bill.

“It gives me the right to stop you from stealing the other eighty.”

Vanessa's face went pale.

My aunt covered her mouth.

Dad stepped toward me.

“You're making a serious mistake.”

Martin stood.

“That would be a good time to stop.”

Dad glared at him.

“I don't need at me.

“You did this before tonight.”

“I did.”

“So the dinner was a setup.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“Then what was it?”

“You invited me.”

He frowned.

“You were always going to humiliate me tonight.”

“That was your choice.”

“You came here prepared.”

“Yes.”

“For revenge.”

“No.”

I looked around the table.

“I came because I was tired of being afraid of what would happen if I told the truth.”

Nobody spoke.

My father stared at me.

For a moment, I saw the man who had taught me to drive.

The man who had carried me on his shoulders when I was six.

The man who had once sat beside Grandpa and argued over inventory costs while I listened from the hallway.

Then I remembered the first time he told me to sign away my shares.

The memory was colder.

I was twenty-five.

He had closed the office door.

“You don't understand what you're holding.”

“I understand twenty percent.”

“You understand nothing.”

“Then explain it.”

He had leaned across the desk.

“You're family.”

I had stared at him.

“That isn't an explanation.”

“It should be.”

When I refused to sign, he had stopped speaking to me for three weeks.

After that, the rumors began.

I had betrayed him.

I was unstable.

I wanted his job.

I was jealous of Vanessa.

Every accusation had been easier than admitting the truth.

I had discovered numbers he did not want anyone to see.

Back in the restaurant, Dad pointed at Martin.

“How much did she pay you?”

Martin's expression did not change.

“Enough to tell the truth.”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“You really think you're going to take the company?”

“No,” I said.

“I think the shareholders will decide what happens next.”

She folded her arms.

“You don't have enough votes.”

That was true.

At least for the moment.

My father knew it.

That was why his confidence returned.

He straightened his jacket.

“This is over.”

Martin shook his head.

“Not quite.”

He turned toward the door.

“Mr. Keller?”

A man entered.

Vanessa stared.

“Thomas?”

Thomas Keller represented my uncle Stephen.

Dad looked at Stephen.

“What is this?”

Stephen did not answer.

Another person entered behind Keller.

A woman in a navy suit carrying a slim portfolio.

Vanessa recognized her immediately.

“Elena Ruiz.”

The room seemed to shrink.

Dad looked at Stephen.

“What did you do?”

Stephen finally spoke.

“I listened.”

Dad's face hardened.

“You signed something.”

“Yes.”

“What?”

Stephen looked at me.

Then at Dad.

“A voting proxy.”

Vanessa's breathing changed.

“How much?”

“Nine percent.”

Dad turned to Elena.

“And the trust?”

Elena placed her portfolio on the table.

“Twenty-two percent.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.”

I remained seated.

Dad looked at me.

“You don't have enough.”

I answered quietly.

“Twenty plus nine plus twenty-two.”

He stopped.

Vanessa stared at the three of us.

“Fifty-one.”

Nobody corrected her.

Dad sat down slowly.

For the first time that evening, he looked older.

Not weak.

Not defeated.

Just suddenly aware that the rules he had controlled for years were no longer his to write.

“You planned this,” he whispered.

“I prepared for it.”

“Since when?”

“Since Grandpa died.”

His face tightened at the mention of my grandfather.

“You're using his death against me.”

“No.”

I looked at the transfer document.

“You used his death against all of us.”

That landed differently.

Even Vanessa stopped arguing.

I pushed the document back toward Martin.

“There is still one thing I need to know.”

Martin looked at me.

“What?”

I pointed to the transfer.

“The signature.”

Dad's eyes narrowed.

Martin nodded.

“We have an expert nothing.

Vanessa whispered, “Dad.”

He finally looked at her.

She stared back.

“Tell me that's not true.”

He didn't
