7 – When the Truth About Ownership Finally Reached the Board, the Collins Family Made One Desperate Move I Had Not Expected

The board meeting ended without a vote.

There was too much information and not enough time.

I instructed the directors to preserve every record connected to the Collins family.

No deletions.

No unusual transfers.

No private settlements.

Nothing moved without review.

I wanted the company frozen only where necessary.

The next morning, Martin's attorney contacted Marcus.

They claimed the accusations were “baseless and defamatory.”

Marcus forwarded the letter to me.

I read it over coffee.

Then I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because Martin was still pretending the truth was negotiable.

The letter demanded that I stop contacting employees about the investigation.

It also accused me of creating a hostile work environment.

I handed it back.

“Answer through counsel.”

Marcus nodded.

“I expected that.”

“What do you mean?”

“People who are losing control often try to redefine the problem.”

That afternoon, the first Collins employee resigned.

Then another.

Neither admitted wrongdoing.

Both simply said they wanted to avoid the conflict.

I understood.

Not everyone who had benefited from the arrangement had necessarily known what was happening.

Some had probably accepted generous salaries because they were family.

That was enough.

I didn't want innocent people destroyed simply because they shared a last name.

The investigation continued.

Rebecca discovered that several transfers had been routed through a construction supplier.

The supplier had legitimate business with us.

But someone had inflated invoices.

A project costing $420,000 had been billed at $575,000.

The difference was divided between two accounts.

One belonged to Martin.

The other belonged to the supplier's owner.

I asked Ethan how many projects involved that vendor.

“Thirty-two.”

My stomach dropped.

“How many have been audited?”

“Three.”

“Start the rest.”

He nodded.

We spent the next several days reviewing projects.

The numbers kept appearing.

Small discrepancies.

Then larger ones.

A missing delivery.

An inflated materials invoice.

A duplicated labor charge.

Nothing dramatic by itself.

Together, they formed a pattern.

By the end of the week, Rebecca estimated the total exposure could exceed four million dollars.

I asked her how much had been recovered.

“About seven hundred thousand.”

“How?”

“Some money was still sitting in accounts.”

“Freeze it.”

“Already done.”

The divorce proceedings continued in parallel.

Claire's attorney pushed for mediation.

Marcus advised me to attend.

I did.

Claire sat across from me.

She looked tired.

For the first time since Christmas Eve, she didn't appear completely certain.

Her attorney opened with a proposed settlement.

I listened.

Claire wanted the house.

She wanted several properties.

She wanted a percentage of the company.

She wanted ongoing financial support.

And she wanted confidentiality.

That last request caught my attention.

“Confidentiality about what?”

Her attorney said, “The details of the marriage.”

I looked at Claire.

“Or the financial investigation?”

She didn't answer.

Marcus leaned toward me.

“Don't react.”

I nodded.

I turned to Claire.

“I'll agree to confidentiality regarding our personal life.”

Her attorney waited.

“But not financial misconduct.”

Claire's face tightened.

“We haven't established misconduct.”

“Then you shouldn't be worried.”

The mediator looked between us.

Nobody spoke.

I continued.

“I will divide legitimate marital assets fairly.”

Claire looked at me.

“And the company?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because it isn't yours.”

Her eyes filled with anger.

“You hid it from me.”

“You knew.”

“You never told my family.”

“You asked me not to.”

“You made me look foolish.”

I stared at her.

“You watched your father put my daughter outside in the snow.”

Her face changed.

For a moment, I thought she might cry.

Instead, she looked down.

“I regret that.”

It was the first apology she had offered.

It came too late.

But I believed she meant it.

That didn't erase what followed.

The mediator asked whether there was any possibility of reconciliation.

I answered immediately.

“No.”

Claire closed her eyes.

The meeting ended.

Outside, Marcus said nothing until we reached the parking lot.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“Really?”

“No.”

He nodded.

That was enough.

The following morning, Sophie asked whether I had seen Claire.

“Yes.”

“How was she?”

“Sad.”

“Are you?”

“Yes.”

She looked down.

“Even after everything?”

“Yes.”

I explained that ending a marriage didn't erase eight years of memories.

Some memories were good.

Some were painful.

Some had been false.

All of them had happened.

Sophie understood more than I expected.

Then she asked, “What happens to Grandpa?”

“I don't know.”

“Will he go to jail?”

“I don't know.”

“Do you want him to?”

I thought carefully.

“I want the truth established.”

She nodded.

“That sounds like you.”

A week later, Rebecca found the missing piece.

She called me at 6:15 in the morning.

“Daniel, we found the original account.”

“What account?”

“The first one.”

I sat upright.

“Where?”

“Canada.”

That surprised me.

She explained that the first suspicious transfer hadn't gone directly to Delaware.

It had gone through a Canadian investment account before returning through a U.S. entity.

“Who owned it?”

“We're confirming.”

“Tell me.”

“It appears to be connected to a trust.”

“Martin?”

“No.”

My heart began beating faster.

“Then who?”

“Claire's father-in-law.”

I stared at the wall.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

My father had been dead for nine years.

That didn't make sense.

Rebecca continued.

“The account was established before he died.”

“Then it can't be him.”

“I know.”

She sent the documents.

I opened them.

The trust had been created under my father's name.

But the beneficiary was not him.

It was Claire.

I couldn't speak.

My father had known Claire before our marriage.

He had trusted her.

But he had died long before the company became valuable enough to attract this kind of attention.

Why would his name be connected to the first account?

Marcus arrived an hour later.

We reviewed everything.

Then he noticed something.

“The date.”

“What about it?”

“The trust was created six months before your father died.”

I looked at him.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“Exactly.”

We investigated the signature.

It wasn't my father's.

It was someone else's.

A witness signature.

The witness was a notary.

The notary worked at the same accounting firm Claire and Bryce had visited.

The room went silent.

This was no longer just about my marriage.

Someone had been constructing a financial structure around my family long before the divorce.

I asked Marcus to identify every person involved.

He did.

Then one name stopped me.

The attorney who had drafted the trust.

I knew him.

He had represented Claire's family for years.

But there was something else.

He had also advised my company during its early expansion.

I had trusted him.

I leaned back.

“Call him.”

Marcus looked at me.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

The attorney answered that afternoon.

He sounded nervous.

I asked him one question.

“Why did you create a trust using my father's name?”

Silence.

Then he said, “Daniel, I think you should speak with Claire.”

I ended the call.

Marcus stared at me.

“That tells us something.”

“Yes.”

“What?”

I looked at him.

“Claire wasn't the person who started this.”

He waited.

I continued.

“Someone else taught her how.”

That night, I returned home.

Sophie was doing homework at the kitchen table.

She looked up.

“You found something.”

“Yes.”

“Bad?”

I sat beside her.

“Complicated.”

She closed her notebook.

“Does that mean it's not over?”

“No.”

I looked toward the window.

“It means we're closer.”

Outside, snow began falling again.

The same quiet snow.

The same kind that had covered the Collins porch on Christmas Eve.

Only now, when I looked at it, I didn't see my daughter standing alone in it.

I saw the trail of evidence leading back through years of secrets.

And somewhere at the end of that trail was the person who had first decided I could be used.

<a
