twenty-five years ago.”

“What exactly did he say?”

Stephen rubbed his hands together.

“He said there were people outside the family who wanted control of else?”

“He told me that if I ever saw certain names in the company accounts, I should bring them directly to him.”

“Did wasn't.”

I thought about Grandpa's letter.

Protect what I built.

Perhaps he had known.

Perhaps he had been trying to protect the company from more than my father.

That evening, Martin called.

“We found the deposit box.”

My pulse jumped.

“Where?”

“First Federal Trust.”

“When can we access it?”

“Tomorrow.”

The bank was in the oldest part of the city.

The deposit box required multiple forms of identification and a court authorization.

When it finally opened, there was almost nothing inside.

One ledger.

One envelope.

One key.

I recognized the handwriting on the envelope.

Grandpa.

This time, the message was shorter.

Claire,

If you have reached this point, do not trust the person who tells you the truth was a photocopy of a board resolution dated twenty-three years earlier.

It authorized the creation of a private trust.

The trustee was not my father.

It was my grandfather.

The beneficiaries were listed as his grandchildren.

Me.

Vanessa.

And, unexpectedly, another name.

I stared.

“Who is Daniel impossible.”

“Why?”

“Because your grandfather only had two children.”

“My father and Stephen.”

“Yes.”

“So who is Daniel?”

Martin looked at the date.

“Born before Richard?”

“Apparently.”

I turned the page.

There was no explanation.

Only a percentage.

Five percent.

A separate beneficial interest in the family trust.

I felt a strange pressure in my chest.

“Could there have been another child?”

Stephen shook his head.

“Not that I know of.”

I looked at Martin.

“Find him.”

We spent the next two days searching public records.

Daniel Harrington was difficult to trace.

The name appeared in old documents.

Then vanished.

Eventually, Martin found a birth record.

Daniel's mother was not my grandmother.

She was another woman.

A woman named Eleanor Grant.

I stared at the name.

Grant.

Marcus Grant.

The missing consultant.

Martin saw it too.

“No.”

“What?”

“This could be coincidence.”

“Could be.”

But neither of us believed that.

We found Eleanor's address.

She had died eleven years earlier.

Her son Daniel was alive.

He lived three hours away.

We drove there the next morning.

Daniel was sixty-one.

He opened the door only after seeing Martin.

“You finally came.”

Martin stopped.

“You know me?”

Daniel smiled without humor.

“Your name has been in my life for thirty years.”

I looked at him.

“Who are you?”

He looked at me.

“Your uncle.”

The word sounded unreal.

I could not speak.

He stepped aside.

“Come in.”

His house was modest.

No photographs of the Harrington family.

No company memorabilia.

Nothing that suggested wealth.

He sat across from us.

“My mother never wanted anything from your grandfather,” he said.

“Then why did Grandpa create the trust?”

“Because he wanted to provide for me without acknowledging me publicly.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked at Martin.

“Because Richard threatened him.”

I felt the room tighten.

“My father?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Richard discovered my grandfather had another son.”

I stared at him.

“Why would that matter?”

“Because of the company.”

Daniel explained.

My grandfather had promised Eleanor that Daniel would receive five percent of the business when he turned thirty.

Richard opposed it.

He believed the company belonged to the direct family line.

So the trust was created privately.

Richard eventually discovered it.

And according to Daniel, he began pressuring Grandpa.

“What happened then?” I asked.

“Grandpa changed the trust.”

“To remove you?”

Daniel shook his head.

“To protect me.”

“How?”

“He moved my five percent into a protected structure.”

I remembered the resolution.

Five percent.

Daniel continued.

“Richard thought he had eliminated my interest.”

“Did he?”

“No.”

Daniel smiled faintly.

“He never understood the document.”

I looked at Martin.

“What document?”

Daniel stood.

He returned with a metal case.

Inside was another copy of the trust.

But this version contained a clause I had never seen.

If any controlling shareholder engages in fraud, concealment, or unlawful diversion of company assets, voting rights associated with that shareholder's interest may be suspended upon independent determination.

I read it slowly.

Dad's position had been even more fragile than we realized.

Daniel watched me.

“Your grandfather expected something like this.”

“Did he expect Dad to steal?”

“No.”

“Then what did he expect?”

Daniel looked toward the window.

“He expected the family to fight over the company.”

That answer stayed with me.

Then he said something else.

“There is one more thing you should know.”

“What?”

“Your father wasn't the person who first started the hidden accounts.”

I waited.

“Your grandfather was.”

I stared at him.

Daniel continued.

“He used them to protect the company from someone outside the family.”

“Who?”

Daniel shook his head.

“That is what the second ledger explains.”

He placed it on the table.

I opened it.

The first page contained a name.

Marcus Grant.

The second contained a photograph.

The third contained a sentence underlined twice.

If Richard ever finds this ledger, he will believe I betrayed him.

I turned the page.

And there it was.

The name of the person Grandpa had been protecting the company from.

A rival businessman.

One whose company still did business with Harrington Supply Group.

One whose name I recognized immediately.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: The
