the steps.

Only when I reached the iron gate did I let myself breathe.

My phone vibrated.

A message from Celeste.

Don’t come crawling back.

Another arrived almost immediately.

Mother: If you contact the lawyer, I’ll tell him you stole from your father’s estate.

I stopped walking.

The rain soaked my hair.

I stared at the message.

Then I opened another application on my phone.

A secure folder appeared.

LULLABY.

I tapped it.

The first recording loaded.

Mother’s voice filled my headphones.

“Once Nora is out, the shares transfer cleanly.”

I closed my eyes.

Celeste answered.

“And if she refuses?”

Mother’s reply was almost casual.

“Then we use the doctor’s letter.”

I opened my eyes.

The rain suddenly felt colder.

They weren’t improvising.

They had planned this.

And now I knew exactly what they were afraid I would discover.

I ordered a car.

Then I walked through the gate without looking back.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: The Evidence They Thought Was
