assets.

The second account.

Everything Grandma had been protecting.

“Did you take it?”

My mother looked at me.

“Yes.”

The word was barely audible.

“How much?”

“Enough.”

I stood.

She grabbed my sleeve.

“Sit down.”

I pulled away.

“You stole money meant for me.”

“I used it to keep this family together.”

“No.”

My voice shook.

“You used it to done?”

My mother leaned forward.

“He had another child.”

The café noise seemed to disappear.

I stared at her.

“What?”

“Your grandfather had a son before he married your grandmother.”

I didn't understand.

“What does that have to do with the money?”

“He had promised that child a share of the family property.”

I remembered Thomas.

My mother saw the realization on my face.

“No.”

She shook her head.

“Thomas wasn't your grandfather's son.”

I stared at her.

“Then who is he?”

She swallowed.

“Your father's brother.”

The words didn't fit.

My mother continued.

“Thomas was born to your father's mother before she died.”

I felt the world shift again.

“He was family?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did Grandma search for him?”

“Because your grandfather left him something.”

“What?”

“The original business shares.”

I suddenly understood why my mother had been afraid of the old records.

If Thomas had a legitimate claim, everything changed.

But there was still something missing.

I called Daniel.

He answered immediately.

“Claire?”

“Did my grandfather have another son?”

Silence.

“Yes.”

“Thomas?”

“Yes.”

I looked at my mother.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

Daniel sighed.

“Because your grandmother wanted Thomas protected too.”

“Protected from whom?”

He didn't answer.

I knew.

My mother.

That night, I returned to Grandma's house.

I opened the blue ledger again.

This time I looked at every page.

At the very end, beneath a list of account numbers, I found a handwritten phrase.

The first account is not the important one.

Look behind the portrait.

I went to the hallway.

Grandpa's portrait hung above the old cabinet.

I removed it from the wall.

Behind it was a small compartment.

Inside was a sealed envelope.

My name was written on it.

I opened it.

There was a single bank certificate.

The beneficiary was Claire Bennett.

But beneath my name was another name.

Thomas Bennett.

Joint beneficiaries.

I sat on the floor.

My grandmother had not simply left me the family fortune.

She had restored something my grandfather had intended to protect.

Thomas had a claim.

So did I.

Then I noticed the date.

The certificate had been amended only six months earlier.

The same month Grandma called me.

The same month she called Thomas.

And the same month she changed her will.

I turned the certificate over.

There was a final handwritten note.

Do not trust the account Elaine says is missing.

It is not missing.

I stared at the words.

Then my phone rang.

Mr. Callahan.

“Claire, where are you?”

“Grandma's house.”

“Lock the doors.”

My stomach dropped.

“Why?”

“Because someone just tried to access your grandmother's remaining accounts.”

“Who?”

He paused.

“Your mother.”

<a
