We started with the years when the company expanded.”

I opened the folder.

The first documents were harmless. Insurance renewals. Property forms. Tax-related paperwork. Routine authorizations.

Then I reached the documents from two years earlier.

My handwriting appeared at the bottom of a page.

My signature.

My initials.

I remembered sitting at the kitchen table while Claire moved papers toward me.

She had said, “These are just family tax documents. Sometimes she would bring me a stack after dinner. I signed them because I trusted her.”

Marcus closed his eyes briefly.

“That trust is going to matter emotionally.”

“Does it matter legally?”

“It depends.”

Rebecca leaned forward.

“We found something else.”

She opened her laptop.

“There were digital copies stored in an account connected to Claire.”

A document appeared on the screen.

Its creation date was six months before the first transfer.

The file name was ordinary.

“Why is that important?” I asked.

Rebecca zoomed in.

“Because someone modified the document after you signed it.”

I stared at the screen.

“The signature page wasn't changed.”

“No.”

“The pages above it were.”

My chest tightened.

“So I signed a blank or incomplete form.”

“Not completely blank,” she said. “But the sections describing the authority were added later.”

Marcus's expression hardened.

“That changes things.”

I looked at the folder.

“How much did they move?”

Rebecca answered.

“Preliminary total across the accounts we've identified is just under three-point-six million.”

The number hung in the room.

Three-point-six million dollars.

My company had generated enough revenue to absorb the loss.

But that wasn't the point.

They hadn't simply taken money.

They had designed a system to make the money look authorized.

And they had done it while eating at my table.

I sat down.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Then my phone rang.

Sophie.

I answered immediately.

“Dad?”

“I'm here.”

“Are you coming home?”

“Yes.”

“Are you okay?”

I looked at the documents.

“No.”

She was quiet.

“Do you want me to stay awake?”

That question nearly broke me.

“Yes.”

“Okay.”

I drove home just after midnight.

The house was dark except for the kitchen light.

Sophie was sitting at the table with a blanket around her shoulders.

She looked up.

“Did you find something?”

“Yes.”

“Bad?”

“Very.”

She waited.

I didn't give her every detail.

She was sixteen.

She didn't need to carry the entire weight of an adult legal dispute.

But I told her enough.

“Your stepmother signed some documents using authority I had given her.”

Sophie frowned.

“Did she steal from you?”

“We're investigating.”

“That means yes.”

“Not necessarily.”

She looked at me.

“You always say that when the answer is yes but you don't want to say it.”

I laughed quietly.

“You're getting too good at reading me.”

She pulled the blanket tighter.

“Dad?”

“Yes?”

“Are we going to lose the house?”

“No.”

“The company?”

“No.”

“Then what are you afraid of?”

I thought about that.

“Finding out that I didn't know the people closest to me.”

She looked down.

“Maybe you knew who they were.”

“What do you mean?”

“Maybe you just wanted them to be different.”

I sat across from her.

Sixteen years old.

And somehow she had found the sentence I couldn't find.

The next morning, Marcus filed emergency notices preventing transfers involving the disputed holding companies.

Rebecca continued tracing the accounts.

Ethan froze discretionary payments to several vendors connected to the Collins family.

Nobody was fired.

Not yet.

I wanted the entire record before making a move.

At eleven, Ethan called.

“Daniel, you need to see this.”

I drove to the office.

He had printed an internal email chain.

Martin had been discussing my “retirement” with two senior employees.

The first email was dated four months earlier.

The second was dated three months earlier.

The third was dated three weeks earlier.

The language became increasingly confident.

They weren't discussing whether I might leave.

They were discussing what would happen when I did.

Martin had written that Claire would “handle the family transition.”

I read that sentence twice.

Family transition.

It sounded harmless.

It wasn't.

The next email contained a proposed management chart.

Martin was positioned above operations.

Bryce would oversee field services.

A Collins cousin would control procurement.

Claire would receive authority over the holding companies.

And my position?

Removed.

I looked at Ethan.

“Did they think I was going to leave voluntarily?”

“I don't know.”

“Maybe.”

He didn't answer.

I opened another email.

This one was from Claire to Martin.

Three words stood out.

*Daniel doesn't suspect.**

I closed my eyes.

For eight years, I had thought silence was protecting my marriage.

They had interpreted it as weakness.

That afternoon, I received a message from Claire's attorney requesting a settlement meeting.

Marcus read it before I responded.

“She wants this resolved quickly.”

“What does she want?”

He handed me the proposal.

The number was enormous.

Claire was seeking a substantial percentage of the company's value, several properties, the marital residence, and continuing rights connected to certain company assets.

I stared at the pages.

“She thinks I'll pay this.”

“She thinks you may prefer settlement to exposure.”

“She's right about one thing.”

Marcus looked at me.

“I do prefer settlement.”

He seemed surprised.

“Daniel—”

“I want a fair settlement.”

I looked at the documents.

“Not because I'm afraid.”

“Then why?”

“Because I want the marriage over.”

I paused.

“But I won't surrender what was stolen from the company.”

Marcus nodded.

“That distinction will matter.”

The following evening, I met Claire again.

This time, she arrived with her attorney.

Martin was waiting outside.

I hadn't expected him.

He smiled when I stepped from the truck.

“Still driving that thing?”

I looked at him.

“You're still working for me.”

His smile disappeared.

Inside, Claire sat across from me.

Her attorney opened the meeting.

“We're here to discuss an equitable resolution.”

I said nothing.

Claire watched me.

“You don't have to make this ugly.”

I looked at her.

“You already did.”

Her face hardened.

“You've always believed money makes you right.”

“No.”

I placed a folder on the table.

“I believe documents make things clear.”

Her eyes dropped toward it.

I opened the first page.

Then the second.

Then the third.

Claire's expression changed.

Her attorney leaned forward.

“What are these?”

“Documents my wife had me sign.”

Claire went pale.

“You signed them willingly.”

“Yes.”

“But you knew what they were.”

“No.”

Her attorney looked at her.

I saw it.

The smallest hesitation.

That was enough.

I placed the final document on the table.

“This one created the authority used to move money into the Delaware account.”

Claire stared at it.

Then she looked at me.

“You don't understand.”

“I understand enough.”

She whispered, “Daniel…”

I leaned back.

“You told me you wanted a divorce.”

“I do.”

“Then you'll get one.”

I stood.

“But before this marriage ends, we're going to find out exactly what happened to every dollar.”

Claire didn't answer.

Her attorney gathered the papers.

Outside, Martin was waiting.

He watched me walk toward my truck.

For the first time in eight years, he didn't laugh.

He simply stood there.

And I realized something.

The Collins family had spent years believing my old work truck was proof that I was beneath them.

Now it was the only thing they could see driving away with me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Account They Thought Was Hidden Was Only the First Layer, and One Old Email
