The difference was that someone had been there recently.

A chair stood beside the metal cabinet.

A cup of coffee sat on the floor.

It was still warm.

Martin stopped.

“Don't touch anything.”

I looked toward the back of the warehouse.

“Someone was waiting for us.”

“Or they left minutes ago.”

We moved slowly through the aisles.

Nothing had been disturbed near the first cabinet.

Then we saw a light beneath the office door.

The old office had been empty when we searched the building.

Now someone had turned on the desk lamp.

Martin drew his phone from his pocket.

I reached for the handle.

He caught my wrist.

“Wait.”

We listened.

Nothing.

He opened the door.

The room was empty.

A single envelope sat in the center of the desk.

My name was written across it.

I recognized the handwriting.

My father's.

I opened it.

Claire,

If you found this, you are already farther than I ever expected you to get.

I read the next paragraph twice.

I did not create the first hidden accounts. Grandpa did. He created them because Harrington Supply was being targeted from inside and outside the family. He believed secrecy was the only way to protect the company.

Martin leaned closer.

I kept reading.

The problem began when I discovered how much money moved through those accounts. I told myself I was protecting the company by controlling them. At first, I was. Then I began using the system for myself.

My hands tightened around the paper.

There was no excuse in the letter.

That surprised me.

My father did not ask for forgiveness.

He did not claim innocence.

He simply described what happened.

He wrote that Victor Lang had been investigating Harrington Supply for years, but Victor himself had not been the mastermind. The real threat had been a group of investors who wanted to force my grandfather into selling the company.

Marcus Grant had discovered them.

Keller had discovered them too.

But Keller had made a different choice.

He had begun working for both sides.

He passed information to my grandfather while secretly taking payments from the investors.

Then Marcus found out.

That was why Marcus disappeared.

I stopped reading.

“Martin.”

He took the letter.

His face hardened.

“Keep going.”

I did.

My father admitted that he had known Marcus was in danger.

He claimed he tried to protect him.

But he had been too late.

Marcus disappeared.

My father then took control of the accounts Grandpa had created.

Instead of closing them, he expanded them.

Money moved through shell companies.

Consulting contracts were created.

Payments were disguised.

The system became something entirely different.

Then came the sentence that made my stomach drop.

Vanessa did not know about the original network.

She knew about the money later.

I looked at Martin.

“So she knew.”

“Yes.”

“But not everything.”

“That's what he says.”

I continued.

My father wrote that he had eventually discovered another problem.

Keller was still active.

He had maintained contact with the same network that had targeted Grandpa.

And when Dad began stealing from the company, Keller started using that knowledge against him.

The blackmail had begun slowly.

A payment here.

A favor there.

Then larger demands.

My father had become trapped inside the system he had once believed he controlled.

At the bottom of the page, he had written one final paragraph.

I forged Grandpa's signature because I believed I needed to secure control before Keller took everything. I was wrong. I became the thing Grandpa feared.

I lowered the letter.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then Martin said, “There is more.”

He pointed to the back.

I turned the page.

There was an address.

Not the warehouse.

A private storage facility across town.

And beneath it:

The second key.

I looked at Martin.

“We found one key.”

“That means there are two.”

“Why would Dad tell us this?”

Martin shook his head.

“Maybe because he knows he is losing.”

“Or because he wants something.”

“That too.”

We left the warehouse and drove to the storage facility.

The unit was registered under a company name I did not recognize.

But the incorporation documents traced back to Harrington Supply.

The second key opened a small compartment inside the unit.

There were boxes.

Not money.

Not weapons.

Records.

Hundreds of pages.

Photographs.

Bank statements.

And a digital recorder.

Martin found the recorder first.

A label had been attached.

M.G.

Marcus Grant.

My hands went cold.

We listened.

Marcus's voice was older than I expected.

Tired.

Careful.

He described the original scheme.

He named the investors.

He named Keller.

And then he said something that changed the meaning of everything.

“Richard knows more than he admits, but he is not the person who ordered my disappearance.”

I looked at Martin.

The recording continued.

“If something happens to me, don't trust Keller.
