8 – The Rival Was Still Doing Business With Us, and the Ledger Suggested My Father Had Been Both His Enemy and His Secret Partner

The name belonged to Victor Lang.

I knew him.

Everyone in our industry did.

Lang Industrial had been Harrington Supply Group's largest competitor for nearly two decades.

Victor had publicly criticized my grandfather's business practices.

He had tried to acquire Harrington Supply more than once.

And my father had always spoken about him with contempt.

“Why would Grandpa hide money from Victor?” I asked.

Daniel shook his head.

“He didn't hide it from Victor.”

He looked at Martin.

“He hid it from the people Victor had working inside the company.”

Martin leaned forward.

“Who?”

Daniel tapped the ledger.

“Read the next pages.”

I did.

The entries were difficult to follow at first.

They described payments made to protect employees.

Witnesses.

Information.

Legal fees.

There were references to threats against warehouse managers.

Someone had tried to force my grandfather into selling the company.

He had resisted.

Then I reached a series of entries dated twenty-three years earlier.

The payments changed.

They were no longer defensive.

They were transactional.

My grandfather had begun paying Victor Lang's intermediaries.

I looked at Daniel.

“Why?”

“He needed information.”

“About what?”

“Who was trying to take the company.”

“Victor?”

Daniel shook his head.

“Not Victor.”

I turned another page.

There was a name.

Thomas Keller.

I froze.

The same Thomas Keller who had represented Stephen at the shareholder meeting.

The same man who had appeared at the birthday dinner.

The same man who had helped us obtain the proxy documents.

I looked at Martin.

“No.”

Martin took the ledger.

He read the page.

His expression became unreadable.

“What does it say?”

He handed it back.

“Your grandfather believed Keller was secretly negotiating with Victor.”

I stared at the words.

“That was twenty-three years ago.”

“Yes.”

“Maybe he left the company.”

“Maybe.”

“But he still represents Stephen.”

“Yes.”

I felt the first real uncertainty since the shareholder vote.

What if Grandpa's warnings were not about the past?

What if someone had carried the old network forward?

The next pages made that possibility harder to dismiss.

Keller's name appeared again.

Then again.

Not as an employee.

As an intermediary.

He had allegedly moved money between companies.

The amounts were smaller than the later transfers.

But the pattern was unmistakable.

I called Stephen.

He answered immediately.

“What happened?”

“Where did you find Keller?”

“At my law firm.”

“No. Before that.”

Stephen was silent.

“Why?”

“Did Grandpa ever warn you about him?”

Another silence.

“Yes.”

My stomach dropped.

“Why did you hire him?”

“I didn't know he was involved.”

“Did you ask?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

Stephen sounded defensive.

“Claire, this is getting out of control.”

“No. It is finally coming into focus.”

I told him about the ledger.

He agreed to meet us.

When he arrived, he looked shaken.

I showed him the pages.

He read them.

Then sat down.

“I remember Grandpa mentioning Victor.”

“What did he say?”

“That Victor wasn't the real threat.”

“Who was?”

Stephen looked at me.

“Keller.”

Martin said nothing.

Stephen continued.

“Your grandfather believed Keller had influence inside several companies.”

“Did Dad know?”

“I don't know.”

“But Keller worked with Dad.”

“Yes.”

“Did Grandpa ever say why?”

Stephen shook his head.

“He said Richard was useful.”

I frowned.

“Useful?”

“He could get information.”

The room went quiet.

That was the first explanation that made sense.

My father and Keller may have been working together.

But not necessarily from the beginning.

Perhaps they had inherited a system Grandpa created to protect the company.

Perhaps Dad had discovered how profitable it could become.

Then the protective accounts had turned into personal accounts.

A defense mechanism had become a machine for theft.

That theory fit the evidence.

It also explained why the scheme had survived for so long.

Martin interrupted my thoughts.

“We need to find Keller.”

“He's representing Stephen.”

“Not anymore.”

Stephen looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because if this ledger is authentic, he has a conflict of interest.”

Stephen nodded slowly.

“We should contact another firm.”

“Immediately,” I said.

That afternoon, Keller called me.

“I hear you've been asking questions.”

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“Where did you hear that?”

“People talk.”

“What do you want?”

“I want to help.”

“I don't need your help.”

“You may.”

I looked at Martin.

He was listening.

Keller continued.

“There are things about your grandfather you don't understand.”

“Then explain them.”

“Not over the phone.”

“Why?”

“Because some conversations should happen in person.”

I refused.

He sighed.

“You're making the same mistake your father made.”

“What mistake?”

“Assuming the person who appears guilty is the person who controls the money.”

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What are you saying?”

“I'm saying Richard wasn't the architect.”

I looked at Martin.

“Who was?”

Keller hung up.

We traced the call.

The number was registered to his office.

That was strange.

He had called from his own phone.

There was no reason to hide it.

Unless he wanted us to know exactly where he was.

That night, someone attempted to access the company's accounting server.

Our security team stopped the login.

The credentials belonged to an old executive account.

Richard's.

Martin called me.

“Do not go home.”

“Why?”

“Because whoever tried that login may have known you were the one who changed the passwords.”

I stayed at a hotel.

The next morning, I received an envelope.

No return address.

Inside was a single photograph.

My father.

Keller.

Victor Lang.

And Marcus Grant.

The photograph had been taken twenty-three years earlier.

On the back were four words.

You still don't know who betrayed whom.

I stared at it.

Martin stood beside me.

“That's a warning.”

“No.”

I turned the photograph over.

“It's an invitation.”

“To what?”

I looked at the date.

The photograph had been taken on the exact day the original trust was created.

And suddenly, I understood why Grandpa had left the second ledger.

He hadn't wanted me to discover who stole the money.

He wanted me to discover why the money existed in the first place.

I opened the ledger again.

Near the back was a page we had missed.

A final entry.

One sentence.

If Claire ever takes control, she must know that Richard's greatest secret is not what he stole.

It is what he was trying to keep hidden.

I read it twice.

Then a third time.

My father had spent years convincing everyone that he was protecting the company.

I had assumed he was lying.

But the ledger suggested something more complicated.

He had been protecting something.

And if that was true, then the missing money, the forged transfer, Marcus's disappearance, Keller's involvement, and the hidden trust were all pieces of the same story.

Martin looked at me.

“What are you going to do?”

I closed the ledger.

“Find out what Dad was protecting.”

“And if you don't like the answer?”

I looked toward the window.

“I've already learned something.”

“What?”

“Truth doesn't become less important because it's inconvenient.”

My phone rang.

It was my father.

I almost ignored it.

Then I answered.

His voice was quiet.

“You found the second ledger.”

I said nothing.

He continued.

“Then you know about Daniel.”

“Yes.”

A long silence.

“And Keller?”

“Yes.”

Another silence.

Then Dad said something I never expected.

“Claire, if you want to understand what happened to this family, stop looking at what I stole.”

I waited.

“Look at what I was trying to protect.”

The line went dead.

I lowered the phone.

Martin stared at me.

“What did he say?”

I looked down at the ledger.

“He said the same thing Grandpa did.”

Then I noticed something I had missed before.

A tiny notation in the corner of the final page.

A date.

Tomorrow.

And beneath it, an address.

My father's old warehouse.

The same warehouse where we had found the first ledger.

Someone had arranged for us to return.

And this time, they expected us to find something.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: The Warehouse Held One Final Secret, and My
