She wanted you to inspect the house before anything else was removed.”

I felt a strange chill.

“What did she expect me to find?”

“That is something she wanted you to discover yourself.”

I hated that answer.

But I understood why Grandma had done it.

She knew that if she told me everything, I might dismiss it as impossible.

So she had left evidence.

Not explanations.

Evidence.

I drove to her house that afternoon.

The neighborhood looked exactly as I remembered.

Maple trees lined the street.

A blue mailbox leaned slightly toward the road.

The house itself was smaller than it had seemed when I was a child.

I parked beside the curb.

The porch light was on.

In broad daylight.

I sat in the car for several seconds.

My grandmother's final instruction came back to me.

Keep the porch light on.

I walked toward the front door.

The key was already in my hand.

Inside, the house smelled faintly of cedar and lavender.

Nothing had been disturbed.

Her reading glasses were still beside the chair.

A half-finished crossword puzzle rested on the table.

There was a mug in the kitchen cupboard with a tiny crack along the handle.

I touched it.

I almost expected her to walk in and tell me I was putting it back in the wrong place.

Instead, the silence answered.

I began searching.

Not because I knew what I was looking for.

Because Grandma had left me instructions.

The first clue was in the kitchen.

A photograph of Grandma and Grandpa stood beside the refrigerator.

On the back, written in pencil, was a date.

The date they bought the house.

I turned the photograph over again.

Nothing else.

Then I noticed something strange.

The frame was heavier on one side.

I opened it.

A folded piece of paper fell out.

Three words.

Second drawer.

I went to the kitchen.

The second drawer contained utensils.

Nothing unusual.

I emptied it.

At the back was a false wooden panel.

My hands began shaking.

I lifted it.

Beneath it was another envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

This one showed my mother as a young woman.

She was standing beside my grandmother.

Between them was a man I didn't recognize.

I turned the photograph over.

His name was written on the back.

Daniel Mercer.

I stared at it.

The name meant nothing.

Then I saw the second line.

Property attorney.

My grandmother had circled the words.

I put the photograph on the counter.

There was another note.

Find the blue book.

I searched the living room.

Then the hallway.

Finally, I found it behind a row of old gardening manuals.

A blue ledger.

Its pages were filled with handwriting.

Dates.

Payments.

Names.

Transfers.

I recognized my grandmother's handwriting immediately.

Near the middle of the book, I found my mother's name.

My stomach tightened.

There were several entries.

Amounts.

Dates.

Descriptions.

Some were marked loan.

Others were marked repayment.

But one entry had no amount.

Only four words.

She took the original.

I read it again.

She took the original.

Original what?

I flipped through the pages.

Then I found another name.

Daniel Mercer.

The attorney from the photograph.

Next to his name was a phone number.

Below it, Grandma had written:

If Claire asks, tell her everything.

I sat down.

The house felt suddenly too quiet.

I called the number.

It rang twice.

A man's voice answered.

“Hello?”

“Is this Daniel Mercer?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

“My name is Claire around.

“Yes.”

He exhaled slowly.

“I wondered when she would finally send you.”

My heart began pounding.

“Send me for what?”

He didn't answer immediately.

Then he said something that made me grip the phone tighter.

“Your grandmother wasn't protecting her money from your mother.”

I waited.

“She was protecting you.”

I couldn't breathe.

“From what?”

Daniel Mercer lowered his
